It's always worked really well for me. I always use two fast wingers and a fast midfielder just behind the front two.

4-5-1 worked great with groningen (won the league and Berg became top scorer 35 goals)

4-4-2 with espanyol (tamudo scored 52 goals in la liga - 38 matches Top player) It worked out great like this
