I haven't played PES since the golden days of 5-6, 2008. And I just started playing the new one. I have to say I think it's pretty good and it has improved in many areas; easier to coordinate your defense, better passing, and I like the accuracy of the dribbling. I mean, it's still not easy to blaze past defenders, but the touch dribbling makes it easier to keep the ball while looking for the pass.
But there is one issue with it. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to shoot on target! I want to start a Master League and am just practicing on exhibition matches, and I'm comfortable with most aspects of the game except this. I can dominate possession, make lots of chances and yet CANNOT get the ball in the back of the net! I use the D-pad to control players, direct passes and shots, etc and it's all fine doing that (the 360 functions are interesting and I'm learning how to get them into my gameplay). But it just seems like you CANNOT direct the ball where you want it into the net using D-pad.
Back on the old PES I remember you could just direct it with D-pad like you would anything else. If you want to shoot directly forward, hold forward, if you want to place it the right, angle it that way. But it seems like if you angle it at all it just blazes off way wide, and everything else just goes straight at the keeper. I've even gone into free training just running at the keeper over and over with my striker trying to nestle it into the corner and it seems like the control is incapable of finding the right angle, it is as though it is simply not sensitive enough to detect the right angles to hit the net. It either goes at the keeper or wide.
This is truly bizarre. On the old games I didn't really think so much about shooting. You angled it with the control and shot. It was instinctive, you could just feel out the shot. Now it seems like there is no shooting system. And on that note, it seems impossible to score headers. I've played tons of exhibition matches and neither the CPU nor I have scored a single header - and I think there have only been maybe 2 headers on target out of all the matches, all by the CPU. Absolutely bizarre.
So, how on earth do you shoot? This seems like a solid game but the offensive aspect seems to be lacking quite badly, unless I'm doing something wrong.

I had this problem too, now I can shoot the game is alot better for me.
