How the game "cheats"

Hi people!

I've just played the game for around 10 hrs straight, I'm exhausted and a bit depressed.. :p

I'm currently in my third season in ML, playing as Derby, just got through to knock-out stages in Champions League.

Anyway, a couple of hours ago I decided to try out different settings for pass assist and stuff, I've played on Top Player up til now, with -1 speed and just 1 bar in pass assist. I hadn't had that many good passers up 'til that point, but I had some now and decided to try with 0 pass assist against Basel in the champions league. I was in the same group as Bayern Munchen and Lyon also, and I had played 1-1 draw in both those matches (first leg), so I was feeling confident at Basel who had a MUCH lesser team in stats. (I hadn't had so many matches I felt was scripted up to this point, maybe one in 6-7 I let in stupid goals I couldn't do anything with..)

What struck me first, as it has before, is that now long passes and long through balls were much easier to control, but short passing was a pain now. My players kept letting the ball past them, even if it was like 30 cm from their foot and they kept loosing balance and had to run after the ball. Also, when defending, I had suddenly no chance to intercept crosses. (I suspect the game helps you out with this when you have pass assist on for some reason, but I'll get back to that.)

So I decided to try setting pass assist on 2 bars instead of one. At this point I was under 1-0 because of a "homing-missile cross" and I was about to start the second half. Now that was a real noticeable difference, I surged forward and felt like my passes were hitting every time! Right from kick-off, 3-5 passes and a through ball I wouldn't have made unless I tried ten times in a row, goal. Basel kicked off again, I snapped up the ball and had maybe 2 passes and a high throug ball, same outcome, 1 on 1 with the keeper and goal again!

Now two things crossed my mind:

1. That was maybe too easy. :p Now I understand why people complain about pass assist online. Also, I couldn't "feel" the pass like I can on 1 or 0 pass assist bars.

2. Why haven't I played with this setting before..? :p It's much easier!

But I soon found out. :p The CPU cleary compensated for my newfound passing abilities by not missing any passes AT ALL! Sure, I could get in a lucky tackle like I did at 1-1, but that was it.. So they had three counter-attacks and in no time I was under 4-2. And I could do NOTHING about it.. (I consider myself an above average/relatively good PES player by the way, been playing for years.. :p)

Of course, I got p**sed off and restarted the match in my original settings.. :p At least then I didn't feel like I let in so many moronic goals, even though it's very much harder to break through the defence because my passes seldom go quite the way I want them to.

So, in conclusion, this is how I felt the CPU "cheats" to compensate for settings:

- Top Player + 1 pass assist = Easier to intercept crosses/passes, not so many stupid goals conceded because defending is easier, harder to break through the defence because of passes not accurate enough/over- or underhit.

- Top Player + 0 pass assist = Better long balls/long through balls, but the passes often hits behind the player, or the players miss the ball and looses balance. Also, crosses and passes are suddenly harder to intercept again.. (Homing missile-syndrome :p)

- Top Player + 2 pass assist = Way easier to play through balls, but noo "feeling" in the passes anymore. CPU overcompensates by hitting 99% of passes/crosses and it suddenly feels extremely scripted. :p

- SuperStar + any of the assists = Feels much "easier" to intercept passes. However, the CPU defence intrecepts 99% of through balls + dribblers are almost impossible to stop.

I wish I hadn't tried the different assists in retrospect, because I was having fun up 'til the Basel match.. :p Now I feel like I have to choose wich of the "cheats" or unfair CPU advantages I can live with before I continue playing, and I kind of lost the will to continue.. :-(

Hopefully it will be more fun when me and my mate play ML together, or agianst each other. PES is always best when playing with mates.. :) Only problem is, most people I know have converted to FIFA, and I really loathe that game.. :p I'd rather play no footie game at all tbh.. :p I really, really hope the next instalment won't be so scripted, because without that this game would be perfect to me.. (Well, that and the tiresome ML training..)

I'll stop ranting now.. (Or whatever it is I'm doing..)

Very interesting! I'm going to try this too,i'm curieus whats gonna happen:). If i understand you good it is better to set it to '0' pass assist but then you have problems with YOUR short passes? Maybe you can try to hold R2 when you pass? I use it very much because then i got the feeling my passes are much better! Or maybe when we got lucky the new konami update of tomorrow will change some things in positive way.. i hope.. but dont get me wrong.. I love this game but some things MUST be fixed...

Need to be fixed:
-CPU SUPERSKILLS
-Our shooting
-sometimes passing like you say
-CPU makes a lot of silly goals,ok it's football but too much is too much;) Or if we get the same advantage i can live with it;)

If they can fix that,it will we the best PES since PES6 (for me:),everyone has his favourit)

Grtz
