I get destroyed in rival matches in ML

Any tips on how to win against rivals? I do so much worse in those matches... Was doing fairly well in ML but then 3 matches against rivals in a row, 3 defeats by 3-1, 1-6 (!!!) and even 2-1 against a pretty weak rival, there go my chances of winning the league... AI pressure is crazy and they basically run circles around me, my possession ends up way lower than in all other matches even against stronger teams in the CL, etc. This is in Top Player btw, and if I play against these teams in exhibition mode I mostly win!
