Here's the translation of French article on impressions of GameStars LIVE. Nothing we haven't already known but is a good summary what to expect.

If you follow the link, you'll find some screenshots as well.

Here we go.

Announced since nearly six months ago on Xbox, Pro Evolution Soccer 4 is awaited by all gamers like the Messiah. At the event of GameStars Live, which was held in London, we had pleasure to play PES 4 there. First impressions on the title headlight of Konami.

When the dream becomes reality...

The version presented on the stands of Microsoft and Konami was a projection complete only 70%, but already one can perceive the enormous potential of the title. As of the first minutes of play, the catch in hand is intuitive and one very quickly finds oneself to build complex actions in all simplicity.
On the level of the controlls, the player takes his reference marks quickly. Button A to make a short pass, button B for a long pass, button Y for an in-depth chipped pass, button X to shoot, left trigger to change player, right trigger for sprint, black button for special moves and white button for tacktics.
There was a small noticable issue, the handiness with the analog stick on Xbox was much more accurate compared to the Playstation version.
Animations of the players were improved since the preceding versions in order to propose a seizing realism. For example, in front of an in-depth high ball, the player will make a head pricked to put it in the feet and to continue his action. Briliant!

As with each of the series, some innovations and improvements make their appearance. This time the arbitration is with the honor, because referee is to be finally present on the ground, the man in black has more pronounced influence on the play. Thus certain rules profited from improvements such as the rule of the advantage. In the event of fault without interruption of the play, the referee leaves the advantage (an icon appears in top on the left of the screen to announce it), but if the action has suddenly stopped, the referee returns to the fault made. That does not have the air of nothing, but that reinforces the feeling of attending a true televised meeting.

Reality maximum

Another small change, but very significant for the fans of PES, the console does not keep any more in memory the last key pressed by the player. Previously, as soon as the ball arrived in the feet of the player, the machine carried out the memorized key and that was often translated with the screen by a shooting or a pass in the empty space. From now on, if you to press on a key before having the ball in the feet, the action will not be taken into account by the console unless pressing like insane on the button.

The AI of the players also profited from a total recasting. From now on your fellow-members place themselves much better on the ground and permanently seek to dissociate themselves. Result, the short pass or in-depth chipped pass are more often used. In the same way, the not controlled players take part more in the defensive phases and often make an effective steam pressing on the unfavourable attackers.

Wanting to make up for its lost time in terms of licencing vis-a-vis to its competitor FIFA of Electronic Arts, Konami signed the rights to use the names of clubs, players and shirts of the Italian teams, Dutch and Spanish. The Japanese firm must be being negotiating with the federations of the other countries at the moment as for now only provisional and laughing names are integrated: Island of France (PSG), Burgundy (Auxerre), Mouths of the Rhone (Marseilles),...

PES 4 will propose six play modes:
# Match: an exhibition match (1 or 2 players) or Penalties
# Master League: complete management of a team
# League: to play a championship among 7 different national leagues
# Cup: international tournament (32 teams)
# Training: Training with the various phases of play
# Xbox Live: to play an exhibition match or Penalties online

The option of Xbox Live is the large innovation but also left little uncertainty.

It's good to play together?

Since the advertisement of PES 4 on Xbox, the large unknown factor remains compatibility with Xbox Live. The version presented at GameStars Live proposes small Xbox Live icon where it is possible to play an exhibition match or Penalties. This functionality was not operational as when pressed it only showed sign in promt (as with all other LIVE compatabile games).
We badgered the person in charge for the Konami stand in order to know some more, but nothing filtered. It just declared us that Konami put it all in order to make PES 4 playable online and to have also the possibility of downloading contents(updates of the teams, and more), but without more precision. Even if for the moment, Konami did not react, it seems improbable to remove the option after having it presented to the very general public.
Konami would create a feeling of disappointment among the gamers and it is not in the interest of the Japanese giant.

A formidable craving

The opportunity to play Pro Evolution Soccer 4 on Xbox was offered to us and we benefitted from it at maximum (nearly 2 hours of play). Konami's title holds all its promises and answers our waitings. After having our hands on PES 4 and FIFA 2005, we can affirm, for the moment, that PES 4 has a body length in advance over its eternal rival.

This means it is almost impossible to play one-touch-passes
That is a big part of my current style :(

I don't think it's going to be like that. It just means that if you exidently press the button it won't work, like if you press 5 seconds before you want to pass the ball, but if you press it couple of seconds before it will work, or something like that. Personally I haven't expirienced any trouble with it.

That stuff about x-box live...didnt quite get it? is it saying, the online mode could be limited? Well, i'm still not convinced about the x-box version after what I saw at gamestars live. I dont think its a port, more a different game...but it could be an even earlier build than the pes4 for ps2 that was on display. I'm not gonna rush and buy an X-box just yet...gonna hang out a little longer, see what news develops about the x-box version.

It doesn't mean you can't play one-touch, I think it just means that you can only press a button when the ball is near-ish to your player - getting rid if the silly stuff from PES3 where you could complete a one-two before the 'one' has got half-way there!

Well thing about xbox live just says that it is not clear whether only the matches will be playable or there will be downloadable contents as well. However, the video from the Dutch site explains it all. Feel free to look at it at:

I don't know about you but my impressions about X-box version of PES4 are very positive. The core gameplay is exactly the same as WE8 which is REALLY important. Controlls are responsive and everything is up to my expectations.

The only thing is that game is 70% finished and that not all licences are done or transfers, and probably the game will go through more polishing before coming out. I actually had opportunity to see the game running on SONY WEGA (Xbox version not PS2) and it looks a lot sharper than presented PS2 version at GameStars...

I feel the same. I think we need to know a bit more about the X-Box version's online mode and if its any good (or bad like FIFA's last effort), and if the X-Box graphics are noticably better than the PS2.

It isn't you. It is the way LIVE games are represented. Links 2004 looks similar when you go on LIVE.

If you talk about the menu's in general, I can't say, because I did not look at FIFA 2004 ;)
