I've been playing PES, or Winning Eleven, for the last 10 years, and never owned a Fifa game.
But PES 2011 was simply a joke.
The problem starts when they switched from the PS2 to the PS3. I don't know if the original programmers left the company, but the game changed completely, and for worse!!
Anyway, in PES2011 I find the following annoying/stupid/unrealistic and seriously until you change this PES is simply going to disappear at some point...
1) Sliding: The most annoying aspect of the game. 80% of balls recovered are done by sliding, which basically stops any attack, it doesn't matter which player is attacking!! Besides being incredibly cheap, its hardly a red card.
When you compare this crap with some "fouls" caused by just barely running next to a defender and recovering the ball, without pressing ANY button, its insulting.
2) Dribbling: Completely unrealistic. Dribbling skill is irrelevant as any crappy defender can get the ball easily. You have to do silly tricks to get past a defender, when in REAL football its all body movement, step-overs are useless when playing against the AI. The shoot-cancel mechanic in the PS2 was 10x more realistic than this.
To this I would add that top players don't know how to control a ball when receiving a slightly complicated pass, or trying to control the opposing team clearance. When you try to stop it the ball just bounces half of the time...
3) Receiving a pass: Automatically you slow down like for half a second, especially with a normal pass. Dont know if this is handball or football but the animation and pacing is just completely broken here.
4) Strange shots: Besides the incredibly unrealistic volleys some crappy players can pull off, its annoying when you are approaching the goal at an angle and shoot to the second post. Half of the time you wont even shoot on goal. When this happens to world-class players it just looks silly.
5) Players' speed: This is insulting for football fans, no way the cheapest defender in the game can outrun Messi when he is dribbling. I mean, players can STILL be fast when dribbling, but in this game defenders are 1.5x faster!!
6) Persistently off side when the opposing team stops your attack and you receive the ball again, if you try to send it to your attackers you have a 95% that ALL of them are offside, it feels soooo on purpose.
7) Stupid teammate AI: Its really common to be running next to your teammate against 1 defender, and he just keeps at the same line without making a run, or if possible, would just stop running so you can go 1 on 1. So nice.
8) Not switching to the correct player when making a pass!!!!!!!!!!
Ok this one is quite funny. Now that you have to aim and power your pass, does it make sense to have your players "on rails" following it? Also, if you miss it or it comes short, the AI will not switch it to the closes player, you will be stuck with the one the pass was intended to go to, making all this "aiming and powering the pass" mechanic completely useless and funny to see in action.
9) 2 players coop switching: I don't know why I receive a pass and suddenly the AI switches control to my friend, confusing everyone. Why?
I am really sad about PES and what it has come to be. I have loved it for over a decade, but since PS3 it just has been crap, compared to the PS2 versions. Now I can only try Fifa and hope it doesn't suck :S
