Scoring a freekick. How?

I'm getting really frustrated with freekicks from outside the box. The best I've done is hit the post of bar. I just can't seem to get it right. Sometimes they look perfect and heading for the top corner but then keeper turns into Superman and makes the save. This is what I do:

Press SQUARE, as it's loading to the power I want I press UP and then a direction button for spin/swerve.

Could I do it differently?

I just hold R2, get the power bar to half way and choose a downward direction with the D-pad. If I'm more than 27m or so from goal, I'll choose an upward direction. Also, try to use a left footed player when the free kick is right of centre, and a right footed player when left of centre. I don't score the majority, but I'm always damn close.

when im very near goal i hold down the down button for a slower free kick and it does the business a lot
