Long Balls and Crosses

It seems that there is some confusion out there as to what a cross actually does on PES. The first thing you have to figure out is which "Long Pass Mode" is best for you. These can be found during match play under System Settings and Button Configuration.

LPM Type 1: "When the player with the ball is in or around the penalty area or near either touchline, he will cross the ball into the box. Long passes will be COM-Assisted" (Put simply, the computer will help you with your crosses).

LPM Type 2: "When the player...(as above)..." BUT "...Long passes will be conducted manually." - You will have to aim towards your player.

LPM Type 3: "When the player with the ball is deeper than the 18-yard line, he will cross the ball into the box. Long passes will be COM-assisted." (Basically ruling out the L1+O for a quick knock into the box).

LPM Type 4: "Carried out using the L1+O buttons only. Long passes will be COM-assisted." (Pressing O is not enough for crosses unless you're aiming into the box, holding L1 with O will cross it with COM-assistance.)

LPM Type 5: "Carried out using the L1+O buttons only. Long passes are performed using the manual method." (No help from the computer and probably meaning the use of manual passing using the L3 button).

Play around with whichever one suits. There are other options in Button Configuration also.

Long passes can be very effective if employed smartly, they may even do for a through ball. Knocking the ball from Full-back to Full-back is also a way of breaking down the opposition by opening up space on the wings. If you're in possession of the ball in an opponents half, using the L1+O can completely open up the defence if you can spot an attacker in space.

But now down the nitty-gritty, serious PES players can score a lot of goals thanks to crossing the ball. Whether you're looking for a tap in, header or the spectacular and acrobatic - crosses are where you'll begin. Regardless of the Long Ball Type you will employ, there are a few things worth knowing.

The "cross" types: There are 3 main cross types depending on the scenario.
If you're sprinting down the wing and you hit O when you reach the byline, the chances are that you'll miss your striker unless he was sprinting with you. It's useful to "look up" as we say on the pitch - with PES we "look down" at the radar. If you think your striker will make it into the centre of the box in time, hit O - the ball should travel towards him and depending on his ability, he will score. You can use R1+R2 (or even sometimes just R2) to move your striker towards or away from the ball if needs be. The first type of crossing (tapping O once) looks for the man in the box.
The second type of crossing requires you to double tap O - this one is handy if your striker is already in the box as it aims the ball towards the nearest striker (usually at the front post) - diving headers and volleys are common here.
The third type of crossing using O is a triple tap and it blasts the ball along the ground. Be wary with this as the keeper can pick these up easily and counter-attack you. Once again moving the player towards the cross will help.
There is one other cross that can be classed as more of a long ball - if you see your other winger running into the box at the top of the screen, hold O - chances are the Full-back will not track back and using R1+R2 you can move your player towards the ball for an almighty volley or header. Eight out of ten will rip through the back of the net!

Aiming: Don't forget that you can aim every cross, even though they are COM-assisted.

One more hint: Through balls can be excellent crosses. Once again you, the winger are on the byline or the area between the box and the throw-in line. Now if you think a cross will go over your striker's head, hold L1+Triangle and the ball will loft usually (in some cases your winger knocks the ball along the ground) towards your striker for an easy tap in or header. Sometimes you can even lob the ball over the keeper for a "run-in" into the net!
