Why is it so hard in this game? I use the square button (ps3) for pressure and tap the x (twice according to the guidelines) but 70% of the time they just walk past me. Im good at slide tackling (circle button) but most of the time it keeps giving fouls and cards despite the fact its a clear tackle.
I normally play with barcelona i know they have a crap defence but still i bought quality defenders to help the defence out still not working!
any advice?

Hold X to apply pressure on the ball carrier. Hold [] when you want a player other than the player currently selected to apply pressure on the ball carrier. Use the Double-tap X cautiously as it is a full blooded tackle you cannot afford to get wrong. Also, the use of R1 with all types of tackles varies their degree. Keep practicing and watch some videos on youtube for this or previous versions of PES for tips on defending. All the best.

I'm with you. But my tackling proficiency seems to decline greatly after I score a goal and the CPU wants to go in unaltered. I can clearly see my leg touch the ball, the ball jitters, and the dribbler continues on

They seem to have taken out the ability to battle for the battle, opposition seems to be able to knock me off the ball more times than not and you cant use the right stick to hold players off, any idea why that was removed.

Good tackling needs extremely good timing, IMO its way too hard, maybe takes loads of practise but in general in PES 2015 tackling is not effective, double tap x has time delay usually will result in a yellow card, sliding tackle is so hard to apply and need excellent timing too.
Hold x is somehow useful but it will be useless if AI choose to be god like.

You need to score more goals to even poor defense, because once you
score a goal, AI will storm your goal and very likely will score. Maybe tactics will help you defend, I am not sure that will garentee you a win
especially on super star or top player level.

good luck

I've noticed that in most cases you need to antecipate the other player and tackle before he closes in.

In previous games it was on the same timing as a normal X to disarm, now you need to do it much sooner for slide tackles.

Tackling is just non existent. And trying to defend the edge of your own box, or trying to stop a player turn inside and slot it into the corner without you being too far away is just so hard it's ridiculous. And even if you do finally decide to step up to close that player down before he shoots he will just shoot through your legs or something, or you will just miss the tackle..etc etc.

Defending in this version, to put it bluntly, is absolute crap. Player cuts inside you on the attack? I expect him to score a lot of the time. It doesn't matter if I double on him or whatever, he always seems to find a way through.

I also have a serious problem with players cutting in from the edge of the box. It's very hard to get the ball off them when they are twisting and turning. It's because of that stupid automatic tackle when you hold A/X or R1/RT and A/X. If they made it manual you could actual time the tackle yourself. When players are twisting and turning like that, the automatic tackle is mistimed or not even made at all alot of the time.

Would people not prefer full control of tackling?

Defending and tackling is very, very frustrating this year. The players tend to over-commit and almost run past the attacking player and once the player is past you, forget it, they've gone, you either need to foul them or bring out your keeper, then the keeper gets chipped...every time, regardless of the skill level of the attacking player.

Generally speaking, my defensive record with Atletico isn't to bad, it's the 6th best in La Liga but I still agree, the tackling in PES '15 is shite.

I think I've got tackling down now, kinda. Especially when it comes to players coming in from the side of the box and almost having a fit with how many times they try and turn you, like they're all Messi on acid or something.

I had no hope with any of them at firs but then I decided to pull back a tiny bit, like maybe two arms length away, and hover using the jockey button. It's kinda bringing more success. Usually when they make an attempt to cut back and run by you, you can double tap for the standing tackle and cut them out, unless they attempt to ground pass it into the box which seems to be about 50/50 for whether you'll block it at that point.

The main problem then is trying to both block the route for the various attackers in the box and still have someone covering the player with the ball on the edge of the box. You'll never have the time to get together a decent tackling position when it's passed to someone in the box, and my I seem to have a huge issue with covering runs and movement in the box while also making sure the ball carrier doesn't scamper away from someone I was using teammate pressure with IF I was covering in the box. So even if you do get a feel for tackling, it can still be frustrating.

Also, don't attempt to push someone off the ball from the side if you don't have any advantage over them when running in, in terms of position or speed. Especially if the player who has the ball has similar or better strength. I've stopped running towards them when they're starting to scamper ahead of me as that just means I'll get trapped in the animation of battling them until I slow down or trip lightly, and then they're definitely away. A tiny bit of distance to keep up your speed and attempt to get into a better position before going in for the jostle battle has worked better for me too.

Playing on Super Star, by the way.

I agree with all your points and is almost exactly what I do all the time. I'm constantly using jockeying to get position on the players first before attempting a tackle. Except of course when I have to chase them down first, but I will do exactly what you do here to get position on them first before trying to get the ball, otherwise as you say, you get shouldered off the ball.

When at the edge of the box, I think I'm probably being too impatient in moving in and trying to get the ball, but I don't want to hestitate too long to allow them to pass into the box either. If they made that auto tackle manual, I'm sure it would solve alot of my problems anyway. Then I could consistently know when the tackle is going to be made as I control it, and if I get it wrong atleast I'll know what I did wrong and being able to tweak my defending next time.

With the AI controlling it, it can be hard to know what to tweak next time when it misses a tackle because its unpredictable when exactly it will always make the tackle. It may tackle in a situation then not in a very similar situation next time, so it becomes uncertain to know exactly what to do or try different to improve as the AI is unpredictable in similar situations whether it will make the auto tackle. The AI is just not consistent in how it will behave in similar situations. I hope that makes sense.

Does the game only auto-tackle when holding down A/X for the player you control to pressure the opposition? I rarely use that and haven't come across much issue with this auto-tackle thing you speak of, but then again I've only been playing for about a week or so. I only press X when I'm in the position where I'd expect him to tackle and it seems to do the job for me, while attempting to manually track everything myself.

It's a pretty nice tackling system overall I think, getting more time with the game even today. I haven't played a PES at all since probably 2008, and not really anything religiously with the series since 6, so switching from FIFA I find it nice to find the defending and tackling system as deep as it is. Though, I'd love to see a cover button for defending, where you track a player rather at a certain distance rather than going in for the auto-tackle. I'm guessing it's a system that would suit you too?

I think if an analog sprint method was introduced too so it wasn't always jog or full run, similar to FIFA, that would make a huge difference in people's opinion of tackling. Both in taking the ball from the opposition and also applying just enough pace when you have the ball so you aren't muscled off it.

Really, I think with a little time and getting used to, it's quite the fun system. Making a success of it too, restricted the other team to just 6 shots in a 30 minute Super Star match with Ajax against AZ

Yeah, when you press X/A or X/A and R1/RT together its an auto tackle when close enough to make a tackle. The former automatically closes down a player, which is useless as its so slow which makes it only any good when you actually want to make the tackle anyway. The latter chases down the opponent automatically for you, which causes the problem you talked about, when chasing down a player and moving in on them too quickly when you don't have position on them, and you get shrugged off. You've been using X/A only when you want to tackle, which would make it look manual, but its automatic. I actually only use X/A like that myself, and chase players down manually with just sprint to get proper position rather than holding X/A and R1/RT because the AI does it badly.

I've noticed if my positioning is a little off when I press X/A, it won't tackle sometimes even though I feel I could have made the tackle and won the ball. I probably need to improve my positioning aswell, but the fiddly AI auto tackle doesn't help. I wish they'd make it manual like Fifa's(called standing tackle I think in Fifa, you just press square/X). Thats one thing, of a very few, I love about that game.

X/A was used as the cover button last year. It contained a player at a distance when held, then when you want to make a tackle you held R1/RT also, and you'd automatically run in and make an auto tackle when close enough. It was a very good system, because the AI controlled your positioning better when containing and when you wanted to make the tackle. This seems to be my problem a bit this year, as its manual and my positioning can be a little off, so the AI decides it's not in the proper position to make the tackle. They ruined it in a patch last march when 14 became a "beta" for 15. I prefer all aspects of defending to be manual myself, but it was a good system.

I've played on it a bit more today and (after reading this thread) I do feel more in control when tackling and defending, it's all about timing and not panicking when a player is running towards you.

Before, I would be so concerned with the attacker getting past me I would frantically hit A, now, I just jocky, wait and tap A twice and win the ball back, probably 9/10 ,I also had the Pressure option selected in defensive instructions which made my players gallop towards the ball, now, with that turned off, they sit and wait, then pounce.

I'm now drawing games 0-0 or losing 1-0, just need to sort out MY finishing and I could have a decent little game on my hands this year.

R2 by default. You can change it in your personal data settings(in extras->options or pause game->select sides) and it shows you all the controls in there. I changed it to L2(LT for me), as its easier to pull off when alternating between it and sprint. That means close control and placed shot will also be change to L2 when attacking, which I find handier anyway.

Thank you very much, rat monkey. I hope jocky will help me defend better. But I dont think jocky will be that effective against teams like barca or R.madrid which script like crazy in high difficulty level, but still
will be helpful against other teams, Neymar twists and turns his ass like
there is no tomorrow, just cant take the ball of him, i hate that but its
funny to see that he is surrounded by 3 of my defenders but still he can
dribble on, unthinkable.

I just cant help playing this game, its fun, LOL

Yep, they sure are assholes on the highest difficulty levels, but I find you have more of a chance of defending them if you use jockeying.

Ok so if I have moved my controls to Type 2 jockey would be RT.

One thing I have noticed, the cpu players on defense all man mark much tighter than my cpu controlled players.

When I have the ball and pass it to another player the cpu defender is very close to me.

When the cpu has the ball and passes it to another cpu player my cpu controlled defender is standing much further away. I can select him of course but that means I always need to run him that 4-5 feet before he can start to close down the cpu man in possession.

Meanwhile the cpu is harassing me the instant I collect the ball from a pass.

Just tested it. I was wrong, with Type 2 controls Jockey is RB.

So a mix of RB and quick double tapping of A for a tackle and my on ball D is better.
