The Ultimate Classic Player Thread

Drunkard, I'm feeling England's pain all the way across the Atlantic, but let's keep this thread confined to classic players. On that note, I believe we have enough players here to make up a Classic Ireland squad, thanks mostly to Donalinho's spadework. Does someone want to post this? Also, we should have enough for Classic Spain as well, once we get Zubizarreta and a few others.

Hi everybody.
First, let me apologise for the delay in posting details of WE 10.
In my excitement, I didn't realise that "released in Japan on April 27th" does not necessarily mean "available in Korea on April 27th".
I have a day off work on Friday, so hopefully I'll manage to locate it, provided it's released here by then.
In the mean time, I agree with Beasley17 about creating links to created teams, as has been done with Classic Real and Benfica. There are quite a few that could be done at this stage: Classic Everton, Hungary, USSR etc.
I'd be happy to do this with Classic Ireland. The squad I 've been playing with is Classic Ireland, NOT Classic Republic of Ireland, so the panel is as follows:

Bonner, Jennings, Gregg;
Irwin, Staunton, Brennan, Dunne, Hughton, Cantwell,
McCarthy, Moran, McGrath, O'Leary, Lawrenson, Carey, Hurley;
Whelan, Townsend, Giles, Brady, Blanchflower,
Houghton, Heighway, Sheedy, Galvin;
Aldridge, Cascarino, Stapleton, Quinn, Givens, Best, Whiteside.

The reason I used players from Northern Ireland was NOT political, it's simply that:
(1) The inclusion of Jennings, Gregg, Blanchflower, Whiteside and Best gives the team a top-class goalkeeper, some strength in depth and a genuine superstar in George Best (every classic team needs at least one).
(2) Putting these players in Classic Ireland gives them a "home", that is, a team to play for.
(3) There is some historical precedent for this: a United Ireland team played a one-off match against Brazil in the 1970s, several of the players (Jackie Carey, Noel Cantwell) played for both the Republic and the North, and also it was George Best's lifelong wish to see a unified team.
(4) To create a Classic Republic of Ireland squad, simply replace Jennings with Shay Given, Blanchflower with Roy Keane, Best with Damian Duff and Whiteside with Robbie Keane.

Anyway, I've been playing quite a bit with them recently, and while they are certainly not the most talented of the classic teams, they have excellent strength in depth in defence, and a good midfield, so they are hard to beat. The main problem is a lack of real pace up front.
I have tweaked the stats of some of the players, details in another post.
If people might want to create this squad, I can post a message with links to the players (although I don't know how to rename the links... maybe somebody could tell me).

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making this such a fantastic thread, particularly Krookwk for his outstanding creations and uncannily accurate appearances, not to mention all the work in keeping the index up-to-date.

Thanks to Krookwk, this really is the Ultimate Classic Thread!

Donalinho, now's my turn to thank you for all your hard work -- I've got several of your creations in my game. I'm intrigued by your decision to put out a unified Ireland team. It's a reminder that we're operating in a realm where we can ignore geopolitical realities and concentrate on footballing skill -- if our real world were a better place, it might look like this.

It also got me thinking about other classic teams we could put together, ones that aren't defined by national boundaries. Scotty Africa is already working on players for Classic Africa and Classic Yugoslavia teams. We've also had offers to put together Classic Soviet Union teams, but those haven't materialized yet, though we've got quite a few players on this thread who could go into that squad. I'd like to see Classic South America (excluding Argentinian and Brazilian players) and Classic North America teams created for this thread.

Hi Beasley17,
I agree with you about "composite" classic teams. Yugoslavia is a great idea, bringing together plenty of great flair players, and I'm looking forward to putting together Classic Africa.
I work with a guy from Denver, and we were talking about creating a classic USA team. Names like Tony Meola, Tab Ramos, Cobi Jones, Alexi Lalas, Marcelo Balboa, John Harkes and Peter Vermes featured, but I'm sure you would know of many other contenders. Have you made any of these or others?

Hi Michaelh1990,
First, thanks for your John Giles and Kevin Sheedy creations, which I've used in Classic Ireland.
I like your idea about Classic Boca Juniors and River Plate, two great clubs that have had many great players over the years. The only question is: would they would be more than versions of Classic Argentina? What I mean is: the great thing about Classic Real Madrid, for example, is that you have in the same team diverse players like Gento, Ruggeri, Didi, Di Stefano, Breitner, Kopa, Hugo Sanchez and so on. I think it's interesting to see how they play together (and a good way to size-up the Master League transfer market).
By the way, I created World Cup Legends (the likes of Yashin, Francescoli, Valderama etc.) over PES United, and Premiership Legends (Schmeichel, Zola etc.) over WE United. What do you have on your option file?

Hey great suggestions guys.

Funnily enough I'm putting all the players from this thread into a classic teams option file. As you may appreciate there are alot of players to add so I'm gradually getting there, in between exams and my social life of course!

Anyway I'll post a list of teams I've started to put together when i have more time, but i can tell you I have input a Russia/Ukraine team and a Croatia/Serbia & Montenegro teams to combine the talents.

Anyway I'll post more info over the weekend and thanks for the support here. As always I thank everyone who contributes here. :)

Hi Krookwk,
If I make one post containing links to Classic Ireland players, how can I rename the links (if you know what I mean)?

Californa Clown, how dare you! Now run away back to spammers paradise. :laugh:

Donalinho obviously you need to copy the shortcut from the right hand corner of the post, where the number is. Then insert this after the url= bit. Cool? ;)

classic river is pretty much a number of guys from classic argentina + the legendary enzo francescoli..which is a great reason to make the team
I was rocking a master league classic river on we9jap, including enzo, ortega, di stefano, aimar, crespo, cruz, ayala, almeyda, solari, d'alessandro, passarella, sorín, fillol&pumpido, kempes, ruggeri, olarticochea, saviola, etc
problem is a number of those guys also played on boca too: bati, caniggia, ruggeri
so I solved that by very impartially associating certain players with my team

That's great Krookwk, thanks a lot.
I'll get busy making the index over the weekend.

Hi Guest501,
Do you know the names for all the PES shop players on WE9 Japan?
There are some I don't know.

Thanks again.
On the subject of classic teams to create, I have to mention my personal favourite: Classic Brazil 1982-94 (featuring 1930s legends)
It's basically the midfield from '82 combined with the defence and attack from '94. Great fun.

I think the 1994 squad and the players on Team USA now are pretty much the extent of our soccer history. The only other American players of note would be the ones from the 1950 World Cup squad. Possible candidates from that team would be goalkeeper Frank Borghi, center forward Joseph Gaetjens (who scored the winning goal in the upset victory over England), and halfback Walter Bahr -- reportedly Scotland's Tommy Muirhead saw him in action and declared him good enough to play in any first-division side in the U.K. Not having seen footage of any of these players, it's tough to assess whether they'd be good enough to crack a present-day squad. They're worth considering, though.

I got PES 4 statistics for a few of the USA 94 players (Lalas, Dooley, Wynalda, can't remember who else) off a German site and posted them on this thread. You should be able to find them with the "Search Thread" function, and they should be posted fairly close to each other. I'd like to see the creations you come up with for Meola, Harkes, Ramos, Earnie Stewart, etc.
