Running onto the ball slowly

There are situations where I do a through ball to a player either behind or to the side of the passing player, for the player to run onto, yet the player sometimes runs SO slowly (literally jogging), and the opposition player who's well behind that player just bursts past him and collects the ball. This is not late in the game either, and the player has plenty of energy and is in at least good (sideways arrow) form. I'm holding R1 sprint and the direction where the player should run to, and it works most of the time.

What's up with that, just a bug? Anyone else get this?
