no commentary in 5.1 mode on XP and X-Fi

I'm running Windows XP SP3 with a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music card and if I select 5.1 mode in settings I get no commentary whereas in stereo mode it works fine. Previous versions of PES work fine as do all my other games and all channels work when testing in the Creative audio console.
