I've found that Liverpool are quite easy to play as, providing you understand their weaknesses.
The standard formation is quite good, just change the run settings so your full backs bomb forward, as do your wingers, with a CF dropping back on occassion. Change defence settings as its set to maximum defence for all players as well.
My Team (stock players).
GK Riena,
RB Arbeloa or Sissoko
CB Carragher & Agger
LB Riise or Arbeloa
DMF Alonso or Mascherano (depends who you are playing against, Mascheranbo is paceir than Alonso)
CMF Gerrard or possibly Sissoko or Lucas
RMF Pennant or Benayoun
LMF Babel, Aurelio or Kewell.
CF Torres & Kuyt
1. Finnan is very slow and will only get slower. If you are playing against anyone pacey you'll need to put Arbeloa into the RB Position, or Use Sissoko (doing this is ML, allows you to save a good player from stangation as I find that Mascherano and Alonso take up the DMF spots really easily.
2. Gerrard bosses any midfield and provides excellent defensive and attacking capablities all over the park. If you place him on the right, you will isolate Gerrard and Players both computer and Human, will have a much easier task against you. Gerrard is a CMF, so use the man as a CMF. If you have space and the ball with Gerrard, run at the opposition, Even if they have pacey CB like Arsenal, Gerrard is strong enough to shrug then off for a while. Run into the box and as you enter it, unleash a powerful shot. Most times its on target, and if the goalie saves it, he can only parry it for a corner or a rebound.
3. Torres is not the be all and end of of Liverpool defence. He's strong, pacey and accurate, and can do everything well, but he's still one man. Bear that in mind when attacking. When in the ML, he will become an absolute beast after 1 or 2 seasons.
4. Kuyt. Kuyt is strong and capable CF. IMO he's better than Voronin & Crouch, however you might be able to use Kewell in his place, because Kuyt is not the paciest.
5. Wingers. Unfortunately, Liverpools wingers aren't fast. Their not that good, but they are good enough. Don't expect to beat men with them, but they are reasonably quick and can pass & cross. You won't be making any surging runs into the box against most oppisition, but you should be able to get enough space to cross into the box and well. Your side backs happen to be quick so they can support the wingers.
6. Attacking options. Keep the ball. Pass it out to the flanks, cross it into the box. If there is space, give it to Gerrard and let him make a surging run into the box. He has a very powerful shot, and your friends and computer opponents will learn to hate Stevie G, Just like I hate Zlatan Imbrahimovic. Your central midfield can pass the ball and pass it well. Alonso, despite lacking pace, is a very good player. Use him to set up attacks.
7. Defence? Remeber that Agger and Carragher aren't quick. They're nmot Hyppia slow, but you'll want to step off opponents until yopu get support. Arbeloa, Riise and Sissoko will help, as will having Gerrard in the Centre of the park as he can track back as required.
cheers for the detailed answer
