a couple of wins, a couple of draws. I found myself playing a 4.2.3.1 no matter what formation we were in simply out of habit. that 4-2-2-2, I like to call it the doughnut because of the big hole in the middle of the field, just doesn't look right. we never played it but sat idle with it on the screen a few times.

How fared the experiments?

Everyone's PS3 froze during a horrifying game when we tried 4-4-2 diamond with me doing quite well at CDM and play in the final third being amongst our worst ever.

We then switched mainly to 4-3-2-1 which seemed to go well enough but only four of us were online.

We were only about 10 minutes into the match:rolleyes:

No we were about 40 minutes in you nonce and I'd intercepted the ball repeatedly by that stage. Perhaps then, you were completely shit because you didn't have a clue how long we'd even been playing. The number of aimless long balls to Barn was absurd.

Sounds like a bit of a mixed bag and more testing is needed. I should be on this evening, think we should decide the exact formation to suit the personnel at the time but 2 up top seems a good idea in general.

That's the formation we quite often played with Team PesInsight on FIFA12. Quite liked it, because it gave the DMs the opportunity to receive the ball from the defenders, charge through into 'the doughnut' and feed the strikers in basically no time at all. The middle of the pitch feels a lot more congested when playing as a DM in a 4-2-3-1.

Doesn't stop you charging through does it?

For those that played, what are the thoughts regarding the formation last night? I thought we played quite well, with some excellent moves at time, I think we need to ensure Barn is part of the front two/three, no-one else really has the aerial presence meaning or crossing is little threat.

I can come back in tonight if need be, though I don't mind mixing it up and playing other positions to give others a chance in the forward role.

I thought the midfield of Barn, myself and Mak was working well until the last two games when Mak started turning around all the time. I enjoyed the move to CAM for the last one but that was probably Phats raging at my glaring error (played their guy onside by stepping up way too late from a clearance and it leading to a goal).

I still think with Barn up front we're better off going 4-2-2-2 or 4-3-2-1 if we're keeping away from 4-2-3-1 as there are still wide players. 4-4-2 diamond (4-1-2-1-2) isn't all that bad but there's a limit to crossing as it is so narrow and you'll spend energy just trying to morph it into one of those other formations.

How is everyone else finding 3-1-4-2?

I've been enjoying the central midfield role, particularly left, not sure why I get a little disorientated on the right side. I think it's been working well with Phatmann, Sweey and I in the middle, though Sweey if you want to go forward don't worry as one of us will drop. Sometimes you seemed to go and then hesitate, didn't want you to feel trapped too deep all the time. Joel and Barn seem to do better up front with someone close enough that they can play off one another and also aren't always faced up by two/three centre backs.

The only thing I noticed last night was human LM/RMs play a lot narrower than the CPU plays the positions. This meant we lacked width and subsequently got fewer crosses in the box, crowded the midfield and lack the out ball the wide men offer. It's hard for whoever plays there though because if the ball is going down the other side I imagine it feels like you're out of the game. Iron/Mak maybe you can offer thoughts here?

i liked it last night, two nights ago however I hated it because we got long balled for 3 games straight and the opposing CF was always behind our CPU 3 in the back.

I did get sucked up into a central position when I was at LM, mostly because I started wide and felt I was taking myself out of the game. Plus, Barn or the ST typically runs to the left corner while we attack and I pass there. So I wanted to bait that DM to me a bit and leave the corner more open.

However, I wasn't always narrow and still moved out from time to time. and still often ran out wide when our LB or CB gained possession

I think we're all doing quite well with it and as I mentioned to Barn recently, I think we've got two core units that work especially well together: you, me and Phats in midfield and Joel and Barn in tandem up-front.

The reason I hesitate to go forward sometimes is because that's not really what I should be doing much of. There are plenty of times where you in particular have dropped in as I've moved up the pitch but it shouldn't be a regular thing or I might as well swap roles with you - I've picked CDM for a reason and that's to help the back three so that's most of what I should be doing. I do like breaking on the counter though.

Although it doesn't matter, it is a shame FIFA's ratings system is (or seems) so biased towards attackers. I had one game yesterday where I kept blocking passes forcing the opposition (who seemed decent) into mistakes and ended up with a 6.2 or something crazy like that despite doing well. Still, that's not the most important thing.

Slightly fed up of the CPU dropping me in it by playing a short pass to me when I don't want it though. Last night was absurd; as I was under pressure but with my back to the opponent I quickly called for it from one CB to play it to another who was clear. All good until that CB decided to pass it back to me again even though it was blatantly obvious I didn't want it. Managed to get away with it, thankfully.

I don't think I was narrow throughout the night I had one game when I came in a lot more because I was going ages with no service. Spent a lot of the night tracking back as well covering the full back what might of made it look like I'm not staying wide waiting for a pass. I got more crosses in than usual I thought last night when I play on the wing. I certainly am enjoying having a break from DMF. Playing 11v 11 again recently I'm coming to the realisation of how bad my VP is.
