How to make my own emblem?

Hi there,

I try to create a fantasy emblem for my master league team.

But all my emblems look like s..t when it comes to point to bring them in a 128x128 size. All the HD Emblems (png) out there have sharp edges and doesn't look pixelated. Mine do...

So can anyone give me a hint what I am doing wrong and how to improve my results.

What I do:

1. Use gimp
2. Create a image i.e. 1280x1280
3. Draw my emblem, i.e. a simple white Circle with a coloured edge and a simple symbol in the middle.

Everything looks fine till now

4. Shrink it to 128x128 and save it as png
And thats the point where the result is going to look bad :realmad:

If I start with 128x128 (to avoid the resizing) the result even looks more pixelated at the end...

What am I doing wrong? All these 128x128 emblems out there are looking sharp and clean? Is gimp the completly wrong tool for creating these emblems?
