So Many Opportunities Missed To Take The Pro Evolution Series To The Next Level

Bash-It!!!

Well all I'm going to say is be patient. A lot of us hate these 'mistakes' that Konami should have got rid off ages ago but we are being patient and waiting for this to work out. I think we should send these suggestions to Konami. Maybe they already know all these problems and are going to fix them for the future. While they are fixing those problems, we should be exclaiming the fact that PES is better than FIFA and leaving our criticisms to one side to deal with later. A lot of people are doing this, that's why not many people are criticising PES.

I can see where your coming from, im a pro evo, vet and have noticed the same bloody problems in the last few of the series, why dont they get andy (''take a bow son!'') gray to do the commentary with martin tyler, the best commentary team in my opinion, instead of beavis and butthead theyve got at the mo,
also i see what you mean about the speed in relation to other players, can anyone remember- season before last henry knocked the ball past jamie carragher down the wing and even though carra had a 6 or 7 metre headstart of sprinting ahead of henry, henry flew past him, the other day i had helguera keeping up with thierry, my ass that would happen in real life! this difference of speed in certain players just hasnt been implemeted as it should have been, with the exception of martins, who is ridiciously faster in the game than in real life.

The fact is i think they are spending more of their time making pes for the ps3 which in my opinion is the right thing to do! PES5 will keep me entertained right up until the release of the next version. So in all honesty it aint that bad! the thing you've mentioned are minor mistakes that if you hate, shouldnt really pay attention to too often! As someone said just be patient and when PES6 comes out im sure it'll be a whole new ball game! ;)

Well I'll make a confession, I didn't know that R1 dropped the ball, I was too busy frantically hammering away at the x button to throw it out while my goalkeeper just stood there, and, like it or not, this is a problem that still hasn't been fixed.

As for super cancel, I do know about that. It is useful for through balls when your player seemingly wants to walk alongside the ball rather than control it. However, it is impossible to do super cancel when you are not even in control of hte player running for the ball, and sometimes you simply cannot react quick enough to change to the player (if you play in manual as I do) and do super cancel aswell. This is an issue no matter how you look at it.

I understand that Konami cannot do all that they want to do on this system, but there are certainly things which they could have implemented that they haven't.

I've never been one to go with the flow on anything, or be brainwashed by the various media out there. I remember playing Fifa when it first came out way back in around `93 and the reviews it got were amazing. When I actually played hte game I was bitterly disappointed though. You could NOT pass. And when I say that, I mean you actually could not make more than one pass without losing possesion. You had to employ this technique where you hit the ball from your own penalty area to the opponent's, and then had a shot into the top corner, and vice versa. It made for a game that was rather more similar to tennis than footy.

But it had a big fat "94%" sticker on the box, and virtually every reviewer gave it high ratings, based solely on the fact that it was the first game to feature semi-realistic crowd noise. It really was a breakthough in that category, and is the reason Fifa has the commercial success it does today.

But the game itself was crap. Yet nobody seemed to notice.

Now I am not for one moment saying that pro evo is crap, or even a slightly bad game. Yet it seems that certain people are falling into the same category as those fifa fans out there when it comes to criticism of their favourite game.

It's as if pro evolution can do no wrong in the eyes of some people, and that is when the developers start getting a tiny bit lazy, no matter how much you'd like to admit it.

Pro evo is still a fantastic game, but could, and should be improved a hell of a lot more than it was, regardless of the system's lack of firepower.

I wonder when another game will hit the market that actually challenges the team at Konami to push the bar just that little bit further, because EA certainly aren't doing it.

I can't help giving the producers the benefit of the doubt here, because they've provided us with over 5 solid years of fantastic football, and also have to keep the PS3 in mind, but that still doesn't help me get away from the feeling of disappointment I had when I spent months anticipating this new game, only to be introduced to the exact same one as before, only with a few small changes, and even those ones were arguably not for the better.

I think you were expecting too much from Konami. And I'm not saying that with a smirk on my face.

Also, there is STILL no way to put in a slid tackle for a 50/50 ball sometimes, when you want to perform a slide tackle, but you have just been in possesion of the ball, you press 0 to lunge in, and your long pass meter starts building up.

How?

I am not in the same category as the masses out there who want the stadium to be filled to capacity, the players to resemble their real-life compatriots, or the game to look like you're watching TV. The changes I wanted to see being made were highly possible, and really, at least some of them should have been implemented.

Another example is the offside rule.

You cannot be offside from a deflection, yet I have been flagged offside on a number of occasions already because of this, and the crazy crazy thing where you are actually considered to have fouled, when it is YOU who has the ball, is just plain ridiculous, and leaves you scratching your head wondering what the hell happened.

Anyway, these are all niggles which I hope Konami irons out before number 6 is released. I guess all we can do now is wait and see.

I do want to add that there are also things I love about the game, and still regard it as by far the best football game on the market. It's just that these things are mainly things I have loved from day one.

I do think the addition of the way your players hold off and shield the ball, aswell as the way they hold a player to give you more time on the ball, or help you out in defence, is spot on.

Scous I use super cancel a lot when doing through balls as a lot of the time their just running waiting for the ball to go into their path but using super cancel can make you get to the ball before your opponent.
It is very easy to do as your usually always holding R1 to sprint so just a touch of R2 comes very easily and natural.

Hannibel,

I think you have misunderstood me. Super cancel IS useful when doing through balls, but it is not as useful when you are defending a corner for eexample, and your defender kicks the ball into the stands when he is under no threat.

Sometimes it is near impossible to stop your man from doing this, unfortunately.

And shoulder-to-shoulder tackles are still punished.

Someone should really point out to konami that this is infact legal, and should be allowed.

About commentary: I do agree PES is indeed lousy in that department, I hate it
The devs should check out ESPN NHL 2k5, now THAT'S commentary with pinpoint precision. It's play-by-play, replays, goals, stats, you name it. I always play PES with all commentary off, but when I tried this hockey game I was simply blown away, that's how good it is :) I fail to see how hard and time consuming it could be to get it right?? I bet even FIFA is better....

Devs - check out the competition and react in a proper way!

The thing is, as bad as the commentary is, I have always been happy to laugh at whatever dross Pete and Trev came out with. The thing that annoys me is that they don't seem to have even given them many new things to say and that's really lazy.

I agree. The movement of players off the ball into space when you are attacking is spectacular. I also like how you have to shield the ball to prevent the opposition getting it. It wasn't realistic that you could hit first time passes all the time on PES4 and have them go exactly where you wanted them and have players standing off you letting you do it as well. You can still zip passes about in this instalment, it just takes more consideration and skill to do so, rather than a series of thoughtless, ingrained in the memory button presses finding you in the penalty box ready to shoot every time. Hurrah for Konami, I say.

Surely it depends on whether it constitutes a barge whether it is penalised in real life? You can tackle with the shoulder, but not over aggressively.... that said, I will have to play the game again to decide if the refs in the game punish these tackles too harshly.

You can be offside from a deflection but only if the player was offside when the ball was played by the attacker. If he was onside when the pass was made but offside when it touched the defender on the way through he is onside. Sorry about the shit explanation.

Generaly Pro evo 5 is a great game, but i agree on the foul part. You now have a button called x that you realy cant use for pressure without commiting fouls, and that feeling of making a perfect steal and getting stopped by the ref, is just the worst.

Okay I think the game is pretty amazing so far! Give it time and this will all grow on us, just like all the others. (Pro Evo 4 was completely slagged don't forget). I got good, practiced and loved the game. You gotta drop all your expectations for each new title and let trust in Konami. My biggest beef at the moment is there change of R2 ball control to normal running. I always thought that this was a nice little button to keep seperate from conventional dribbling. (You could drag the ball and turn with extra control). They have now included this with just normal dribbling, if you manage to execute a direction in a certain manner, resulting in me trying do a simple turn and run but end up doing somekind of carnival sidestep routine with the ball, resulting in me getting tackled. I know with practice I will learn to adapt and will end up loving this series once more just as much as the last. Until then I'm gonna keep on pounding the wall and threatening to frizzbie my disc out of the bedroom window! Game on. (TIP. Referees appear to be heavy on the whistle this game - to do a clean tackle, press and hold X to approach your opponent automatically, when you get near release X and just muzzle your player in manually. Seems to be very effective and leads to a less stop start game. Of course a good hack and slash is fun everynow and again!

My favorite:

*Shot completely misses the goal and ball travels over the stadium* - commentary: "Oh, that's so close!"
