Liverpool vs. Sporting Gijon

As I seem to be struggling to summarise my issues with PES2010, I thought I'd just play an Exhibition match against the COM, and record how many times something wrong with the gameplay happens.

So, I've gone for Liverpool vs. Sporting Gijon (the latter being randomised), and I played it on Professional difficulty (I was on Top Player, but til yesterday I hadn't played PES since November) and I've set the match time to 20 minutes. So here we go...

2mins in: after playing it out wide to Glen Johnson, I try and beat the Gijon left mid, but since everyone has exactly the same pace when I am on the ball, I play it forwards to Kuyt, and then back to Johnson, and try the early cross. Obviously this presents me with a chance, as it always does, and Torres's header from just inside the box is pushed away for a corner, by a keeper who saved it out of luck rather than skill.

3mins: the corner is cleared after a wee scrap (which I don't mind, it's realistic) and it is clearly high up towards their striker (Barral), however, for some reason it won't allow Skrtel to challenge for the header, instead the Slovak just creeps up behind him and watches Barral take down the ball on his chest.

4mins: I actually beat a man with Johnson, who managed to send the Gijon player the wrong way, and so I actually can put a cross in from the byline for once. It evades Gerrard's head by a few centimetres and is cleared (by the defender managing a flying back-flick while jumping the opposite way, obviously), but then Jon Champion says "Beautifully tucked away!"

7mins: I work a crossing chance for Riera down the left, and his decent cross it perfectly towards the feet of Dirk Kuyt, 8 yards out, and the Dutchman... diving headers it?!?!?! It rolls nicely to the keeper who picks it up. From the keeper's clearance, I again can't make my player challenge for the header, or even move him into any other position than half a foot behind the Gijon player. Anyway, I win the ball, and try to attack through the middle, but Torres' pass to Kuyt instead goes to the Gijon player who is 45degrees away from Kuyt (from Torres' perspective).

9mins: they win a corner, and when they put it in, I finally get my player positioned in the perfect place... but then a Gijon player just pushes him out of the way (not literally, like pushing that happens in real football; he just walked into the space occupied by Mascherano, who slid out of the way) but they head over.

11mins: I was enjoying a nice peroid of passing the ball around 40yards from their goal. Pass it back to Mascherano, who takes a touch, then, instead of passing it (as I told him to do) he instead runs with it straight into the nearest Gijon player)

12mins: I am now trying to win the ball back, currently controlling Skrtel. They pass it to a guy who is exactly next to Skrtel... so the game changes my control to Johnson

15mins: a Gijon player is running down the left flank, I close him down with Kuyt, who tackles him, but in the process manages to run the ball out of play. The ball wasn't particularly close to the touchline, but he insisted on kicking it out anyway.

16mins: GOAL! Okay, credit to PES there, this is just a normal goal (apart from the finish); I pass it to Torres, who slides it to Riera, who manages to get into the box and pass it back to Torres who (despite me wanting him to slide it in at the near post) just lamely sidefoots into the centre of the goal; it still goes in due to the keeper just standing still.

18mins: Gijon go on a mazy run down the left wing, beating three Liverpool players. Mainly because I can't control the one I want to, and second player pressure is useless. It's played inside, and despite me telling Lucas and Mascherano to try and tackle the Gijon player, they both run behind him instead, allowing him to hit a weak shot at Reina.

20mins: tried another early cross, and given that I am controlling my left winger, who is in acres of space at the far post, I assume that he's about to have a decent chance. However, to my surprise, the Gijon player on the edge of the box casually nods it away. Why does this surprise me? Because Torres is 1m away from him.

22mins: I give up and put Football Manager on.

Re:

No offence, but you should just have entitled this 'I love to piss and moan'.

Pro evo is always a pain in the balls when you first get the new one. I have, at some point, been convinced that very new incarnation of the game was fucked and just plain wrong. It's not the game, though. It's you.

There's a definite learning curve to 2010. It's not easy to master at first, which, I suppose, leaves you with a choice to persevere or, as you did, stick football manager on.

But let's be plain about this. There's nothing wrong with the gameplay.

Seriously? You think that they got it perfect?

I might be being picky in my post, but I like full control of my players, but you really must be the most blinkered person I've seen if you think that there's nothing wrong with (just from the top of my head):
ANY of the set pieces (but mainly penalties and shooting free kicks)
The fact that the players more or less all run at the same pace
The goalkeepers (especially low shots straight at them, nearly ALWAYS a nutmegged goal)
The fact you can carve open the other team with an early cross every time
etc.

Also, from looking at this forum, probably the biggest complaint is about the online play; I don't even have online play, god knows how little control you have over your players online.

It is a very frustrating game at times i think its becuase when you want to do something the game makes you do something you dont want like passing to a player then your player will turn round and pass it back to the defence and button lag is just the worst for me so that everything is like a 2 secounds behind in what you want to do i CBA to give more reasons why this game isnt right.

Most of the points you have made I have suffered from one time or another which is undoubtably frustrating but I'm sure FIFA has a whole set of frustrations like this of its own?

Yes, it has it's floors but PES 2010 is still the best game on the market!

Without fail, every SINGLE edition of PES/WE I have played (started out with Winning Eleven on the ol Super Famicom/Nintendo...seems like a century ago!) has had acclimatisation issues with the latest editions. It just won't be PES if it ain't hard to start.

Though I have to agree that there are some f-up issues with this edition (GK AI is set to level IDIOT!), I'm still enjoying the game immensely and I guess it's really up to you how you want to see it: Glass half full or glass half empty.

I see plenty of folks here who just get on with it and accept that the chinks are all part of the game and go out and make the best of whatever else the game has to offer.

Best of luck with FM.

So you haven't played FIFA, but you still think PES is the best game out there?

FIFA has it's flaws, but they're either just non-gameplay related (poor offline game options, sluggish menu's, can't try a formation without saving it) or are just random (i.e. occasionally a goalkeeper will lose an aerial challenge to a striker, not in a realistic manner, but more the keeper just missing the ball, but it doesn't happen enough for players to be able to target it as a way to win).

The regularity of PES's errors, combined with too many other things that I can't be arsed to list again (for fear of being called a whinger; although I'd rather whinge than be someone who hands Konami money for whatever they make) makes the gameplay so unplayable that it makes the game redundant.

Um no offense but you that sounds like the most ACCURATE representation of Liverpool. The way we play these days Gijon beating us would not surprise me.

Haha, must be another flaw in the gameplay there then, as I was winning 1-0 when I quit.
