New Interview With Konami

I'm sorry, I've been on and off for the past few days and I can't remember if someone posted this before. If so, forgive me and this thread can be closed.

From OPS2...

What were the main gameplay aspects which the team concentrated on improving this year?

We started the AI from scratch. You can see it especially on the defending side. So it's much more difficult to score now than it was in Pro Evo 2. The best way to describe the defence is 'thicker', as opposed to last year's which was 'thinner'. When you play the new game you will realise that you must now try to penetrate that 'thick' defence. And once the defending side was enhanced, we also had to modify the attacking so you could break down this 'thick' defence. The strikers move more realistically now - like in real football. The animation of the players has also changed a lot. For instance we didn't like the style of dribbling in PES2 so we've changed that. We've also added fun features like the Marseille Roulette, which is the spin that Zidane does. Overall the gamplay has changed a lot.

The shooting has also altered quite a bit too, what was thinking there?

I totally forgot to mention that! [laughs] We have experimented with the ball physics to make it more like real life, which affects the shooting. Like in real football, if you hit the ball with the right timing it will be a low fast drive - like Paul Scholes does for England or Oliseh does for Nigeria. This is why the shooting feels different this year.

Is that key to the Pro Evo philosophy - concentrating on the way the ball moves first rather than the players?

Well the key is trying to make the game as real as possible, and the ball physics is key to that.

We think that the gameplay in Pro Evo 3 is already pretty close to perfection. Where do you plan to take the series next?

Firstly, thank you! Our ultimate dream is 11 against 11 online play, with each person controlling one player. But there are still a lot of areas which don't feel completely like football yet - for instance team patterns and player movements. There's much more to experiment with and implement. We've already started work on the next project, and the current highlight is the work we're doing on the header system. In PES4 you will have much more control of how your player heads the ball, so that's one of the key points for the future.

Do you think online play is likely to make it into PES4 then?

Yes, I plan to make an announcement about online next year. It's becoming closer.

The other thing which comes up again and again in the emails we've been sent is the licensing issue. What progress is being made on that front?

I can tell you it isn't going to get worse. [laughs] We're already moving ahead, and acquiring more licenses. The team's dream is to have every licence. It's not as though we don't want it to happen on our side, but it's maybe a bit political within the company. The future is bright, though.

Can you imagine what the game might look like in a few years time, possibly on the next generation of hardware?

Going online is one of our biggest goals. For instance you could create a team with your friends, and just practising together might be fun. The second thing to think about is the offline gameplay. We still think there's a lot of area to expand on, change and improve. One example could be having one unique move for each player. So we'll keep on pursuing those dreams.

Can you tell us about the Winning Eleven Tactics game which was recently announced at the Tokyo Games Show?

In this game you are the manager, but not like a Premiership manager. Here you are just concentrating on the team selection and tactics. It's more like an Italian coach, so you will have some input on acquiring players but you won't have to deal with exactly how the club is run or financed. The emphasis is on winning the match, and the interesting point is how that improves your standing as a manager. So maybe a big club will offer you a job. It's a career game created by the same team as Pro Evo. We haven't decided yet whether to make a Premiership version as it would require quite a lot of tweaking.

Finally, do all the player statistics really get used to determine the outcome of each pass, shot and tackle?

Due to memory constraints we can't factor every single stat into every single move, so some patterns are used. However, our thinking is now to differentiate the style of play between European, African and Asian players. For instance European players tend to dribble differently, and we would like to represent that in the future.

-------------------------

The most interesting things in there, to me, was the strongest hint yet that PES4 would have online playability and maybe some interesting extras to boot. Finally, they aren't procastinating!

Secondly, some exciting points about headers in PES4. I was just reading a post on another thread and a member was complaining about how headers often don't go to the players you want. Looks like Konami are going to add more control next time around. Wow, excited for PES4 even before PES3's release.

Some things i have already read but some things not. Thanks PicturePerfect.
In the interview stands this:
Our ultimate dream is 11 against 11 online play, with each person controlling one player.
i think thats shit. I want to control the whole team!! I think that wouldnt work if each person have one player. What do you think?

NAY WE ARE BUT MEN. ROCK.
It would be good if that was a mode as it would feel as if you were a world class footballer. Also you would have to work as a team and it opens a whole dimension of new possibilities. However I think it would be stupid to limit online play to this and should have a normal multiplayer (ie one on one) mode as well as it is too complex and sometimes you might want something simpler.

I'm pretty sure they'll add a Player Vs. Player system too. It's essential. I don't know, I still fancy 11 Vs. 11 though. So if they do add it successfully, I'll be glad. Sounds very promising. Imagine creating your perfect team with some mates (online or offline) and planning strategies, formations etc. It could prove to be an awexome affair...

I really like 'team creation' sections in football games, along with 'player creation' sections... although most of those these days allow players to have full ratings, which, in a way, is silly because you could make a whole team of perfect players and nobody would stand a chance... but back to the point... along with online access it would be good because you could create your own team and players and have a game against someone else's created team/players... hell... they could even hold a competition... create a team and players and join our tournament... heh... i think that would be really good...

i also think the licences (forgive the spelling :( ) are good, i mean... it would be a good thing to know exactly where you're playing, who you're playing with and against etc.

FIFA (i thought 2003 was a load of clap trap) has loads of licences and really (in my opinion... although my opinion is always wrong) i think the licences are the only thing that sell that game...

I think PES4 should go 2 steps further than FIFA 2004... i think it should take full advantage of the power of the PS3 and have more data than Championship Manager! the same amount of leagues, the same amount of players... to put it simply... PES4 should be Championship Manager, FIFA Football and PES3 all mixed into one game... in other words... it should be as close to reality as I am to the PC screen...

so... uhm... nothing more to say really...
bye bye!

When pes4 is on the ps2 you never can get the amount of data like cm4. Before the pes-serie has an very large database it must come out on the ps3.

Considering the PS3 is likely to come out in 2006, PES6 (if it is called that) will probably be the first KCET football title on it.

I wasn't mocking you, mate. I was referring to the guy above you who suggested PES4 would be on the PS3, which isn't really feasible.

Don't be so hard on yourself GFK. Your English is darn good. Good enough for me, at least.

Luckily, you can read mine english. Its not that difficult but some sentences are very complexed to spell. Because if you compare it with dutch you think: WTF this is not a sentence, but in english its a sentence.....Erh im losing the point...........Anyway i hope that someday pes will have a very very big database, thats more important for me then the licences!!
What do you think?

I'm not too bothered about licenses, you see. Since excellent patches will always be around for me to apply. However, Konami need to aquire licenses to compete with FIFA and, eventually, overtake them. So, essentially, a large database with many leagues/competitions and teams plus licenses is needed.

i agree about da importance of licenses but the sheer gameplay is a telling factor in comparison to FIFA.Pro evo is the best football game coz of the gameplay and the addictiveness aquired in the game

i personally think that with 11 vs 11 concept, Konami is trying to create some sort of gameplay environment like counterstrike so that many people can come together and play in a match, since this this kinda gameplay model has been extremely successful.

I think it is difficult for us to accept this kin of new gameplay but if it really becomes successful(which i believe it would due to konami's undoubted brilliance), it would definitely open up a new era for online gaming....... i think.......

Is this not a PES3 interview?probably not, as i only read this far and thought "hmmmm hang on, why are they comparing PES4 to PES2 and not PES3....."
