so, after hearing about all the great reviews for pes 2013, i decided to dish out 50 dollars for it, hoping for the best.
me and my mate played it for a few hours against the computer and i can honestly say that i am officially done with the pes franchise.
first off, pes 2013 is no doubt better than 2012. i'll give it that much. and there were moments that were fun. but all in all, its no where even close to the quality of fifa 2013 at the moment.
now, i was the biggest pes fanboi up until last year. me and my mates played the ps2 version for years and years and years. i remember breaking night so many times playing master league because i just had to get in that one last game. i consider that one of the best gaming experiences of my life, having adrenaline pumping through your veins cause you just scored that 90th min goal at 4 in the morning and wanting to scream but can't cause you would wake up the entire house. priceless...
i finally switched over to the next gen console and purchased pes 2012 last year. we played it for about 6 months, wanting to love it, trying to love it, but couldn't. playing it felt like being repeatedly punched in the face by a clown. i felt insulted to play it. the game was just so sloppily put together. 95% of free kicks going in if you don't jump the wall, regardless of who's kicking it. the 500 mph intricate passing and .00000001 second reaction time of all the computers, regardless of the team. the game just feels so sloppy, unpolished, and unfinished.
and the main problem with pes is this, when you play it, you feel like your playing a game, not a football game, just a game. it feels like a made up sport that you have to adjust your concepts of what football is in order to play. i feel like im playing against the programming, trying to figure out the best way to overcome and defeat this 'game'. but i don't feel any essence of 'football'.
we started playing fifa 12 in the beginning of the summer, and while the learning curve was pretty steep and we got our asses kicked for hundreds of hours, we finally got decent and regularly get together and play for 8 hours at a time.
after playing 2013 today, all i felt was that it was a better version of 2012. the 500 mph passing was reduced to 250 mph. attacking is slightly easier and its been tweaked here and there but overall its the same damn game as 2012, just better. and then i realized pes can't change. it can only ever be another version of THAT game. the entire foundation and core programming of the game is off. its not something a tweak will fix, ever.
im not saying fifa is perfect, and it will never reach the level of pes for ps2, but at least it feels like im playing a 'football' game. it feels finished, polished, and i dont have to compromise myself, saying things like, 'ok, that makes absolutely no sense, but ill accept that and adjust in order to keep playing', which i end up saying every 5 minutes when playing pes.
sorry, its time to move on. goodbye pes...
