Kingdom Hearts 2 My hands on view.

Kingdom Hearts 2, such a rare thing in gaming. The first time I heard its soft and charming theme tune I instantly fell in love with one of the warmest and charming videogames I have played in a long time.
Many people see KH2 a mere child’s game, yet I believe it has so much moral depth that it can be played by almost anyone. The rare thing that Sqaurenix and Disney have created is the bridging of audience. The fact that any gender can play this game is something that games in general have lacked. KH2 manages to do this amazing feat by simply merging charm with style. Many gamers who play KH2 seem to usually come from some kind of Final Fantasy background, and the fact that Sqaurenix continually manages to pull out FF cameos draws out one side of its audience together. The second side of its audience come’s from the games vibrant colour and charm from Disney. Disney’s characters are the vocal point in attracting a female audience. Disney has always had the magic of bringing families together, and by that this is how KH2 broadens its audience because of the mixture of themes it portrays.

Even though KH2 is extremely similar to its predecessor, it still manages to create absorbing worlds that once sucked in, you don’t want out. Every time I switch KH2 on, I can’t stop myself from feeling upbeat and enthusiastic. I feel that Sqaurenix and Disney are on to a winner for a substitute for Prozac as its charms comes off to player so easily. It seems that Sqaurenix and the Disney cameos seem to rub of each other perfectly creating a world that really sparks life. The main reason for this match made in heaven seems to work is because of the similar values that they portray for example Friendship Love and courage are just some values that Sqaurenix and Disney represent for them selves in there games or films in general. KH2 and 1 seem to values these attributes so much that gamers can’t help but to get absorbed into there diverse worlds and characters. The feeling you get playing this is that of a fairytale book that never seems to end. Even though I never managed to complete the original due to its lack of skill and erratic difficulty scale, I still felt as though I needed the second.

The story of the original was a simple good versus evil, with basically a Sqaurenix style that manages to manipulate this boring cliché. The second seems to continue this Sqaurenix tradition but with an extra gear. During this quest most gamers may feel puzzled and frustrated by its usually overcomplicated storyline. Once you’re able to grasp its plot detail, then this is when you start to appreciate what the games trying to achieve. The story begins with you controlling a character called Roxas who lives in a town called Twilight Town. This adventure with Roxas acts as a prelude to the gamers who haven’t played/completed the original, this would last approximately two and a half hours. The story around Roxas is made more complex then need be, so I’ll explain briefly. Roxas and Sora seem to share a bond with one and other, and it seems that our hero Sora has been deleted from existence with Roxas taking his place. Soon after Sora returns taking Roxas with him. From then on Sora is reunited with friends Donald and Goofy, who are threatened by a new threat the Nobodies who are being controlled by the mysterious group known as Organisation XIII. It also seems our old friends the Heartless are back causing trouble as usual, and from then on Sora Donald and Goofy set off on a quest that revolves around defeating the wicked and finding friends the King and Riku. The return of Maleficent did enormously displease me due to the fact that she was defeated in the original and that this does make the game seem more like a game that has no point, because it seems no matter how many times you defeat a mortal enemy it seems that It will always come back further reducing the point in playing. I would have much preferred a new character instead of cheaply bringing back the beaten.

Graphically this game has always been powerful on its own. The fact that Sqaurenix are evolved will always mean high presentation value. The graphics used seem to perfectly bring out the character in its worlds, levels and characters. To think what Sqaurenix can achieve with the PS3 is simply mind boggling. The one thing that Sqaurenix always manage to pull of with working with the PS2 is the way the show a characters emotions so perfectly. This really does draw out the empathy between game character and game player. Empathy in a game like this is highly important when trying to connect the audience to the game adds a hell of a lot more to the overall experience. All for what Sora represents in KH2 genuinely is what people fight for in reality and this is what gamers relate to. I’d like to think that there is a part of Sora in everyone and that aspect of the game seems to encourage the warmth that portrays throughout the game. The vibrant colours essentially create great worlds to be in, and games like this generally please me because they are not just games that people just pick up and play when they are bored, they are places that people can go for when reality bears to much.

Another area that KH2 excels in is its audio level of quality. The tunes that are composed are of the highest level. Essentially they have a similar style to Sqaurenix’s FF games, with an added Disney magic that gives it its own unique feel. One of my favourite parts of KH2 audio quality is its big money voice work, with such stars like Haley Joel Osment of the sixth Sense playing Sora. Others Like Christopher Lee Playing DIZ/Ansem the wise really do show how far videogames are going. The Voice acting is truly outstanding. Seeing that games are maybe now seen as possibly the biggest entertainment sources around is a remarkably huge feat for the industry. Even though this is just the beginning of games competing with films on a production level value it seems very promising for the future of gaming budgets. Whether games will one day take over films as the dominating medium only time will tell.

The gameplay may seem KH2 major weakness but I beg to differ whether gameplay is the sole point to this game. Like KH1 it is evident that 2 is still rather repetitive and mind numbingly a sole button masher. I would say that the gameplay in general has grown in depth not to the point of it being perfect, but an improvement nonetheless. KH2 still revolves around travelling from world to world defeating hordes of similar enemies repeatedly, yet its charming story and levels makes the gameplay seem less bland than it is. The odd gummi ship mini games once again return, but in a better not perfect flamboyant shooter. The original gummi ship levels were far too complicated for its own good resulting in a mindless button masher with no skill need. It’s still apparent that the gummi ship levels only use is to be filler in breaking up the constant hack and slash of its combat system. It seems that the new gummi ship levels represent the core combat system in which that they both resemble there past selves and only the newly added depth and style manages it to be one better that KH1. The core gameplay seems rather the same, but new additions such as the ability to manoeuvre the camera with the right analogue stick seems to have been a massive help compared to its frustrating original. Other gameplay tweaks such as the ability to absorb either Donald or Goofy and turn into a Dante Devil May Cry kick ass warrior is rather enjoyable. This new ability may make the game seem easier due to the fact that you are almost invincible, but for some reason it does feel really rewarding in a sense that you just defeated the boss in a minute kind of way. This may seem like a turn off for some, but nonetheless it is fun. The combat isn’t as bad as many reviewers say. The developers seem to want the game to be simple and fun and by doing this I personally think this is why it’s such a success with its female audience. Overall the combat system gives you all the power for you to have fun with.

In terms of how long until you’re bored is solely based on how patient you are. The amount of cut scenes this game has to offer is incredible and this instalment will put off many, but oddly to me I seem to enjoy them just as much as playing. Playing KH2 from beginning to end in general will take gamers around 50 hours to compete. Like all Sqaurenix games the amount of time you put into this game is purely based on how much you want out of it in the end. Overall Kh2 feels like a Disney feature film that plays like the modern RPG in which it’s a basic hack and slash with level up aspects. The only thing that would stop me from completing this game is if the difficulty becomes as erratic as the first. Sora versus Riku comes to mind in terms of erratic difficulty in which it becomes frustratingly hard to get past. KH2 is an incredible experience which plays itself on the fact that its more than just a game and more of a way of escaping reality for more than a couple of hours. Sqaurenix Disney and BVG have managed to create a game for the second time so individual that it won’t be so easy to forget, and by that I wouldn’t be surprised if a third is released on the PS3 in the coming years. A PS3 Kingdom Hearts Could be something really special in which it could take gamers into an immersive world that nobody will want to escape.

What do ya think?

Thanks for reading.
