On the xbox however the actual game is not installed on the hard drive so the actual game engine cannot be patched. However you are correct in stating that certain games have the ability to access extras downloaded to the hd.

Actually xbox games are run through and .xbe file, similair to the PC exe. The xbox is set up as a pc basically, if there are files on the xbox HDD that are in the same directory structure as the CD, the xbox checks to use those first, as a PC game would also do
