My PS2 died...What to do with it now?

MY PS2 just died in my arms last night, and with superb timing too - my x-port just arrived in the post, but I can't use it!

It's as old as PES2 (2-3 yrs?), so I'd had to open it up and clean the laser eye a lot to get it to load up the DVD's over recent weeks. (Games and Audio on ordinary CD's will still load fine.

Has anyone re-built an old PS2 including installing a new Laser (best price £45) and added a mod-chip themselves? I reckon the price for both would be about £90, but I don't know about the practicalities of chipping.

Is it straight-forward for someone who isn't into soldering, and hasn't even got a soldering iron? Are there reliable chips that only require minimal risk to intall (I don't want to buy laser and chip then find I've broken either them or the PS2 by botching the install)?

With an x-port, would I be better off getting a new UK PS2 (best UK price £125) and sending the old one to a professional to fix and modify (£90 + labour and post)? That would leave me playing PES3 with option files, and eventuallly the old machine returns able to play patched versions of PES3, plus WE7, and WE7i when that's released.

In short, if your euro PS2 died, what would you do, fix it up yourself, get a pro to do it, buy a new one, or buy a pre-modded PS2?

That sucks bro..I would go with a pre-modded PS2 only because it`s a new console and modchip is professionaly installed.

if you fone the sony careline 08705 99 88 77 (national rate) you need to tell the person what is wrong with your PS2 and give them some numbers that are on the machine. they should then deliver a brand new PS2 within 2 days....

oh yeah, £65.....:D

I would buy a pre-modded one to save the hassle of taking it or sending it to get chipped.

In the meantime, if you haven't already, install the X-Port software and download Georginho's latest option file. Copy G's option file into the savedgames folder so that you can transfer it as soon as you get the PS2.

Good luck.

Really, is this a discount on replacement for any current owner, even though my PS2 is now long out of guarantee?

(The guarantee will be voided anyway, because I opened up the console.)

Two votes for a pre-mod PS2 so far. There a couple of pre-modded consoles I've seen on offer, with DMS3 (£240) or Matrix MXL2 (£220). I know someone was shouting about their DMS3-chipped console, is the update facility, which is the only difference I can see between DMS3 and Matrix MXL2, worth the extra cash?

Well i put my first PS2 on ebay. It just had no power and it had a disc read error. It fetched (somehow) £55! With that i put it towards a new one!

Jag87,

Not bad, someone must be putting them together for re-sale.

I've just got of the phone from Sony Careline and gone for their replacement offer (£65) - same version / same serial no. that Henry suggested.

They registered me, suggested all the alternatives in series: cleaning disc, test DVD's on another console, buy a DVD remote control with additional drivers to take it from 1.3 to 2.9 or something similar...then eventually exchange like for like at £65 with dispatch by Christmas Eve (btwn 8 & 6pm) or repair for £80 over 4-5 weeks.

Obviously I went for the exchange - console, plus 1 controller, AV and power leads, plus scart block.

Now I can get to use my new X-port, and Christmas was saved!

Oh, I explained I'd opened it up to clean, having been advised that the discs are ineffective. She said they only work around 1 in 5 times.

This is important, they don't dish out brand new models (driver 3.0 I think).

I have one of their earliest versions, so I'll get a fully re-conditioned one straight from Sony - so proud.

Thx Henry!!

Sounds like you got a good deal. I was gonna suggest a silver ps2 with mod chip pre installed for £230 at http://www.whitedog.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=382

I recently replaced the laser myself which isn't that difficult but I was gonna get Sony to do it but then someone told me that they don't like it if you got a mod chip and they'll charge you extra to remove it or something so I just did it myself.

Anyone know if thats true?
