So, i've become increasingly frustrated at the lack of features implemented in PES 2011 since the next-gen games were released. In case you don't know, i'd call myself a semi-fifa fan as well, having had all their games since i can remember! but recently, I though i'd come back to pes- the game with which you can sit with your mates, have a beer, and have a load of fun! However, I have some gripes with the game which become really frustrating and thought I'd share them with you loyal pes fans : (in no particular order)

Firstly there is the offside rule. It just doesn't seem to be right, with players who aren't interfering with play being flagged offside by the linesman? Not only that, but when my striker really is offside, by the time the linesman/referee signals it i could have taken another 5 goals!

Second on my list is the player runs. I just dont understand half of the stuff going on with the players. I play as Spurs, yet not one player, not even the Flying Welshman, will bomb down the wing. This becomes increasingly frustrating when my tactics are set to all out attack, counter attack, and the strategy i play (in the pes starting line up screen?) is set for attack, attack, attack!

Next- what happened to the advantage rule? Being an ex-fifa 11 guy myself, i was frustrated by the amount of advantages the referee would give and would then book my players once the advantage was over (which is fair enough, but when it happens all the time it gets on my nerves). However, swtiching to a game where the advantage rule doesnt even feature, I realise how much i miss the rule! Its such a main feature of any real football game. It can win/lose you a match, and in the dying seconds of a game if you're brought down on the edge of the box unfairly you expect to have a free kick. Not here though. Just gotta get up and, in the words of The Spencer Davis Group "Keep on Running".

I also don't like the way that set-pieces look (from offsides, not from being fouled- no advantage rule :)) So the camera pans down to the ground so you can see the whole pitch. The problem i have with this is that the players all look so square and blocky. Now, i know that may be such a minor thing for some people but i'd like a game that's pretty close to the real thing.

Which brings me to my next point. The crowd. Made by a four year old cutting out pieces of cardboard. What annoys me is not that the crowd look awful (well yes it does annoy me), but the fact that they are ALL synchronised. The all do exactly the same thing at exactly the same time. Furthermore, the chants are just shockingly bad. Now that's not to say that I wish they had real chants- because we have that feature for our own use- but the frequency of any chant is pretty awful.

I hate the crossing on the game. Simple as that. I know we (PS3/Xbox users-not sure if the PC guys use control pads or what) have to push the left analog stick forward to cross to the back post or pull it towards us to cross to the near post, but the crossing accuracy itself is horrendous. Also, when playing in a ground cross, I'd say that 90% of the time the defender will cut it out and, when my striker does get the ball, just the simplest tap of O (the circle button. Yes i use the fifa controls on pes) will fire the ball out of the stadium!

Talking of player abilities, shooting can be a nightmare too. How many times are you in acres of space with a player known for his long shot ability? And of those people, how many of you find your shots flying further over the bar than Chris Waddle's penalty against Germany? On the rare occasion i score i'll be honest and say that i run around the room like a fricking nutter!

Lastly, I'd like to mention the goalkeepers. They seem to have become better as the pes series develops, but they're so bad its almost funny. Now, i know that every real goalkeeper is liable to make mistakes but not the kind of mistakes the pes keepers make. They always parry the ball, they don't seem to have any spacial awareness, and they come up for corners even if you're drawing! Anyone see the problem there!? (If not, i'l explain! Id rather get 1 point from a game than have the opposition break against me from the corner and be aiming at an empty goal!)

Anyway, that's all i can remember now, but i'll keep updating the list until it gets puts right! However, I'd appreciate it if you could take part in the poll above the thread to see what you find most annoying of the things i've listed (you can select multiple answers too :p)

How about "none of the above" as an option? This reminds me of the other day when a door-to-door preacher asked me "How do you feel about the fact that Jesus loves you?"

I said, "geez, that's kind of a loaded question, don't you think?"

So you can honestly say, hand on heart, that nothing is wrong with the game? Not even when the AI resort to cheating? Or are you just that bad that you never lead in a match? :)

I hate:
1) AI defensive pressure with what feels like 99 body balance, 99 top speed, and 99 acceleration
2) No sideways 1-2s. Everything is so linear in this game
3) No quick long balls. I just want to whip one across the field but can't do it with a long ball

That's me anyways

Being a pretty dedicated full-manual FIFA player for the past few years as well, there are some things that drive me nuts in PES.

- No true full manual. I with that we could set full manual in the controller settings rather than have to hold down a trigger. It wouldn't be a problem so much except that holding down the manual trigger when approaching a ball makes the player do the 'circling-run-up-to-the-ball' type animation all the time (hope that makes sense!).

- Poor manual player switching. In FIFA, setting player switching to full manual meant that you would always control the player with the ball but on defense could decide when to switch to the nearest defender. It seems a little backward in PES as you ALWAYS have to switch to the ball handler which can be a bit hectic when there's a goalmouth scramble.

- Can't change clubs in ML. Okay, I understand that this is a design decision but in CM I could change clubs if I liked the offer. And no, starting a new ML isn't the answer. In my ML, if I'm coaching Chelsea and I see that Messi got traded to Arsenal, I can't move there. If I start a separate Arsenal ML, there's no guarantee that the same trade will happen.

- Overpowered crosses. I don't know how many times I've seen a cross go from one end of the pitch to the other. I know it's ratings based since the really good crossers manage to drop it into the penalty area but I mean it would have been better to have bad crosses drop outside of the 18 rather than clear across the pitch.

- Penalties. I really like F11's implementation of PKs. Adds a bit of timing into the equation.

- Right stick knock-ons and first touch control. Using these effectively in FIFA could really open up the space for you. I guess the turbo button does the same thing but I guess I'm just used to FIFA's implementation.

- Trigger player runs. Opens the game up so much more without having to a) anticipate the run or b) pass to the player who then passes it back and starts his run.

- Driven long pass. Done correctly, it also opens up space. I haven't seen the equivalent in PES, only the regular long pass.

That's all that I can think of off the top of my head. Faults and all, I don't think there's any way I could go back to F11. I tried it post UT patch and it was a little better but PES still blows it away. And by PES, I mean the PC version with the PESEdit OF, spock2005's gameplay and kitserver speed set to 75%. Just brilliant.

I really don't want a trigger run button, can see why others do though.

Some things I find irritating...

- The fact I'm 22 and keep breaking the disk and then replacing it which basically equates to writing mug on my face.

- The illogical refs that seem to favour a team based on momentum.

- Constant gang rape pressure from the AI

- Obvious scripting both for and against

- Cursor switch that is designed in part to be a balancing act

I'm bored of moaning now, there's more I could mention however. Love the game just infuriating that it is held back by sloppy design choices.

The opposite, I guess. The AI doesn't ever seem to cheat IMO. How could I feel that way if they never offer me a challenge even on Top player with a less-than-stellar squad?

Point is, not everyone has the same opinion on this "cheating" thing. I'm not saying others aren't welcome to their opinion, but I'm being 100% honest when I say that I don't see things that way.

As for what the preacher said, he tried to talk his way out of it, but it was obious I was calling him on making assumptions about the facts. If Jesus loves me, that must mean he, and God "exist" but I don't believe that, so how can I even answer the question?

I know, I'm going to hell... :D

Sorry, you really shouldn't say that :( I don't mean to be sensitive but it's not a joke unless it's been disproven, which it hasn't... meaning you may in fact be going to hell :/ So I wish you wouldn't joke about it so lightly

Sorry for going off topic

Dont want to offend you and sorry for going off topic, but if like me you believe in the big bang and evolution hell is as real as narnia.

Sorry I can't help myself when it comes to stuff like this, I know I sound like a twat.

The size of the pitch is a bit of an issue to me if I'm honest. I think the defender catching up issue would be less of an issue if the pitch was a bit smaller/realistic. The defenders could be toned down a bit but with a smaller amount of ground to cover it'll seem less obvious

The one thing that really annoys me in my limited time playing the game so far is when I have the ball in the midfield and I have a teammate standing 15 feet away from me near the sideline with nothing but open space in front of him...and I press the through ball button and instead of sending a through ball east/west so my player can run after it it sends it north/south straight out of bounds past the touch line??????

WTF is that about????

If that simple design flaw wasn't present this game would be 100x better.

It is happening again
On thing that really bothers me is the way that players run on to through balls. They seem to take an extra few steps before coming in contact with the ball, which can make a huge difference.

Well today I was playing the Champs League Semi 2nd Leg against Chelsea. I had a 1-0 home advantage and in the last few minutes of the 2nd leg they scored. When extra time came about, I didn't touch the ball once in the 30mins so it went to penalties. I'm sure thats where AI cheating happens the most, because they know where our GK is going to dive so they shoot the other way. So i lost the game and my season unbeaten run!

Damn you konami

The most annoying by far is the difficulty levels. Once you set it to professional, you can no longer outpace even the slowest defender, and at Top Player every single defender in the game becomes Puyol on steroids.

It is a very cheap way to emulate tougher difficulty, and makes the player individuality obsolete. Since Regular is quite unchallenging, the game is more or less destroyed from the start.

A simple global change, mainly in response time, team work and attack/defense levels can easily "fix" Regular to become quite challenging though. Makes me wonder why Konami have missed that simple solution...

PS. Also makes me wonder why the community is more concerned with which player has what skill level compared to another player, than what skill levels makes the game run better. Have you have ever noticed how extremely fun the game is when you play a lesser team, and how predictable and boring it is when you play a good team?

Reduce all technical abilities (shooting, dribbling and passing related) by 10 for all players, and the game changes completely for the better. Give all players Speed Merchant card, and Early Cross card as well, and suddenly the AI starts to do sensible stuff, even your own teammates in BAL. (Leave Technique as it is, first touch is poor enough as it is in this game...)

Remove "Dribbling" and "Tactical Dribble" hidden attributes from all players to avoid that Messi and Ronaldo + + always dribble until they lose the ball.

Set Team Work and Response to minimum 75 for all and reduce Defense/Attack and Aggression by 10 for all.

Viola, a new and enjoyable PES2011 that is quite challenging at Normal, but without too much AI cheating.

PPS. I think that a -5 to all physical skills makes the game even better too.

the way to fix 'cheating'

the way to fix 90% of the complaints re: cheating is simple:

- STOP USING MASSIVELY IMPROVED STATS AS YOUR SCRIPTING MEANS. When the CPU wants to turn on the pressure, make the computer players perform smarter, better decisions, instead of just bumping their stats by 10-20% (or more it feels lol).

- Have some sort of 'style' setting so not all players behave the same, CBs are never going to cryuff turn around your forward when they're the last man in defense, don't magically turn every CPU player into a box of tricks whenever you want to win.

The stats thing is the one that bothers me the most, no more defenders with mid-70s speed/acc outpacing your 90+ forwards PLS!!! Honestly why can't the computer just make better decisions (spotting runs better/quicker, etc.), but using the same stats as before.

Lol, come on man. Losing on penaltys is totally your own fault, having in mind that this year there's a way to never miss a single penalty, and cpu shoots 70% times in the right down corner.

Some of you that complain about top player, should set up a match between 2 cpu's, and then watch to who you are losing to. AI is apsolutely hillarious.

One thing no one has mentioned is the terrible AI of your computer teammates when it comes to offsides. I'm getting really annoyed with my players drifting 10 feet offsides constantly. Oftentimes I've seen 4 of my players all standing offsides at the same time. Never seen that in a real game.
