Through passes not working

Playing against the COM in six star (or as i like to refer to it, 'Foul Star') is way too frustrating. The COM is reckless and even if you are extremely good (like myself) at protecting the ball and moving it around , it always ends up catching and fouling you. Making runs down the wings and trying to dribble is mission impossible. You just cannot do it with average players when you are facing strong teams. I mean, even if you actually do dribble around and make the run, the son of a bitch will tackle you from behind. It ALWAYS catches up. Trying to dribble your way through the middle is also insanity.

Six star difficullty is ridiculous. Not enjoyable in the least. Way too hectic. I like to call it Foul Star because if you dont let go of the ball you WILL be fouled. Even if you get around one player the other two will get you or make passing an impossibility.

The moral of the story is 'If you want to enjoy this game you have to play against other people'.

Which brings me to the through balls. They are complete and utter shite. Specially the high ones. They only work when you use them down the wings because if you try to make one down the middle it either goes directly to the keeper or the defenders get to it 8 out of 10 times.
In PES4 you could make pinpoint high through passes at the edge of the area and they would gracefully pass over the defender and into the path of your striker for a nice volley or whatever. In PES5 you can score a goal with one of these passes, thats how hard they are.

High through passes are worthless. Such a huge flaw. And dont tell me that i have to press R2 or whatever cause that just doesnt work and that lobbing technique works but why the hell should i do that when thats what the high through pass is for?

A sucessful high through ball is impossable they only ever work on the counter-attack, useless.

I agree with a lot that's been said so far but the fact (for me at least) is that I am still winning most games. Mid way through the 3rd season I'm sitting in 3rd place, 3 points off the lead and I'm not that flash as a player.
The through balls dont work nearly as well as previous games but they do occasionally get through.
If the game was easier you would have won everything by now and would be bored.
Accept the challenge and find a way to win. The same as all games.

About the second formation: I play with a 4-3-3 formation where I sometimes make te wingers run when I have the ball with my sidebacks. This works especially well agianst the CPU.

I have two SS'ers like this:

----------- Midfield -----------
----SS-----------------SS----
------------Striker------------

My second formation is:

----------- Midfield -----------
-----------------------------
------------Striker------------
----SS-----------------SS----

The SS players have an arrow up front. I use semi-auto so I only have to press L2(all 4 are on formation B).

I beatet Juventus 8-1 with Brazil like this on 6 stars, if only you concentrate...

I'm on like 5th season on ml on 6* and lose about 1 to 2 games a season (those games i usually dominate but lose somehow i don't bloody know), but i admit most of my goals are not by through balls.

On pes4, easy. You got a fast striker than it's piss easy.

Pes5, the through balls i do aren't from far out. I like one touch passing then a through ball at the end while the oppo defense are running round like headless chickens.

In my experience, better to build up then through ball while their defense in running around after the ball getting out of position etc

Yeh in PES4 the L1+/\ through balls were realistic as you could actually play good ones, but now no matter how good your players passing accuracy is itll still be over hit.!

maybe try L1 + O for through balls depending on where you are on the pitch because if your on the wing, usually you can play a ball right across the pitch and 1 of your strikers can run on to it.

Although I was playing my XBOX version and it doesnt seem as bad as PS2, like I played a few through balls and they seemed to work perfectly?

i prefer passing into space, and letting the incoming player run on to the throughball work some magic then whack it in the back of the old onion bag GOAL! robbie keanes a legend for me with this

yeah, this is way too frustrating.. even players like paul scholes who have above average shooting or those with good shooting stats often get their shots off target..doesnt matter if its inside or outside the box, maybe 1 in 5 shots go in?

but saying that, the high i get from scoring a goal is fantastic cause its so hard to score goals

Patience Patience....

Only in my second ML season 6*, but have been decently successful. Through balls on the ground do work, but you've really got to think like Gerrard, when your MF gets that ball you gotta look long fast, I don't know how many times I've released Keane with Davids. Keane doesn't always get in alone but he spreads the D and following players have a easier time getting open.

As far as airial though balls, they can be effective but not by using the though ball button (me on xbox Y), I use slight pressure on both my left and right triggers then (depending on how far I want the ball to go) B (or long pass), took me some time in the training ground to get it down but if you start to get the hang of it can be deadly, especially if you have a good player that can curl the ball well.

And I gotta say I absolutely love the scoring system in PES5, I find it's all about positioning, timing, and then a well placed shot. It's not always about pace.

The thing that most annoys me about through balls is this,

X = defender
O = attacker
O@ = attacking midfielder with ball
----X--O--X------O-------
-------------------------
--------------------X
---------O@------

typical situation, the COM's full back is out of position, my strikers peeling off, surely a simple through ball to the right of the RCB will send my free striker in, /\ and the direction is pressed, HOW MANY TIMES DOES IT TRY TO PASSS TO THE OTHER STRIKER!? a striker with 2 men on him, why does it try to pass to him, im even directing it towards the other 1! Just one of a number of frustrating things in PES5 i've found, i really want to love the game like PES4 but i'm finding it hard.

Well i agree with 90% of what's been said. I do feel as though PES4 was more enjoyable, but at the same time I enjoy the fact that PES5 is more of a challenge.

My game has always been a patient passing game, so I guess it hasn't been as affected as others. But I do feel that the extreme difficulty of pulling off an accurate through ball limits my play when I'm playing against the CPU. Most of my goals are usually the result of some kind of cross thes days. That said, it is a lot easier to score from distance now, so if I have space to shoot, I'll go for it with some spectacular results! :)

Perhaps the one with both defenders on him is nearer to you. Aim towards the other striker and keep the triangle pressed. That way the ball will go to the one furthest out. In any case, may he be nearer or further, it's 100% going to go to the man furthest down the wing you're aiming at if you keep the through pass button pressed, which is what you want.

Cheers, i didnt realise through balls could be effectively "charged up" to go further, i play a new 3-4-3 formation with 2 SS which has meant the goals are flying in, and thats either happened less or is less of an issue as i'm creating more chances, but either way thanksfor the pointer
