As we've seen this year, Stephen Ireland has transformed himself. He's no longer the tormented man he once was. Despite his young age he has developed into a real gem in Manchester City's team. Outshining the major buys and household names of the likes of Robinho and Darius Vassell.

The 1st major improvement I think we all noticed [those of us who watch the PL] is Stevie has vastly improved his work ethic. Which hasn't been of any shock to any Irish fan or Manchester City fan for that matter, you see, during the summer he took up martial arts. His reasoning for this was he was in his opinion, and Sven's somewhat unfit. His Stamina has improved drastically. Which has seen his condition get constantly better almost by the day.

We've seen Ireland, the player not the country attack, a lot more frequently under the new regime, either playing in Left sided mid field role or as almost a Steven Gerrard role in the Man City line up. this is due to his want and need to attack more and to add something new to his game. GOALS! Even when he's outside the box he's showing a good level of sharpness and his general anticipation is proving to be an aspect more prominent in his game nowadays.

His quick step has also led to his capability to get into better positions on the field. His short bursts of pace have seen him roam into space on the edge of the oppositions area's far to often in many opposing managers opinions this year.

Yet I've almost somehow forgot to mention one thing. Which quite obvious to me and hopefully the general consensus too is Ireland's final ball this year has been impressive.... to say the least. His range is ever improving, and who knows he may one day be the reincarnation of Paul Schole's only not in the beautiful red of United but the baby blue of Manchester City.

Now, onto the stats.

Attack/Defence
Some may ask why an attacking mid has such a high defence. Need not, Stephen Ireland defends from the front which is why his value is warranted, as well as his quality sliding. Stephen also has a knack of being in the right place at the right time and moves around the box to get into good positions, aswell as his capability to beat his marker.

Balance
Okay, Ireland may not be a battler taking on the types of Danny Shittu and Papa Boupa Diop. But he certainly can hold his own for such a small man. He may look lightweight, but he can challenge in the air and can definatly run with the ball and not fall over at the slightest hint of a nudge. *cough* Drogba *cough*

Stamina
He used to be quite unfit. Luckily enough he's shaken off that laziness off of his game and has really developed in this region. Now its one of his assets. Its been his most notable improvement in my honest opinion. This stamina has allowed for him to be able to play 45+ games this season.

Response
Ireland as a player is quick to react for free balls, and does quite well to get himself into position and snatch passes from the opponent. He is also quite fast whence responding to handle received balls.

Dribble Accuracy
Ireland is quite a accurate dribbler but he's not immense. Ireland also benefits from his midfield position and for this reason he is also capable at playing on the wing as well as AM. He is a good dribbler, who can get past one or two players without having to pull out all the stocks and trick his way past the backline. His dribbling is simple for the most part, but very effective at times too.

Dribble Speed
He can keep some of his pace when being on-ball to get past opponents. But he's not overly pacey. His good burst of acceleration is also a great boost to his dribbling.

Passing
One of Ireland's biggest assets, and theres not an ounce of doubt about that in my mind. His ability reminds me of a young Elano yet are just that tad bit less accurate and seem to me to have just that little bit more bite. Ireland can open up his team’s play with either his short or long passes and, not only can he initiate attacks, he can also deliver the final pass to set his strikers up in great positions.

Shooting
Ireland may not be a greatly accurate finisher, but he can slot them home. His volleys are sometimes sublime and can shock even the City fans who know him so well. They do sometimes have a good bit of pace, but sometimes they can be a bit tame.

Free Kick Accuracy/Swerve
Ireland may not be known for his shooting from free kicks but he does have a very decent cross from them. He gets a good bit of swerve off of his crosses as well as his free kicks. I believe this to be the reason as to why he's considered as one of Man City's free kick takers.

Heading/Jump
No, Ireland is not a great header of the ball. Sure he can head the ball out of the box in defence or deliver a header pass to a team-mate, but he's not much more capable than that. Although he does have quite a good bit of leap on him. Although, at times... I feel like I'm the only one who can notice it.

Technique
Ireland doesn't make many mistakes when controlling the ball. He's quite good at trapping the ball and has in general good technical skills.

Aggression
Plays almost like a new player with this attribute. He's been trawling it into the oppositions box every game this year. At times it seems he only knows that the ball can go forward.

Mentality/Team Work
Ireland is a natural leader on and off the pitch who seems to work well with his team, especially linking up with them. His outspokenness shows how much he really does care for the team, and his attitude is improving everyday. On most games, it seems as if he carries the team and never gives up a game.
