StarCraft II [PC/Mac]

Probably the only one on here who played the original but anyway...

The worst kept secret over the last two weeks has been the announcement today during a conference in Korea that Blizzard Entertainment's next game will be StarCraft 2. Good news is that it is in the same vein as the original, a real-time strategy game with multiplayer capability via Battle.net - and thankfully not an MMORPG like World of WarCraft.

There is, as yet, no specified release date though my personal speculation would be late 2008/early 2009 as Blizzard are known for delaying their games by months and will probably announce an initial summer 2008 date.

Can't wait for this - and I just hope they haven't removed the hydralisks.

Shit yes, I can't wait. Awesome game. I just wish my router hadn't fucked up so I could still play it online.

Don't expect a release until mid-2009. Blizzard say that they expect the bulk of their balance testing to be done by the end of 2008.

Looking a more brilliant concept each time we see it though.

Any word on system requirements yet?

No but Blizzard do make every effort to ensure the system requirements for their games aren't ridiculous. Plus, they develop concurrently for Mac's. They haven't yet decided if you'll even get exclusive DirectX 10 effects.

Starcraft II will now be split into three games:

GameSpot said:
Blizzard's Rob Pardo reveals sci-fi RTS will now be three separate products; Terran campaign Wings of Liberty will arrive first.

ANAHEIM, California--For many, this morning's keynote address from Blizzard president Mike Morhaime was a bit anticlimactic. After revealing Starcraft II, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, and Diablo III at three consecutive events, Blizzard had nothing new to report on a new game from the company. That changed during the Starcraft II panel, as Blizzard's Rob Pardo revealed that rather than a single real-time strategy game, Starcraft II will now be released as a trilogy.

After bemoaning the fact that Starcraft II was shaping up to be an undertaking far larger than the previous game, Pardo said the first game in the series--subtitled Wings of Liberty--will focus on the Terrans. Specifically, it will seek to resolve the conflict between Jim Raynor and Kerrigan, which was the crux of the original Starcraft. The second game, Heart of the Swarm, will focus on the Zerg, while the final game, Legacy of the Void, will be devoted to the Protoss.

Pardo noted that each release will be a fully fledged campaign, featuring 26 to 30 missions apiece. The celebrity World of Warcraft designer also noted that while the ending of each game will be set, the middle of the game will play heavily to player choice, allowing for branching storylines. Pardo also said that the second two releases could be considered expansion packs, but that "we really want them to feel like stand-alone products."

Unfortunately, Pardo did not reveal when the first game in the trilogy will arrive. For more on Starcraft II--now the Starcraft Trilogy--check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Closed multiplayer beta starts in the next couple of weeks as previously planned and allows Blizzard to test out the new Battle.net service. I'd expect a release between July and October.

I've been watching some replays from the closed beta and I bloody love it. The replay feature is utterly superb - you can watch anything either side was doing on-the-fly, check their income, resources, production etc.

At this stage though, I have to say that the Zerg appear to have a huge advantage - I've seen the roach unit which is cheap to produce and can move while burrowed absolutely destroy someone in minutes because they didn't have any forms of detection in their base early on in a skirmish game.

Absolutely can't wait for this..

or the crack which will allow me to play against the AI using the beta client

Activision and Blizzard have formally announced the release date for the first game in the new StarCraft 2 trilogy, Wings of Liberty.

StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty will be released in stores on July 27th for PC and Mac. A digital release will be available exclusively from Blizzard's online store some point later on - the exact date for the digital release hasn't been narrowed down, it seems.

Wings of Liberty contains just the Terran singleplayer campaign, plus multiplayer for all races. Two more StarCraft 2 releases are planned that will contain the singleplayer campaigns for the other races, the Zerg and Protoss.

Blizzard has promised that the decision to divide StarCraft 2 is one that's natural for the series and that the developer is not 'milking' StarCraft 2 by cutting it up into three releases.

Blizzard also recently announced that StarCraft 2 will include a mod marketplace, but will lack LAN support.

"We've been looking forward to revisiting the StarCraft universe for many years, and we're excited that the time for that is almost here," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Thanks to our beta testers, we're making great progress on the final stages of development, and we'll be ready to welcome players all over the world to StarCraft II and the new Battle.net in just a few months."

You can read our own thoughts on the StarCraft 2 beta for more information on the game, then let us know your thoughts in the forums.

I played it, but wasn't really impressed. I was expecting more. The ship menu and the armory where nice features, but I've seen far better RTS games.

I enjoyed C&C4 (even 3) and Universe at War, a lot more. Also WH40K Dawn of War - Soulstorm was superior, IMO.

I've only played through Wings of Liberty once although am doing so again as training for the release of Heart of the Swarm. The original Starcraft plus Brood War expansion, however, I have played through at least three times.

Its similar to the Diablo situation - finished 3 and uninstalled it whereas I still have 2 installed on my machine having completed it at least four times and will return to it again in the future.

Diablo 2 is a classic. Haven't tried 3 yet.

Sadly, I feel that companies are aiming for console based or MM online games, more and more. That's where the money is.

I can't remember the last time I saw a proper RTS that wowed me. Considering the current PC capabilities, we should be getting a lot more than what's available these days.
