I just read the following on the EA forums. I understand that this doesn’t mean you must narrow down your friends list randomly, I understand that it's related to the Fifa 10 friends who are online and playing the game. I suppose that on your player hub where it shows what your friends are doing in Fifa 10 - this is conflicting with the PSN. This does make sense since I have noticed that we always have disconnections when there is more of us playing Fifa 10 at once, whether we are playing together or not.
Just how I understood it, you all can make your own judgements. I suppose if we delete each other from our friends list, this might work - well it's worth a try.

PS3 Game Disconnections
Dave gave me as candid an explanation of progress as he could at this stage, so what follows isn’t entirely locked down yet, so please bear that in mind. What we think we have identified is an issue with people’s friends lists on PlayStation Network. Essentially it’s down to the concept of ‘rich presence’ on PSN. That means that if you’re playing FIFA 10, all your friends who are also online will be informed of that. Now, if you have a lot of friends in your list, and lots of them are playing FIFA as well at the same time, there comes a point of ‘critical mass’ where everyone’s systems are trying to tell everyone else’s systems that they’re all doing the same thing. Phew. But that effectively sends the system a bit haywire.
Right now it’s not believed that this is a problem with FIFA 10 per se, and the guys are working closely with Sony to identify a solution.
The vast majority of people aren’t being troubled by this. We know that because we can see it. However, for those people that are, we have developed a workaround. It’s not ideal, but if you’re desperate to ensure you have the least amount of disconnections possible, the way to do it is to reduce the number of friends on your list as much as you can and try to make sure you’re not pinging loads of people every time you play the game.
It seems to be a bit of a problem that could affect any game with lots of friends playing at once on PSN at the moment. But David said he was very hopeful that once EA’s network engineers and Sony’s people get their heads around it, the problem should be addressed soon.
