I see alot of you are having this problem that it freezes on this screen, ive posted in the threads how to fix it but i thought i would start a new thread instead.
This is all down to your router firewall blocking incoming traffic on a certain port. "Yes but other games such as hardware areana work fine" i hear you cry, but for some reason i dont know of, this game gets blocked by the firewall. I had the same problem yesterday, then read somewhere that i should configure my router to allow incoming traffic on the specified port for the ps2. If you look at port settings in the network settings on PES5 (i think on the same screen as "network configuration" when your in the process of getting pes5 online, then you will have 2 choices, either automatic or specify port number. which was default 3658 UDP port i think. So i selected that, then changed the settings on my router to allow all incoming traffic. restarted my ps2 after saving, and it worked.
This effectively knocks down your firewall tho, so its probably not the best way. You should be able to just allow port 3658 or whichever you choose if your worried about not having a firewall, but im yet to try that, but what the hell it works Windows XP has its own firewall anyway so i dont see why you need one on the router too.
Bearing in mind tho i have a router/modem/switch all in one, so any other kind or router or modem might be a different ball game
