For those of us that have played for a youth team or a local town team we are all aware of that roar upon employing the offside trap. Usually the ball is cleared from a corner and immediately your Centre-back is screaming like a savage repelling settlers from abroad - "Get ouutttttttttttt" - you know that you must run from the wrath of this warrior, lest the ball is knocked back and you are playing a lingering striker onside so that he may tap the ball past your lone keeper.
For those of you who are not too familiar with this setting, think of the offside as this: The ball is knocked forward and you, the striker for the opposing team are caught in that magical land between the defence and the goalkeeper - you are offside. Had you stepped up with the defence, you would be onside and thus no foul would have occurred.
Now where do offsides come in to play with PES? I asked myself that question this morning and since then I have yet to concede a goal! I employed the Team Strategy of Counter-Attack and offside - found in the Formation menu under Team and Change Game Plan. Simply set Offsides to L2 and X, and Counter-Attack to L2 and O. You should also set your Team Strategy to Back Line A and Offside Trap A - meaning that your defence is already set to the offside trap, but this is not good enough, how many times does your defence catch the opposition offside? Not enough in my opinion - they need a helping hand!
You can then play as if you are that mad savage giving the offside shout: Whenever you see fit, hit L2 and X and your defence will all step up hopefully catching the opposition offside! The reason for using X is simple, X is the "soft" tackle button, it means you can easily tackle and try the offside side without straining your fingers.
If that crafty winger does break your trap, I've noticed two things:
A. He tends to leg it down the wing and look for a pass, easy to intercept.
B. He runs for the goalie and either messes up or you've hit Triangle and your GK saves the day.
Additionally it seems that when employing the Offside Trap, your defence work in sync to tackle the opposing forward also, intercepting the ball at will.
There is one more option we can employ here - let the computer do it! Go back to Change Game Plan and have a look at the last option: Change Game Plan Control. You now have 3 sub-options: Manual, Semi-Auto and Full-Auto.
Manual is self-explanatory but these other options look interesting. Semi-Auto means that the computer takes care of your strategy apart from the first one (L2 and O), whilst Full-Auto means your computer takes care of everything! Not also that the computer has changed your Team Strategy to C.
There you have it - Give it a go, your leaky defence has plugged all the holes, all you have to do now is break your opponents offside trap!
