now fifas got more build up play and pro evo has the running from one end of the pitch to the other with the fastest guy pes fanboys say its ok now!!!

hazey. Do you have to butt in and critisise everyone's opinions after every post? Don't you realise that people have different opinions to you?

I have both games, and I can say that I much prefer PES. Reasons for this.

Gameplay - aside from defensive positioning, first touch controls and standing tackles, PES is generally superior to FIFA, which I feel is still to get passing as smooth as PES, which account for 90% of the game, basically. Also on FIFA you cannot actually beat a player. I know in PES2008 it was too easy to beat players, but in PES2009 the balance is right.

Options - FIFA has all the licensed competitions, but they all seem to boring and samey, with Master League and League/Cup on PES, it feels right, the atmosphere, the presentation, etc.

BAP/BAL - PES has a much more relaxed system, unlike where on FIFA you got judged for every 2 seconds out of position.

Overall, while FIFA has made progress, PES2009 is definately my favourite.

Hi everyone,

Right, I have been an avid fan of Pro evo since the Days of International Superstar Soccer, and iv'e bought it every year except this one. In which I bought FIFA 09 because the demo looked good, and I was disapointed with Pro evo last year. The online was terrible and nothing had changed. I'm a big fan of the master league and enjoy building my team up and getting to the top. The only problem for me last year and the last few years is that im so familair with how to play pro evo and how to pass it past defenders and take them on, that it doesn't take me very long to stuff teams about 6-0 on the hardest setting.

FIfa 09 is pretty good but i'm left wondering if this Pro evo is a lot better than last years. Is the online fixed? Is the master league more in depth? Whats 'be a legend' like? And are there any new cutscenes/Graphics any better?

I appreciate that it's a bit chunky to read but your opinions will sway my vote whether to trade in the quite good fifa, in order to take a gamble on my beloved Pro evo.

Thanks in advance

Rob

Hello Rob.

I am an honest and also an intelligent gamer.

I hated last years ProEv and have been of the opinion that the series has been increasingly cheap and stale for the past few years. Furthermore, I am prone to making my anti-pes feelings known on a very regular basis. Therefore, it seems people have been quite surprised that I have been largely positive about this years game.

Top of the list of the age old (since Pes4) pessisms that I despise has been the fact that the #1 route to goal has always been the cut-backs or if the cut-back isn't an option right away, then the highly ugly, cheap, and unrealistic dribbling and dribbling inside the box until the certain cheap goal appears. This year, I am absolutely fucking delighted to say that this unrealistic, uncreative, and disgustingly cheap style of gameplay no longers pays the dividends that it once paid thanks to the vastly improved defensive AI and also the fact that tackling is much easier. In PES2009, if u get a chance of a crack at goal, then your best bet is to take it as if u hold it up looking for the lame easy goal, then you are more likely to lose possession as a result of the easy tackling and also the AI cramming the dangerzone with defenders. Sadly however, this only really applies to the offline game as my experience of the online game has been rather horrible again. In online mode, as a result of the lag, the game is not as responsive especially when defending due to the fact that whoever is in possession of the ball is the 'host' so to speak. This means that online, lame goals are still the best route to goal albeit with less assurances of success than in previous PES's.

Other than this feature (which for me was always the quintessential downfall of all PES games since the godawful PES4), the game still plays very similar to previous versions of the game albeit a very finely polished up version of the same old engine we have played to death for years. In the midfield department, the game is way behind FIFA's ultra realism but still provides much more variation in possible game styles than in previous PES games. However, it is the final third of the game where PES wins hands down. The player has more control and more options than ever both with super crisp responsiveness of a very fluid fast flowing game. Even the defending is very rewarding with goal saving tackles being both a very necessary and regularly achievable part of the game. What both the defending and attacking on PES have in common is that success relies hugely on timing, impulse reactions, and instinct rather than on knowledge of how the AI is likely to calculate the situation (a la FIFA style).

So although it essentially same old PES, it is the best ProEv ever and a very solid game albeit not without aggravating flaws. My major issue with the game is the floaty crossing and the inconsistent shooting. As far as the shooting goes, a double tap of the shoot button is generally required to ensure that the shot is hit with some venom (why this is not mentioned in the manual is beyond me). However, the rules governing the shooting are not consistent which can be very frustrating. As for the crossing, in certain situations, the length of time u hold down the cross button does seem to effect the velocity of the crosses....but sometimes not. This leaves the gamer totally oblivious as to the nature of the cross that he is going to execute. Most of the time, the crosses are weak and floaty, and generally unsatisfying....even if a goal comes at the end of it.

My personal verdict is that for offline 2 player gameplay, then PES2009 is the ultimate in video soccer gold despite FIFA09 being superior in so many departments. If however you are looking for an online experience, then sadly PES2009 is one to avoid yet again. Whilst there are a few who report the online to function well, it seems that most suffer unacceptably poor performance of some kind or another. Despite the game literally going 'platinum' within its first week the servers population is very low even during peak hours. For most people, the online experience is simply not worth the hassles. Perhaps Konami will address these issues in due course, but past experiences would suggest that the community would be foolish to get their hopes up on this one.

For offline, PES is the King. For online, FIFA wins hands down by a country mile!

i admit fifa isnt perfect and its impossible to beat a man i've said that
but to call every major competition in major football boring? c'mon thats ludicrous
then to say the same master league thats thrown out every year is better is crazy

i also agree with you on the judgement of posistion in the BAP on fifa
it seems to want to pen you in and give you no freedom, which i've also said before

I haven't done the same because I am only replying to you in particular, because you've critisised every single pro-PES post in this thread.

And yes, I find Master League far more interesting than... say... the Austrian Cup, or the Belgian League. In fact, for all these cup competitions, FIFA doesn't have any International Cups, and if you try and set one up, it takes about 30mins just to choose all the teams.

With Master League you develope your own team in an involving way, which is better suited to a football SIM than FIFAs manage mode is. FIFA's management mode is like their old (and utterly shit) manager games, but where you can play the games yourself.

get PES and throw fifa out the window

This guy hasn't played fifa obviously. I own both games.

Online - Fifa 09 winner...pes 2009 is woeful cant even play 2 vs 2 with a friend it reminds me of the first online games on the original xbox so so out of date. Compare it to fifa and it is shameful, anyone who has playedor owns fifa must accept this. I would love the online options of fifa in pro but the konami developers are inept in this department.

Become a pro/legend - Tie

Graphics - - Fifa 09 winner

Audio - Fifa 09 winner

Gameplay - hmmm... still undecided. I must be honest and say that fifa is very frustrating at times but I'm sure thats because i am so used to PES. I've gradually got used to it and then bought pes 2009. It's quite challenging as you need to do certain things different to pes08. Though I think there are a lot of bugs, thru balls to a pacy centre forward are undefendable.

There is no doubt at all that next year Fifa will be the best game, the engine and online situaton is too far advanced for pes to catch up and if fifa developers listen to fans about the improvements required as they did last year there wil be no contest. Lets put this simply PES hasnt improved for 3 years pes 6 ps2 still remains the best game.

Fifa 2010 will be amazing

PES 2010 - does anyone expect a miracle??? I have been let down too many times pes 6 on 360 followed by pes 2008. pes 2009 should have been the first game on next gen not the 3rd:realmad:

fifa gives you the option of playing ther managment mode and its an option of many, bar the master league what does pes have too offer bar BAL, which is a poor mans BAP, wer as fifas managment mode is a poor master league i guess you could say

Before we continue this discussion, I must point out that I don;t have online, but from what I know, FIFA does win on that count.

Anyway, once you take online out of the equation, then the games are equal in terms of options, aside from the amount of leagues offered by FIFA, since you can play leagues and cups in PES too.

My point about the obscurity of the Austria and Belgium inclusions is that FIFA's depth isn't exactly as good as it initially seems - particularly when a lot of these players are badly researched (likeness and stats).

PES definately has a longer offline lifespan than FIFA, because things like Be A Legend and Master League have a certain addictability factor. FIFA recognises it doesn't have that, which is why Be A Pro is 4 seasons long. Another reason for PES being more addictive, and one of the reasons why the core gameplay of PES has always been better than FIFA's is the variety of goals you will score. With FIFA, all the goals were finesse shots from the edge of the box.

right whats the (if your playin on playstion) R2 button do on pro evo/ finesse shot, what have pro evo made you do more now and incorporated from fifa? they've the core shot a more power bast blast shot. so now more goals in pro evo are finesse too

as for badly researched stats, yes fifa has lapses, but c'mon pro evos just as bad, adriano last game? that was major, david suazo this game even worse, as for research from lower based teams, i'll use yorkshire orange, better known as hull city, if your tellin me ther researched, your mistaken

yes i agree the BAP is short and should be longer

I haven't played Fifa 09 Rob but I absolutely love PES 2009!

I've only played about 20 games so far but it's far more of a challenge than 2008. I'm like you and used to stuff teams 5 or 6-0 if I wanted to (Even on top player).

I'm playing a Champ Lgs comp with Liverpool at min and I only qualified for knock-out stage by goal dif! I lost to Inter 2-1 in last 16 first leg but beat them 1-0 at home... and this is on regular mode!

I've got Fiorentina in Quarters and can't wait to get home tonight! I haven't felt like that about PES for over 3 years! :D

Hope this helps?

I had my doubts about PES09 -but- after hearing what some "veterans" have said about the Full game, I'm quite Confident I won't be playing PES6 yet again.

PES without the Cut Back Goals must be a great game, even more so if you can NO longer Dribble and Turn in order to create Cheap goals.

And yes, judging by the Videos, PES09 is the same Old -but- still, PES5 is better than any version of FIFA. I think people should consider the FACTS; FIFA has improved but it's still not as good as PES -whereas- PES has not progressed, but remains better than FIFA.

The Best PES yet? that I have to see for myself.. But anyways, How does PES09 plays in your Opinion?? Is it a PES5, or is it more like PES3?

And, is the AI Cheating as bad as in PES08??

Another thing I'd like to know is about the Build Up Play.. is there a Significant Difference between Dribbling in the Middle of the Pitch -and- Dribbling Near the Goal Area?? I would be annoyed if Midfield Play is just as tight as Play in the Goal Area.

Anyways, it's great to hear Positive comments from you.. also was reassuring to hear Dundon's comments, Kevthedrummer, ceysin, etc..

I still have Not played PES09, so I cannot comment on anything really. But judging by what I'm hearing, it seems Konami have released a proper PES title this time around.

So, probably, the year will go by faster -and- maybe PES 2010 will be the promised "Overhaul" -with- a New Engine that can finally offer more variations to the Old 8 Directional Movement and Arcadey Animations.

reading all these comments, and seeing it, and playing both games, i believe pes is far better than fifa, i think it still feels the same as all fifa's have been, sticks to your feet very arcadey tryin to go for realism but then seem to not, i must admit i like the be a pro, loving the skill stick, but the actual core gameplay is still nothing on pro evo who ever says pro evo isnt responsive theres something wrong with you its like every other pro you have to get used to before it clickes. the problem i had wiv fifa be a pro is tht i played it with man utd and kept playing with all these people i've never heard of, pro evo has gone for of a challenge of having to prove yourself before gettin the chance, yea ok you may get decent tranfers off the bat but it better than player in ur beloved team in fifa to find most of the players you've never heard of, i played 15matches and only once did i have the full man utd team out. so for me this year pro evo is the only football game there is. fifa's good but it isn't a challenge, its one of them what u see is wat u get i've always felt tht way wiv fifa, pro evo is alot of challenging and more for the hardcore gamer who loves to keep learning and for the die hard fanatics of football.

There are of course still cut back goals, its just that thanks to the vastly improved defensive AI and ease of tackling, they aren't always the best option. Only go for the cut-back if it is on. This is a huge difference from how things were before where it would be wise to pass up a chance to get an effort in on goal in favour of holding the ball up waiting on the AI to peel open like a sardine tin before slotting home the cheap goal. Like I said, this does not apply so much online cos the tackling is harder to perform due to the lag being mostly with the gamer who is not in possession.

It plays much better than both PES3 and PES5. It is similar to PES5 in that goals are quite hard to come by but also similar to PES3 in terms of the gameplay balance. Put it this way, PES 09 has displaced PES3 as being in my view, the best ProEv of all time.

It is possible to perform much more varied midfield plays but it requires knowing how the AI is likely to respond when u decide to play any ball but a low pass as oppossed to having the control mechanisms at your disposal to win 50/50 and/or awkward balls as the FIFA09 gamer has. But still, the midfield play can be very good and pleasing to execute. One thing that PES has over FIFA09 in all departments is responsiveness. Important in midfield, crucial in the final third where PES beats FIFA hands down makign PES the better of the two games despite FIFA being much superior in practically every other department.

The AI still cheats like an Italian but hey ho. I never really played PES 08 so much but certainly in PES6 the AI interfered to the point where a n00b could beat a vet depending on whom the 'Gameplay Momentum Engine' favoured. Not noticed that so much on PES 09. However, I have noticed that by simply choosing to play as France, you are choosing a team who have trouble linking up well and leave gaps all over the pitch. Seabass has a tendency to bend the AI in his games to mimic what he witnesses in real life. A well known example from past PES games was that in PES5, if u chose Norway against Brazil, you would have a very strong chance of winning! This was cos Seabass watched a friendly match where a Norway side beat a much superior Brazil side. Sad but true. So long as Seabass is executive producer of ProEv games these annoying aspects will be part of the game.

Like I said before. Hold up the play around the goal area and watch the penalty box get cramm packed with opposition defenders.

Overall what can I say except is a bloody good game this year.....AT LONG LAST! (Online mode excluded from this accolade).

I'm guessing you've already switched FIFA for PES??

As for the AI fixing matches all the time, I basically never touched PES08 after the first 2 weeks, but I played the game on the hardest level -and- the AI Cheating was ridiculous.. it actually makes PES6 look good in terms of AI Cheating.

And as for Seabass, I think it's great that he "bends" the AI of certain things to Fit his vision.. But I think Seabass should give us the (same) freedom to Tweak with this settings Ourselves.

Maybe include New Features into the game, something like Player Tendencies, something to determine the Tactical Movement of each player. Meaning that if Two players have very similar Tactical Stats and Tactical Movements -then- they might Not work that well as a TEAM, consequently leaving Gaps, etc, etc..

I think that Konami finds themselves in a much better situation this year, because it seems they already Know How to work with a Next Gen Console. So, maybe now Seabass and Co. might find it in them to finally Introduce a Next Gen system of Stats and Special Abilities.

We should really start seeing more Depth in terms of Tactical Stats -and- Konami should definitely consider Introducing Next Gen Animations for PES 2010, the 8 Directional movement is too Outdated.

But again, Konami finds themselves in a better situation.. they Only need to Elaborate on the Outdated Stats and Special Abilities, wich they Know How to work with -and- on Updating the Animations and 8 Directional Movements.

Basically keep the Gameplay -but- further Elaborating on the Realism of the Simulation by adding; Realistic Restrictions, adding new Stats and Animations. They'll probably need a New Engine for that.

Anyways, really appreciate your Review.. PES09 sounds like a Classic, and I'm particularly looking forwards to the Improved Gameplay in the Goal Area. Unfortunately I'll have to wait till Nov 12.
