So Many Opportunities Missed To Take The Pro Evolution Series To The Next Level

Some of you really are warped in the head.

Is it not possible to criticise pro evo ? Is it the perfect game? Of course it bloody isn't, so stop being so childish and realise that people can make constructive criticism, and sometimes that is good.

I will guarantee you that in the future you will wonder why and how you argued with people who said the tackling needs adjusting, or that the game still has many faults, because then you'll realise that it did have.
Just understand one thing - Pro Evo 5 Is NOT perfect, and there ARE many things that needs retuning, or at least fine tuning.

I definitly agree with this and other posts I've read from you.
I'm also a veteran since ISS. Love the game and played every sequel.
About PES5, it takes time to get used to it and once you get the hang of it, it's great. BUT not perfect!
At first the tackling seemed totaly messed. I kept doing fauls all the time, but the deal is that you press :x: ONLY when you're in a point where you can take it clearly. Holding or pressing :x: while from behind or side will be called a faul. Just like sliding. You don hold it all the time, you just press it when you can take the ball clearly (in front or sometimes by side).
But, the refeere still isn't implementing the rule that if the ball is cleared before the contact, that it's not a faul. :(
Also don't like the fact that Henry, Owen and similar paced players don't have a noticable difference in speed against slow CBs.

One thing that I didn't see anybody posting about it is a player drawn to the ball. This doesn't happen while playing 1vs1 but you can feel it in 2vs2 or more.
The thing is that when your mate is going to receive a ball, if you're close to him (even 5-10 meters) you'll get drawn to the ball also. You can cancel it with R1+R2 but by the time you press it and force the player to run into opposite direction, you lose preciuos meters. It's very annoying especially when playing with lost of players.
This Sunday we had a night of 4 vs 4 :D
At first, we were like children playing football (all around the ball) but after some practice, the game improved totaly and it was a blast! The feelling of having so many opportunities to make different combinations, awsome!

I definitly love the game, just pointing what doesn't feel natural.

A few days before I bought PES5 i had a trip down memory lane and played all the previous ps2 versions. One thing which really struck me was how good the crowd sound fx in the origional version was. I had completely forgotten what it was like and i was really taken back by the fact that you could hear the Sheff Wed band when you were England and chants for "Argentina....Argentina"
Why on earth did they take this out of the series!? Surely there cant be any legal issues for using chants. I'm sure there's a reason for it but maybe they just forgot or something? They're all really weird at konami like. You just have to wonder what they're thinking at times.

Generaly Pro evo 5 is a great game, but i agree on the foul part. You now have a button called x that you realy cant use for pressure without commiting fouls, and that feeling of making a perfect steal and getting stopped by the ref, is just the worst.

I have managed to use A(or x on ps2 pad) to nick the ball off a defenders feet and run on and score with Reyes already..... I think people are overstating this to be honest.

I think scousevo (or whatever) is spot on. sometimes us evo fans need to think out of the box.

PES5 still hasnt won me over yet, still to difficult for me (and i'm good) and, most importantly NO FUN.

I also think scousevo has raised some good points. It seems to me that Konami is just filling in a gap before the next gen pro evo hits the scene.

marques raised a good point about players geting drawn towards the ball. It's slightly better in 5 than it was in 4, but still not good enough. I remember reading somewhere that the guys developing Pro Evo weren't happy with the player movement either, however they said that due to the lack of power of the current consoles it's the best they could do.

All i can say is that i hope they are going to rebuild the next pro evo from the ground up. With multi-core processors, the developers can spend more time working on player AI.

I understand how you feel ScousEvolution but you have to understand that they are trying to recreate something that is impossible to recreate. your statement about fouls given or not given is frustrating, but this happens in real life too, as you know, in real life, the game can change at any given moment, the ref may not see something, or see something that was not there, it all depends; how do you write a program that considers all that?

The speed issue I am not quite sure about, you could easily correct it there is no doubt about that, however having done that I feel that the game would lose the thing that we all love, it's competitveness, with this version you are forced to knock the ball around a bit more, with players that could simply fly past players you would see much more individual goals and less team made goals, for me this would spoil the game. So until the AI of defenders gets a lot better they should keep it as it is. As far as the goalkeepers, I have never been able to understand why having received the ball they do not act like any other outfield player, only with the ball in their hands, meaning you could throw to who you want to, when you want to. Again thinking about making the game competetive as possible, giving to much freedom to the keeper would see an increase in cheap goals as well.

The tackles, here I have no complaints, it is all about timing, do not rush in is all I can say about that, oh maybe not, the use of the square button whilst defending often acts like the x button, so the cpu often brings down the player instead of just jockeying, this for me needs to change, and would not bring about so many fouls, in my game at least!

About the crowd and atmosphere you are bang on, this is something they could sort easily and it would add so much to the game, and the competitiveness overall I think, either trying to silence the crowd or get them worked adds something to how you will play the game.

The online feature, for me, is class, I would like to see the introduction of the ability to setup cups etc. but that might happen in the future.

Overall I think the game has improved (I played PES4 for the first time two weeks ago and I must say that it was shocking (was playing WE9)), it is not complete yet but on the right track, as it has been said, expect no major changes on the PS2 versions, and try and remember that you do not get too many 10-9 games in soccer but there are a lot of 1-0's

Moan Moan Moan, the game is f* incredible. It's another pinnacle step to something of a Master Piece that Konami is working towards!! PLAY IT PROPERLY, IT'S SMOOTH. Yeah sure the game can be a c*, that's half the fun. POSTED EARLIER - FOR THOSE MOANING ABOUT X CAUSING TOO MANY FOULS, YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO USE X TO TACKLE....JUST GET IN THERE...!! Also drop the stars if it's hacking you all off, untill you get used to the play. I went straight into master league on six stars and am losing like a b*, but lovin it. Learnt so much already. (Went back and played 4 last night, what a difference) NEVER TURN BACK!!!!! :)

lol you'd fink it would be obvious with the crowd gone why pro was not taken to the next level. BECAUSE KONAMI HAVE REACHED THE MAXINUM THEY CAN DO ON THE PS2...

konami added a few new things on the pse5 and they had to sacrafise the crowd, if they done all the things everyone wanted then all that would be their is a pitch.. wait till next gen

What on earth are you talking about exactly?

If I don't like it I can go and play fifa?? get a grip child.

I am complaining about the fact that they have not made the forward steps with this game that they should have, that's all. It is still the best football game out there, but could have been better. It certainly isn't as near-perfect as some people are making out. There are lots of things that need improving, and have needed improving since it first came out.

I'm sorry If that's too much for you to handle.

Mate, it's a lost cause. Pro Evo fanboys are sad little children who stick their heads in the sand and claim everything is perfect, or almost perfect with the game. If they don't claim that, then they tell you to go off and play FIFA, or, my personal favourite(s), "go write your own game", "I'd like to see you make a better game", or, give 1 million and 1 excuses in an attempt to apologize for Konami.

Here's my biggest moan about the gameplay. No 360 degree player movement. The fanboys claim the PS2 can't handle it, yet football games on the freaking Playstation ONE have it.

I think Scouse makes some very good points.... but also none of us are entirely sure what the PS2 is capable of anymore?? - PES5 is still an excellent game, and sure yeah... they could have ironed out a few more little annoying things like player movement towards the ball on multiplayer etc. But how bout this as a shout for something to add to PES6...... a button or some way of actually diving in the game :)
It's a realism we have to accept in the modern game, and it goes on a hell of allot not only abroad but in our own premiership too! .... I remember the days of playing 'This is Football' .. what an absolute awwwwwwful football game i might add!! ... but was a great feature they had on that which was ur able to dive.... sometimes u get a freekick/penalty.... other times u get booked - but such a laugh when u win urself a pen in a really important game to win it for ya! hahaha.

Scouse person is right, as Is everyone that agrees with him.

My own personal view though is that PES5 is a bit shit and PES4 was a lot more fun. Get your tongue out of Konami's arse and criticise this cunt of a game for Christs sake!

At first I'd have agreed with Scouse...at least on some of the criticisms (still tihnk it's a great game!)

But now I've changed my mind. Admittedly, the sound is shocking, but the gameplay is mindblowing. It is possibly to turn sharply and keep control, especially with agile/skilful players, but it's a different method to before. It's so much more based around skill, and control..quick-thinking. Also, Cisse CAN punt it past a defender and chase, and beat him easily, but half the time the keeper's out like a flash (which is also realistic).

I think it's an unbelievably good game. It has its faults, and the quick free kick idea would be good, but at least now they've changed it so that at set-pieces, the players haven't changed position too much. You still have CBs coming back after a corner, or the midfield all over the place.

Right. Let me just clear one thing up before I go any further.

When I talked about the tackling issues, I was not referring to the fact that it is now harder to tackle, anything but infact. I actually think defending is far easier in this game, and the x button issue isn't even an issue at all for me personally.

What I mean is this: When you make a slide tackle and touch hte ball first, then that means it is a good/legal challenge. However, what happens in this game, and whast has happened in every game in the series, is that you can put in a perfectly good tackle, win the ball, and whilst your defender is still down on the ground, the attacker will touch his leg (after the tackle was completed) and the whistle is blown.

Also, tackles where the ball was won fairly are still punished. This is something which is simply in need of fixing.

I'm no computer game programmer, so I don't know whether it is because the PS2 can't handle it, but there should be a way for the computer to determine whether the player made contact with the ball or the player first. It's called collision detection I believe, and I think that more accurate collision detection would iron out this problem once and for all.

Also, I do not think this game is so difficult either, so this is not the reason for my criticisms of it. I booted it up, and put it straight into 5 star, drew my first 2 games 0-0 in 5 minute mode, won the third 1-0, and won the 4th 3-0 in a 10 minute game.

My criticisms are not of the difficulty, or the or the pressing system, but with the control.

You are right about the gap, but since I have been playing online, and obviously playing lots of other people, I can assure you that the better player will win more than most of the time, even with the reduced gap!
