One Thing That Has Always Ticked Me Off About The ISS Series On The PS Were The..

....Penalty Shoot Outs.

Talk about a damn anti-climax to a scorching Cl Final. No indication of what you are really up to infront of the goal. No powerbar, no cursor, no nothing. All you've got is the same lame 8 direction crap since the dawn of ISS footy for the Sony machine.

To me, the Virtua Striker series perfected the epic battle of keeper versus the 11 meter hero. A simple powerbar, plus the added trick of aiming right, but belting it to the left.

So has any of this more than 6 year lobotomised crap changed for PES3 or WE7?

I think a power bar would be a good idea. As for aiming, I had a darts game many moons ago for the Amstrad CPC 464 which had an interesting aiming tool. When pointign straight ahead the target was rock steady, but as you aimed more at the treble 20 (top corners at football for example) the target got harder to control and "shook" more, the harder shot you tried. Maybe for better penalty takers it could be steadier, and for worse (like Alan Thompson---kidding) it could be pretty wild, and where it is when you his square or whatever is where it goes....strength of shot allowing.

I beg to differ on this one. I do not think that a power bar will make the penalty kick any better. One thing I agree is that the Penalty kicks in WE7 and perhaps PES3 need an overhaul. What really amazes me is WE has even created a PK Challenge.
It is indeed a misnomer. There is really no challenge at all. I can even win the PK Challenge with my eyes closed. No bragging. Very soon I will be writing to Konami Japan with suggestions on how to improve on the penalty kicks. All in all it should create some kind of tension.Instead of the power bar, I would rather that the power of the shot depends on the pressure we apply to the directional bar. With experience we will know how much pressure to apply. It is more true to life.

You've made some valid points. The pressure of the direction applied seems like a way to overcome this shoddy craftmanship from Konami.

But have you actually witnessed Virtua Strikers Penalty Shootouts? They really are the best I've seen so far.

the darts idea seems excellent.I also think that goalkeepers should be allowed to shuffle along their line, using R1.I do think there should be a power bar too however, along with the darts technique it'd work a trick. Also, the harder the shot, the more erratic the aimer, and the earlier the keeper has to move it.i.e,if a shot was tapped it'd be easy to place, however the keeper would have a relatively good chance of saving it

Maybe, later on, Konami could insert different animations for different 'keepers while taking penalties. Such as Lehmann's goal-line trot of Richard Wright's star stance.

And how about longer and shorter run-ups for different players? For example, RVN and Henry could have ones out of the box and players like Lauren and Forlan could just take two or three steps before hitting the ball.

I agree, the powerbar is not a good option in my opinion. Agreed it would work against the computer. In two-player mode however, the player that is goaltending will be able to tell if the penaltytaker shoots up or down, depending on the powerbar. .

remember libero grand for the PS.

for free kicks etc you had to pick part of the ball you wanted to kick and also a power bar. it worled really well.

(libero grand was a football game where you only controlled one player with the camera behind him)

I am sorry I do not have Virtua Strikers. If I am not wrong it should be from SEGA. I am in search of ideas. Can you explain how the penalty works in Virtua Strikers.Appreciate it.

Indeed you're right. It's a great arcade footy made by the lads from SEGA.

The one thing I loved about Virtua Striker (VS) is that you could move your penalty taker on the spot.

Let's say you nudge you player a little to the right, press down the shoot button half full, he would most likely belt it right next to the keeper.

But the neat trick was this:

Face your striker all the way to the left. Then proceed to fill the power bar 3/4 full. Now instead of shooting the ball in the left hand top corner, quickly shove you joypad to the right all you can. Now see the keeper fooled to go left while you scored a lovely penalty.

It's a great way to psyche out the opposition.

I don't think you can do that dink. Unless it's by luck and your player scuffs his shot.

Heh, this actually happened to me with Henry. Totally scuffed up shot and animation. Just neatly chipped down the middle.

Happened before the Newcastle match so I didn't have any motivation to save it. Pity.
