Newbie question re: licensing

Okay, so this being the first year that I'll be buying PES, plus my general lack of knowledge on how licensing agreements work in football games, as opposed to U.S. sports games, I'm a little fuzzy on the fake teams vs. licensed teams in PES. For example, I know there are only 2 licensed Premiere League teams (Man U. and Liverpool), and the rest of the teams have fake names/kits. But what about the players? Like, does the team that is supposed to be Arsenal still have all of the real Arsenal players with their real names? Or is Konami not allowed to use any of the real player names if they don't have licensing for the team they play on?

My other question is what exactly are these options files you all keep talking about? I mean, I gather there is a community of PES enthusiasts who go in and edit the kits and logos (and players?) of all the fake teams, to make them reflect their real world counterparts, but how exactly does it work? On the PS3 version, for example, is it just a save file? Or is it an actual patch that you install on your PS3 that alters the game's code somehow? Would I be better off ordering the European version of PES so that I can take advantage of these options files, or will there be files for the U.S. versions as well?

Sorry if I'm being thick, I'm just really new to all of this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yeah man I'll do my best to explain it to you- from playing our US sport games I really failed to understand the intricacies of licensing in football especially in PES. So for instance Konami cant get the license for the Prem so they make fake team names and thats how they get around it. The player names are unchanged except sometimes in national teams but thats a different story.

Option files (if done right) makes playing PES 10x better. Those who make them put a lot of time into creating the kits, updating player likenesses and in some cases adding entire leagues. They are pretty easy to install but you have to remember as a NA user you can only use NA option files and they are specific to counsels as well. Well if you have the 2009 versions of PES on the PS3 I would suggest trying my OF out.

Thanks, Stringer, that was very helpful.

I'm wondering if I should pre-order PES 2010 from the UK. Wouldn't that mean that I could use the UK option files? The game itself isn't region locked, is it? So it should play fine on my American PS3, right? How many US gamers do this?

If this was 2009 I would have said go ahead. In fact I almost did that myself last year. The online mode this year is supposedly fixed so If you buy the Euro version you really wont be able to have a lag free game. All I can say is that this year pategato and myself will be working together to make a top notch OF(for the PS3). However keep in mind that Xbox OF's aren't region specific at all. But for the online sake I say get the NTSC version.

That's good to know. I suppose I'll just wait for the US version so that I can play smooth online matches. Thanks again for your help.

Hi StringerBell, I was reading these posts, and I think I may be in the same situation concerning OF. I shall be buying the UK PES2010 and wonder which is the best OF to use (download via USB and transfer to PS3 region A player). I hope your OF can be used by everyone. Thanks.

Great questions. I asked the very same ones in 2007. I too am from United states. I play the game on PC.

The one and only time I bought the North American version of the game was in 2007, and I was quite disappointed. The game play is exactly the same as the EU version. The problems are:

1. Option files for NA and EU are not compatible.
2. If you own the NA version you can only play online against other NA version players.

Since there is such a small fan base of people who play the NA version, it was almost impossible to play an online game.

I have since purchased the EU versiond of PES 6, PES 2008, and PES 2009. As a matter of fact, I have already pre-ordered my copy of PES 2010.

In short, if you want the most enjoyment out of this game, buy the EU version.

So i assume a thread containing option files will be made when the game gets released and people have been creative? :)
