I've just recently mastered it, it seems to be much improved on we7 & pes3. In a direct free kick this is what I do... I drew this so bare with it I'm sure its clear (hehe) This is what I want the ball to do from this position:

Then as you hold down the power bar to about the ammount shown here, press and hold :R1: , as well as Left and Down on the D-PAD
Please note that you should probably use better free kick takers such as Beckham and Zidane etc etc otherwise this wont really work. The best thing to do is the direct free kick section in the challenge training which is superb and certainly helped me! Its the same in open play in a game as well incase you were wondering. Try not to sprint as you do this because it takes some accuracy off the shot. Again, please use more able players.

Hang on... I just re-read your last post where you said "except free kicks" lol but its the same in open play as I said... its just harder to do. Good Luck. Boy do I feel silly
