Defending Tips

Any defending tips?

The AI is good in running and planning even with 'regular' difficulty.
When I use my way, the fouls conceded are too much.

use O to call another player to press the man with the ball while you drop back and close open gaps.

luck

And if you are 1-on-1 defending, don't hold down pressure constantly - alternate pushing it and not. It'll help you stay close without opening yourself up to get beat.

And, as lame as it sounds, the surest way to stop the CPU's quick counters (I know teams are all running their very own strategies, like long ball, etc., but they are ALL capable of countering very quickly) is to foul at midfield whenever possible. Hey, if the AI wants to bullsh*t me, I've got some bullsh*t too.

if you are 1 0n 1 defending, press square and r2 as the computer positions your player to hold up the play so they end up getting tackled

O? As in Circle on the ps3? Thats slide tackle, square is to call another player but I wouldn't recommend that in most situations as it screws your centre back postitioning

R2 is the most important defensive command this year, when you are in control of a centre back get close and press r2 and the AI shouldn't be able to super-dribble past you.

It just depends who your players are. Quite realistically players like Nani will make you defensively fragile whilst players like Vidic don't require the press of conservative tackle sometimes, they're that strong you can simply bulldoze into the attacker.

^ Yeah think he was referring to xbox controls. On ps3 it's x. Mostly it's about holding down r2 and pressing x at the same time in order to screen or cover the ball. Then as mentioned, you let go of r2 to execute tackle. You have to work a bit on this, but when you master it it will be great. Otherwise you can use square to call an other defender (i find it quite useful in some situations while i just hold r2 and backwards on the directional buttons letting the supporting defender take the ball) You cal also just hold square for a little while, so that supporting defender tuns towards the player in control of the ball, and then let go of it so he just stresses the cpu and forces them to play the ball backwards and you get reorganized. There were some defending tutirials posted in here somewhere.
Will try to find them and post them. Very useful.

^ Found the tutorials.

Please check these videos out. They helped me a lot - having spend hours trying to figure out how to defend properly. Then this guy calmly masters defending during a match on top player while explaining step by step what to do. Amazing.

All credit goes to the guy who made the videos, and as for the links credit goes to christoph2011 a user on this site. Thanks mate. Not trying to steal your thunder by pasting these links :)

- When performing a standing tackle with A, make sure to slow your momentum down and aim for ball as precisely as possible, spamming A will see the ball carrier dance past you like you aren't their.

- use super cancel to position defenders, also effective(at times) to use super cancel to position yourself for a tackle

- A tap of RT when timed correctly can see your player attempt to win the ball back in different contextual ways, works in a similar way to standing tackle.

- Playing a higher line can be more effective than last year, especially if you are good at using offside trap.

can anyone give me feedback if R2 AND SQUARE work as it alway works for me and i haven't conceded a goal for 10 consecutive matches. It isn't hard as the com controls how you jockey instead of using x which is broken

It works for everyone, which is why PES-hold-your-hand-all-the-way-2012 is a weak effort.

This is my major issue with defending in this game:

You don't have to think, or anticipate anything. Just hold the buttons down until the AI does everything.

I for the life of me, can't understand why people are enjoying this system.

yes which is why some people use r2 and x but people think even that is difficult which is why konami made it easier by letting COM postion you. I think to hold up play it should be r2 and the left stick but i think there should be an option for r2 and circle as defending shouldn't be as hard as it is on manuel

^ R2 and square - isn't that just the player you control is covering/holding up space, while square is calling an other defender?

r2 and square is holding up play with your own player but computer controlled. You may think this sounds dangerous but the cpu actually puts you in to good positions and if in a right position to tackle, they will tackle. Holding up play also annoys the heck out of the cpu which why they are ofrced to pass back or lose possesion. You can also press r2 and square and x to hold-up and get another teammate to pressure and tackle him.
Try this out on training - it may sound confusing but it's simple and sure there is a little freedom but what can we do about it?

If your playing on superstar don't use the pressure button a lot.If you high pressure on superstar you opponents become more superhuman.

i always put pressing to 4 or 5 and compactness 5 because i love to defend tactically instead of straight away going in for the tackle because they''l just use a speed burst or sidestep to dodge it even with players like heskey
