How to improve the single player experience

I'm starting to get bored of Pes 2010 already mainly because it's just not challenging anymore. This week I've been playing WE7 (Pes 3) on the PS2 and notice how much more realistic and challenging it is compared to this year's game. The CPU knows how to attack and how to defend. They actually score goals on you, which they have no clue on the PS3 games. The refs are perfect. The gameplay is pretty much what you would expect from a great football simulation. How did it actually go downhill from there? I think Konami should take a look back at WE7 and use it as inspiration when creating Pes 2011. Here are some things which I think would really improve single player gaming in Pes 2011.

1. The cpu should attack more. They just completely forgot how to score goals in the PS3 games. All they do is pass pass pass and when they finally attack they do really stupid things then end up taking a weak shot that results in an easy save. They also always shoot from stupid angles that usually miss when they should be crossing or squaring the ball or even trying to dribble for a better angle.

2. Why is Barcelona the easiest team to beat? Chelsea is also pretty easy. I always beat them 3-0 or 5-0 but have a harder time against the weaker teams. They are 2 of the hardest teams to beat in real life. A lot of times Barcelona will not play their star players and use Puyol at LB?? I checked before the match and Messi and Ibrahimovich are not injured but instead they choose to use Jonathan, Pedro, and Bojan which means easy game for me. Even when they do have all their star players they still don't put up much of a fight. Also why do they always take off star players (Messi) when they need a goal? That is really stupid. In real life if they need a goal Messi stays on unless injured. Also why did Messi only grab 8 goals in the season despite never being injured? He is the 2nd best player in the game and La Liga goalscoring leader in real life. The cpu should score a lot more with him. Fix these issues and maybe get rid of the bonehead that thought Barcelona is the easiest team to beat.

I only lose once or twice a season and that's mainly because the big teams always gets destroyed by me when they should put up a much better fight. In WE7 I chose Real Madrid vs Barcelona on 4 stars and I lost 3-0 mainly due to typical poor Madrid defending but Barca counter attacked well and they defended well. When attacking they usually chose the right options. I then played against Valencia and we drew 1-1. What happened to those days when the cpu was actually challenging? When pace was not so powerful and it actually took some skill to beat defenders?

3. More injuries. What is the point of putting injuries in the game when my players never get injured? Even the C rated players don't get injured, even when taking multiple tackles from behind. Once in a while a B rated player will get injured but only for 1 or 2 weeks. The A rated players never ever get injured even when taking vicious tackles from behind that would break anyone's legs. When I was playing WE7 yesterday, in my 2nd game of the night Zidane got injured 5min into the match and he has an A rating. Shocking! I also remember back then I was losing players to long term injuries, as long as 48 weeks! Not just that but there were injury details too like broken leg, hamstring, etc. How is the injury system worse now compared to back then? I just don't understand at all. Sometimes having an injury crisis like what Man United is going through right now, being forced to use your fringe players would make the season a lot more challenging. If the gamers don't like it they can always turn the injury setting off so what are you afraid of Konami?

4. More penalties, fouls, and bookings. In real life there are many penalties every week. In Pes if you get a penalty you feel you should go buy the lottery ticket. There are almost no fouls throughout the match. So much shocking challenges go unpunished. How is that realistic? It's normal for a GK to trip a player? In real life it's a penalty and yellow/red card 90% of the time. Just go take a look at WE7 and you'll see how the foul system should work. In WE7 I was getting penalties when I should, receiving fouls when I should, got booked for a standing tackle which I fully deserved. More fouls also led to more FK opportunities which means more FK goals, something that is also rare in Pes 2010. There should be more penalty and FK goals and less open play goals. Also I only average about 2 yellow cards per season in Pes 2010. In only 3 games on WE7 I grabbed more yellows than an entire season of Pes 2010.

Well there you have it. I hope someone from Konami can see this and fix all these problems for 2011. I want no excuses because everything I mentioned is in WE7 but not Pes 2010. That means its very possible to fix these problems. Graphics are excellent already so no need to work on them. Animations are ok but only work on them after gameplay. Start working on what really matters and improve the gameplay. Make Pes challenging again. Go play WE7 and try to realize why you were king back then. Use it as inspiration and bring Pes 2011 back to the throne.

At the moment I feel like scrapping Pes 2010 and editing WE7 again and play that full time. Sure the graphics are nice this year and I can play on my big screen. Sure there's not even enough teams for a full league in WE7 but you had the one thing right that really mattered and that's gameplay.

I've had tons of injuries on PS3 this year (including two REALLY long term numbers), though all on the training ground. One youth with an A rating was out 35 weeks after only his second day in the squad, and now he won't renew his contract because he hasn't been played enough! :^|

I mostly wish the AI would try attacking through the middle occasionally. I also agree that the worse the opposition, the more likely they are to screw you. Big teams are usually beatable, but 19th place in D2 is like playing the 12 Disciples (extra man and all), and those pricks have quite the manager.

Good points,

But it's very simple, look at both Barcelona and Chelsea in real-life, look at why they are so difficult to beat; it's simple, Barcelona's short-passing possession football cannot be simulated correctly in a 10 Minute Simulation.

You cannot play Football in 10 Minutes, PES is more like a pin-ball game with graphics and minimalistic player individuality... midfield-build-up play is non-existent and will never be necessary if the gameplay concept is custom made for 10 minute matches.

Every Football title to date, from the first ISS to the latest FIFA game, is meant to be played for 10 minutes per game and is unplayable when you try to play 20 minute games; this is proof that the CONCEPT is meant for short and repetitive 10 minute games, which is precisely why after PES5 the learning-curve and "evolution" has not been what many of us expected...

WE7 would not be good enough anymore, it's an old pin-ball concept that FIFA 2011 would destroy; PES will not be very good under the 10 Minute Deadline, if it's ever going to improve significantly as a 10 Minute Arcade game; Konami will need to change the concept and do something very similar to what EA currently does with FIFA.

In other words, Konami will need to replace their outdated 10 Minute Concept with a more up-to-date FIFA-esque 10 Minute Concept; thus PES will no longer be the PES you know.

Bottom Line: the only way PES can actually improve (without turning into a FIFA double) and still feel like a next-gen version of what games like PES5 tried to do, is by replacing the 10 Minute Concept with a new 20 or 30 or 40 Minute Concept.

Anyways,

You made some good observations nevertheless, and I don't mean to lecture you, but I'm just saying that the real problem (believe it or not) is: TIME, and the reluctance to move on, there is life after WE7...
