PES 13 Gameplay

Unlike some fans, I truly hate this year's ''unfair'' gameplay engine..Counter attack is an important part of modern football but I think this year Konami provided a game solely based on that part of modern tactics, in a totally unrealistic mode by the way, where the ball can travel accurately all pitch within one(!!) second to be perfectly delivered to some -for no obvious reason forgotten since he is the only one, no other team mates around him to bother four(!!) defenders- fast attacker..I have been playing PES 13 for a month now..Fourteen years now I always base my game plan on ball possession and build up attacks pretty much successfully..This year -like never before- I m bored of facing little cowards who sit back all game, sticking patiently to their defensive line waiting to tackle and deliver long through balls to Messi or Ronaldo simply because the chances of scoring like that are waaay waaaaaay better, in a sense that doesn't reflect at all real football..PES 12 also included such tactics but this year it really got totally unrealistic.. I don't really care about rating much (it is OK btw a between 500-550..) but about the fact that I m sick and tired already of this ''favor'' Konami did this year to defensive players in terms of gameplay..I know some people might answer ''ok mate..that's the game..deal with it if you can..'' but I think I m gonna give one more chance- after four years -to the more balanced -lets hope- FIFA 13..

Agreed, but wouldn't switch to Fifa yet. Was far from impressed with the demo.

One thing I will add though is that PES 2013 does actually seem a bit contradictory, because in some ways it is much more of a game requiring build up and possession, but at the same time it is also easy to exploit the through ball. So, it's almost as if more people resort to that because playing the game the way it really should be played is harder, but possession play is certainly there this year. It's like Konami tried to make it the kind of game a person like you or I would enjoy and do well at, but one little weakness ruins it. Exploiters will always do that, but hopefully one day Konami really get it right with a game that can only be played realistically. One which rewards skill and football sense, as opposed to a game that seems to reward people for being cheap and having so little understanding of what the beautiful game really is. Sad, really...

Totally agree, it's just been tarted up to say look at the great possession play option, better ways to tackle, pass, go past players etc & then they leave the ridiculously overplayed over balanced long through all option. It harder & harder to defend against & every single game I've now played in MLO (195 games ish) every goal conceded is a long through ball. The pass assist needs abolishing as it just makes the ball go anywhere but where you intend half the time.

So if you cant def it that means the game is bad? I do also concede goals, but it is almost never from through ball. I play possession and have rarely gotten any number of possession lower then 60%. I almost only concede from long shoots or headers.

Btw, can you tell me a single team in the world who does not use through balls?

Do you remember PES ten-twelve years ago? Through ball was there and I loved PES for that..BUT..you could deliver a 10, 20, or even 30 meters through ball AFTER you had done all the hard work leaving at least some of the defence behind..now your DM or even CD intercepts the ball and IMMEDIATELY delivers a through ball to Mphela or any 87+ speed striker who has magically managed to leave behind three defenders around him running towards crazy directions! Nowadays it is easier to deliver a 50mtrs through than a 20 mtrs through ball!!! So..I m not against through balls..I m against UNREALISTIC ''long 40m++ accurately delivered within one second'' through balls..can you recall many goals scored in champions league this way?

Right on. It's not through balls that are the problem, it's that a player can hoof it up with no skill and still be successful. I use through balls, but they come after passing the ball for a long period of time waiting for the right moment/opening, not kicking it up the field as soon as anyone on my team gets possession. That just shouldn't be SO effective. Balance is missing when that can be done over and over and over, and Konami say this year has "perfectly balanced gameplay." As if... But the real question is, why are so many people so lame that they play that way? If you're going to play like such a noob, why even play the game? The more online I play the more I lose faith in basic human goodness. Ha ha ha.

From what I can tell it's not so much pass assistance or defender AI which is the problem, it's shot/pass technique; the ability of Castolis, back to goal, to launch the ball with absolutely no back lift, first time, without even shaping himself or finding his balance. The same can be said for shots, only players like RVP or Di Natale should be able to do that, while for long balls, there should be a serious accuracy and pace penalty.

Bring back the shot technique stat.

Yeah, I was going to say that too. In general shot accuracy and pass accuracy are both way too high this year. At first I just thought it was shooting, but this discussion made me realize it's really the same problem for both. As a result using strikers with low shot accuracy can be really effective (e.g. Van Der Mirch, MPhela), but anyone who plays/watches soccer knows that a good finisher is rare. If real football somehow emulated PES 2013 then every team would just put their biggest fastest players up front regardless of technique, finishing ability, etc, and Usain Bolt would be a star at Man United!

I don't know if it's simply a matter of technique though, or that bringing back that one stat would solve the problem. Let me put it this way, they can solve it without the shot technique stat, and from what I have seen I also think that even when a player is well balanced, shooting accuracy is too high. Even the best players miss sometimes when they are well balanced, but in PES 2013 an average player seems to never miss when well positioned/balanced for a shot.

Dont rly know, I dont remember any player from my around 350 games, that did get past my def with a tactic like that. Maybe happened when I had super weak def.

I do always control my cb myself, dont press X. I put him in place where if the opp trys to use it I take the ball or make a manual offside trap (depends on the situation).

Maybe I am lucky with my opp that they dont like to use such a tactic.

Surely ball control affects pass and shoot technique? Only players over ball control 85 should be able to pull of extravagant passes from awkward angles. And long pass speed and accuracy ought to play a much greater role in these lofted through balls. I'm sure they can fix it in a patch - it's really killing the game.

I have learned to defend it as well, and rarely get scored on that way, but are you serious when you say you've never seen someone try this? Over half the games I play are against people who simply continue to try long through balls over and over and over again...

I have seen alot of people doing it and still doing it. What I meant was I have never seen people do it with their def players or just spam it all the time.

I agree it's nothing to do with not being able to defend, I mostly do defend them but it gets to a point when it's the same game over & over. The pass system with the assistance is ridiculous as you can volley the ball from player to player with no direction pressed & keep it longing about without effort, totally unrealistic. It needs a few more tweaks of the AI I feel, same with the shirt pulling/barging, that gets carried on too long before any free kicks given. The game could be awesome if they iron out the bugs & upgrade the severs.

As an oner of both FIFA and PES I have to say both are near identical with the way they work this year, this year in FIFA it is usually the guy with most possession who loses due to the lethal highballs, got PES first and thought wtf is this over powered high ball all about so got FIFA and it is exactly the same, you can sit back the full game, play 3 high balls and score 3 goals yet you can have possession the full game, get 20 shots and only score 2, I have been on both sides of the coin and seems I mostly beat players that are better at passing than me but the guys I'm head and shoulder above beat me, it really is messed up.

Concerning defending through balls i am pretty good, i have built up my defence at the back and they are quick, strong and do a good job.

The problem is finding somebody that plays a good game of football on mlo. Any player that has a large amount of Mlo points, does not play or try to play football.

The repetetive action performed by the high ranked player, of powering up the the pass button and lauching the ball upfront, either on the ground or over the top to try and find either rooney, aguero or van der mirch is extremely fustrating.

As i said my defending has improved grealty but after 10-20 attemps per game by the opposing player at smashing the ball up front trying to find one of his world class strikers, then they might just score against you.

I use fully manual passing and i have used it since the very first demo. i do not mind being beaten if the player im playing against also tries to play football, even though he might be using 4 bar assistance. If the level of gameplay is good then im happy.

i think the gameplay is brilliant and will never stop playing on manual, the feeling one gets from lauching a perfect cross field pass on manual is fantastic.
