OP mentioned it, but no one else has, so I will: use the speed burst (R1 + R2, plus left analog controls, depending on whether you're stationary or moving) liberally, ESPECIALLY with your wingers. Also, player momentum seems to factor in more heavily than in years past, so try everything you can to get your opponent moving in the wrong direction.
And, of course, first touch is everything.
i find speed burst useful when starting counter attacks as it obviously speed the play. However it won't help much in tight situations where there are a few players marking ya. if you're crap at skills, you just have to try weaving yourself through the players using the left stick (r2 if you want). however this is easier with players of high agility
