I've been playing PES from the time it was called ISS which means from around 1999. It's been my favorite football simulation since then, and I've tried many of them.
But after playing 10 season of BAL mode in PES 2009 and 5 in PES 2010 I've come to many conclusions that don't give me, as a fan, much to hope in the near future. Earlier PES games didn't have BAL mode so you would always play with a team but when playing with a single player all problems would arise to surface. Keep in mind that these observations were made only by playing BAL mode on Top player with 15 minutes of game length, as I think that's the optimum game length and best realism when it's hardest difficulty.
- goalkeepers are still crappy as they always were although they're probably little bit better than in the PES 2009, for instance, they still concede too many goals from impossible angles like from almost a corner line, they concede it through the legs or save the shoot which then bounces in the net
- sometimes when defenders pass the ball back to keeper, he just stands there and the ball goes through or by his legs and into the goal
- there is too many balls that shouldn't be fumbled by the keeper which end in corner, goal or defense clears it
- good thing is that keeper go out on the crosses, corners and some long balls that wasn't the case before, but still happens frequently that they just sit back at the goal line waiting for the attacker to get to the ball and score a goal even if they could get to the ball and back 4 times before attacker comes
- they still act, move and save very unrealistically, but I understand keepers are hard to program, still I think keepers AI is developing slow, sometimes even backwards
- they still concede too many goals on first post but it's much better than in PES 2009 which was hilarious
- they're too useless when saving headers, but that's probably a problem concerning attackers being too good when head shooting
- there was one PES where keepers would save 3 out of 4 one-on-ones, they still save too often but it's much better with every PES, still I think this is a little problem although it concerns also the attackers which perform better shots from 20 meters than one-on-ones
- keepers are criminal when dealing with long shoots but I guess this has to be like that or no long shoot goals would happen 'cos attackers are shooting the ball as it's filled with 10 pounds of rock
- when they collect the ball with their hands or they get the pass, sometimes they kick it, sometimes they pass it to the defender, but when it's a goal kick they ALWAYS kick it, never passes it, this is stupid
- they're always standing too close to the goal line although they should stay at least 10 meters away from the line when players and ball is around the middle of the pitch and then they would be able to cut long passes, same thing with corners
- defenders are the biggest problem of the game, especially central ones, they are only there to slide tackle or take the ball by running at the player, tackling (holding X on joystick) is mostly completely useless and it only leads to fouls or being dribbled, but it should be most common way of taking the ball away
- they're stupid when intercepting the ball, they just go at it no matter it's obvious that the attacker will get first to the ball and then just run past defender
- many times they don't even try to head or kick the ball away when defending from crosses, instead the ball just bounces of them and attacker scores a goal, even if that is player you're controlling and repeatedly pressing kick button, don't understand why is this happening
- sometimes they even try to lower the ball with their chests no matter the attacker is standing meter away and will steal the ball right away
- sometimes they don't want to pass to anyone, not even if they have 2-3 options but instead they keep the ball for themselves until attacker comes and takes the ball or makes him clear the ball out of play
- it's not logical that defenders are only backing away from 40 meters to around 15 meters in front of their own goal and just then try to tackle attackers, while the attacker come ahead 30 meters and than when it's panic defenders go berserk and attack away players when it's already big chance instead attacking them tactical at the 40 meters, stupid but maybe better solution that the one in PES 2009
- their reaction is so slow and no matter how their skills are, they're simply not good enough to be realistic like in real life
- wing backs (DL's and DR's) never tackle wingers, they just follow them and sometimes attempt sliding tackle but they usually follow them all the way and don't take the ball even when it's practically already in their possession or they're much closer to the ball, very stupid thing but the wingers are also bollocks so I guess it works this way
- defenders sometime move away from the attacker or just stand there, watch and do nothing as they concede a goal, this is sooooo often it makes me sick
- when there's a space between 2 central defenders and the attacker tries to run between them, they let him go and when it's already late they try to close attacker
- wingers are limited, they can only run by the line and if they don't cross the ball immediately they turn around and in 99% cases lose the ball from the defender, on the other hand, it's incredibly hard to take the ball away from them, harder than any other players, this is probably how it's meant to be although it's crappy solution
- central midfielders are there only to pass the ball quickly to the attackers and don't play big role when scoring a goal, and when defending, they usually run like hell but are incompetent and stupid to cut the pass and stop attack
- attackers are story for themselves so later about them
- now the ratings, they simply DON'T WORK, I played as DMC and FC, and when I scored 5 goals and made 4 assist in one game with all the other things I did when I played as the attacker I gained the rating of 8.0, whatever I did I never saw a rating over 8.0
- I don't understand the way ratings work, 'cos when I play so good with my DMC player and even score goals and make assists I get 6.5, and then later I play much worse, less passing, less interceptions, less dribbling with the ball, no assist, no goal I get 7.0 rating, this part of the games sucks big time
- the biggest proof ratings DON'T WORK is this, you can see ratings of the opponent's players before match and their ratings are in average around 6.2-6.7 and in best teams there are many players that are above 7, but players of your team (which you can only see when you get topic "You are starting this match" - which is also stupid) have much less rating and it's usually in average 5.3-5.7, only myself DMC and one attacker had over 6, me 6.6 him 6.4, no matter my team is in top 6 teams it still has incomparably the worst ratings, so what else to say about this shitty system
- I always hated that form system (you know, those arrows you can see when opening "Line up") which are completely random, players have one skill called Form which goes from 1-8 and if it's 1 his form will mostly be bad, and if it's 8 it will mostly be great, but this is random, you can't do nothing about it, it doesn't depend on your performance or your rating, and that's what I hate with this system
- Stamina & Fatigue system is also crap, there are some players that can't play more than 2 games in a row, now this can't be realistic, because of this system and the form system keepers are changing every two-three games, now where does that happen in real football, another serious problem of the game
- Two problems concerning only BAL mode, after 3 seasons I still get substituted every game although it happens usually after 85th minute, but every game I'm substituted no matter how I play (and no, I don't get tired, my stamina is high), this makes my angry, especially if the game goes in extra time and penalties, another thing, when I got called for nation I would come into game at around 60th-70th minute and if my nation was loosing I would get substituted after few minutes for an attacker, same thing was on PES 2009, what to say about this stupidness
- never in my 5 season did I see 0:0 result (only once in my game), but I'm not talking about my games, I'm talking about other games, when you see "Calendar" and for every fixture you see other games, there was never 0:0 result, but others very unrealistic results with high scoring games, which in Serie A isn't the case, at least not overall, why is this I don't know, this wasn't the case in PES 2009, too many goals
- do red cards and penalties exist in PES 2010????? I saw only one penalty and one red card (not 2 yellows, that's impossible) in my 5 seasons in BAL mode made by other players (not counting me). Defenders can do anything they want in penalty area, slide from behind with both legs and never even touch the ball but nothing will happen, they simply can't receive red card for any tackle inside 20 meters of their goal, it's very rare that they even get the yellow card, but they get it for much less when fouling at center of the field, the only way to get the red card is to tackle wingers, sometimes for brutal tackle you get yellow, and then for ordinary foul you get red (but as I told, very rare), anyway NOT WORKING
- if there is free kick inside 20 meters then in 90% cases you concede a goal, no matter who you're playing against, and in other hand, when I played with my FC who had everything set to 99 he couldn't even shoot above the wall, or if he could he would miss by a mile, even if the shoot is from 30 meters and even if I would press back arrow (and I've tried everything, and taken many-many free kicks, and I've scored goals with worse players) , shouldn't a player with better free kick skills actually be BETTER??????
- When there is injury time and for example it says 1 minute of extra time, it actually is more around 5 minutes, this has been like this forever, why can't they make this work, at least that's easy
- many teams can't take corners, for example my team is always taking corners on first post and nothing ever happens, I don't remember last time I scored a goal from corner, if my team ever scored at all
- long shoots, new and most irritating thing I ever encountered in PES games, some teams take 15 long shoots before half time and never even hit a target, even some good teams like Juventus, this is the saddest thing Konami ever invented in PES games
- through passes are still not at the level they should be, and they're hard to execute, even if you make through pass to your attacker that has 5-6 meter advance of the defender he still slows down and defender comes and takes the ball, only fast players can make the difference, this is major step back comparing to PES 2009, I don't like this at all, many one-on-ones are ruined because of through passes 'cos attacker always slows down with no apparent reason even if the pass was perfect
- also when the ball isn't in attackers possession but instead it's in front of him about meter or two on the ground or bouncing, attackers will never shoot normally instead they will perform slide shoot or diving header which is dozen times less effective than normal shoot or half-volley, this worked good in PES 2008, but not after that, why did they change this, who knows
- attackers are too good when shooting with head, that's also bad thing for few years, they're less effective one-on-ones or shooting from 7-10 meters away, very annoying
- too many passes are correct, I don't see any difference in passing accuracy of 50 or 99 when executing normal passes (pressing X on joystick), I only see difference when executing through passes
- counter-attack never existed in PES games, for example if there is 2 on 1 the player who has the ball will go on his own, even if there are 2 on keeper, the one with the ball will shoot and won't pass to co-player who has empty net, not even if that player is yours and you're calling for pass
- pressing tactics in PES certainly doesn't work, players are only pressing the one that has the ball but don't cover others, so then when he passes the ball they start running at that player and that's even worse thing than playing normal tactic
- attackers never perform back pass instead they just go ahead like idiots and try to dribble 4-5 players or they shoot from 30 meters
- sometimes you're alone and have great chance but they simply don't want to pass to you, and if you call for pass then they do but the pass is usually so bad and the ball never even reaches you
- Also the don't go into open spaces, or when you're running with the ball you are waiting for attacker to go ahead so you can try through pass for one-on-one, but instead he stops or even starts running back!??!?!?!?!? Same thing with wingers...
Well I really wrote many things and now I look like an idiot for taking so much time to write something, but in my defense I was frustrated after loosing few games and had to get rid of those frustrations. Anyway I would certainly like to hear your experiences and the things you don't like with PES. It's actually good game but it looks like it's developing too slowly, sometimes it's even worse than the year before and graphics means nothing to me.
