I've noticed a relatively common problem in 2009. When an offensive player is dribbling and then makes a less than 90 degree turn with the ball it's not uncommon for a defensive player common in actively trying to tackle (x on PS3) for the defender to somehow end up in between the offensive player and the ball. What results is the defender doesn't get the ball, doesn't stop the player, and is now standing completely still while the offensive player continues at full speed completely unimpeded.

It's not like the offensive player tried a move or trick, he just turned. I don't mind this happening occasionally, as I'm sure it happens in real life every now and then. But even if the defender doesn't get the ball he should collide with the offensive player and foul him or at least slow him down and throw him off track.

As I was thinking about this issue it occurred to me there's not enough player collision, of both large and small magnitude, in the game. There's not enough bumping and contact that occurs that really alters what an offensive player is doing. In 2009 a good striker can have a defender draped on his back and it might affect his accuracy, but there's still a good chance that striker will score assuming he's just got the keeper in front of him. The odds should be much lower, imo. If the defensive player is in good position relative to the offensive players body and is pushing him/knocking him around it should seriously slow down the offensive player/knock him down, not just slow him a little bit.

You also rarely see a defender push an offensive player and cause the ball to get loose for a 50-50 ball. It seems the defender wins the ball or doesn't. I'd like to see maybe a defender dispossess an offensive player but the two get tangled up and are battling with each other to see if they can win the ball. Not just a situation where the defender either doesn't win it or wins it cleanly.

I like that you call it 'wiffing'. But yeah, this is annoying. Proper collision detection will make a huge difference to the whole game.

Yeah, I didn't really know what to call it. Defender goes in and doesn't get anything so the closest I could think of was a wiff (or whif, however you want to spell it).

Is that not a term used in England?
