Righty, I have figured out how this legend thing works online now. After just one game! 
Which was fucking awesome BTW! We won 2-0, I setup both goals and we was down to 10 men!
Here goes... BTW, I'm explaining this for PC, not sure if console works differently.
Once you have your legend, and your ready to play online... DON'T press on legends in the main menu for your first go online. Instead, go back to Become a legend and you will have "legends" in the BAL menu, where you have everything else such as... Next match, save, options, etc... Now press on "Legends" then you should see "scout players". This is where improving your legend plays an important key! When you do a few seasons, your salary gets higher and higher. Now the salary points ain't for show as some of us thought.
You use the salary you earn in BAL offline, to bring AI players into your online legends team. You can select a maximum of 4 players, that's 1 goalkeeper, 1 defender, 1 midfielder and 1 striker. This is where your salary plays an important part. Say your salary is 1500pts, you can only get a striker who has also got a salary of up to 1500pts. Your salary ain't split between your 4 players so you can get 1 goalkeeper up to 1500pts, 1 defender up to 1500pts, 1 midfielder up to 1500pts and 1 striker up to 1500pts.
I know some of you are thinking WTF are you on about, and I'm sorry if this sounds a mess... But anyway...
You should now have 4 AI players... GK, DF, MID and ATT... Make sure you save as you would normally save your BAL and go online with your legend.
When ever you play legends online, you are one team and one team only. That's Legends FC, the host will pick the AI team and away you go... Now, depending on how many human players are playing, (will say 4 and we are hosting) the host will set the formation and pick the team. Now the host will have all the players at he's disposal... He will get the 4 human players, then he will get the 4 players he chose in BAL offline, remember that bit? Now, not only will he get those 4 players to choose from, but he will also get the 4 players from each human player so that's... 4 goalkeepers, 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and 4 strikers. Now, if one player hasn't chosen he's 4 players in BAL offline, they will be replace with the default players from the master league default team, the really shit players...
One more thing to add, if somehow all 4 human players manage to pick the same 4 players, your basically fucked. The rest of the team will be made up of default master league players
Anyway that's enough of me rambling on, and I hope it was clear enough to understand.
BTW, it seems legends online has a separate ranking system than playing online normal. Not sure if its ranked, but you do get stats towards your online profile and I can also confirm you don't get any points towards your legend as you do in BAL offline.
