Trying to step my game up

Hey, first of all, I've been playing WE8I on 3 stars, but since I started playing WE9 (Jap), it seems harder and I've had to go down to 2 stars.

I'm trying to step my game up to 3 stars again, what are some good tips?
The main problem is I've been having trouble finishing.

I'm a pretty aggressive player, but most of my games on three stars have been 0-0 defensive battles. I usually use a variation of 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Like, sometime a 4-3-1-2 or 4-2-2-2. My formation is usually dictated by the players I have.

Right now I'm 9-1-1 in ML Division 2 (2 stars), but I'd like to be competitive on three stars. I've tried Man U, Barcelona, and Bayern on 3 stars against much worse teams, and the games were draws.

I'm a big fan of the early cross (L1 + O), but under use the Through Ball. What other techniques are good?

I tend to switch the ball down flanks , left to right is a good technique. Being patient is a very good tip. If you can't see an opening don't force it, play it back if you have too. The main step to elevating your pro game is use of the rader. If you see your player on the rader is right ontop of the last defender try the through ball then.

Look for a player who has lost his marker on the rader too.

Double circle cross's are very handy to cause alot of problems.

Finnishing wise, if your one on one, try and use little power as possible to keep the shot to the floor.

Try and shape up for shooting this goes for one on ones and long shots

(running and shooting on this angle has a lower chance of a goal)

If you don't have time to cut in then don't and take the shot. Im just saying Cutting in has a higher percent rate.

Another good is to throw the ball instead of kicking it when in the hands of the keeper. This gives you a chance to keep possesion and work the ball around.

A tip which i am still incorporating into my game is the excssive one - two stratergy. When passing with midfielders and strikers. with every pass make it a one two this way if your players are always moving and making space and basically you get to a point where your whole team is moving around like crazy which opens up alot of space.

Cool, I haven't heard of the shaping up before, I give that a try...
Also, I've probably used the 1-2 pass, maybe, 2 times in a game. I guess I can use some improvement there. As for radar, I never use it, perhaps that could improve my game quite a bit. For example, one of my mates swears by the airborne through pass, but he uses the radar. I can never get that pass to work, because it always gets cut out because I never use the radar and sometimes misjudge where the defenders are.

Thanks for the tips!

I also do not use radar on regular basis. Nowadays i try to look at it more frequently and is indeed an useful tool. I managed to make some good crosses and through passes with the help of the radar.

Need to try that shaaping up cos i am really weak on 1-on-1s.

I also second that patience is the key. I try not to rush play and it seems like you can get more chances playing this way.

Cool tips! Thanks

Just played a cup on 5*, and you are right about patience being key. I still didn't use radar, and won 3 out of 4 games in the cup. Oh, by the way, if you are playing on 3*, try 4 or 5* instead, much more realistic.

lol, i play 6star (unlocked it), and have done since ISS Pro 98 (or five star in that case, anyways, i basically play on hardest level where possible) started with default ML team, got to div.1 in 1 season, won div1 cup, then won WEFA a year after :D. I plyed (even from start), a 3-2-3-2, that is, 3 CB's, 2 WB's that push forward (almost like SMF's), 1 DMF, 2 OMF's, 2 CF's. My current lineup:

GK: Howard (got him on a free :))
CB: Libermann (default)
CB: Ruskin (default)
CB: Jaric (best default player - turns out into mid 80's skill level player)
RWB: Kaabi (A.K.A Dagaka - fastest bitch on the pitch)
LWB: Peaton (from Celtic, traded him for Fouque, plus earned $900 from teh deal, looking to replace with Robben)
DMF: Mbami (Pretty good, aiming to get Park Ji Sung tho)
OMF: Iniesta (on a free, fast runner)
OMF: Kallstrom (best shot/freekicker i've ever used)
CF: Nihat (speed demon)
CF: Ewerthon (speed demon)

so u can basically see that i play thru pass style (coz of pacey front men), but can also hold up play, and lay up Kallstrom for that piledriving game-breaker, or have WB's come in from deep and hit them home. Once i get 2 good CB's (i'm keeping Jaric), i'm switching to SMF's instead of WB's - i play brazilian football, score more than they do :).

> Radar is essential for 6*. You can break a game open by simply taking a glance, seeing ur front men right up on opp. defensive line, and hitting a chip-thru ball from deep in defence, for ur 90+ paced forwards to latch on to). I use these maybe 4-5 times a match, and i glance at radar frequently, to watch for players running forward for thru ball, offside trap, etc..

> One-two is also bad-ass, with skillful enough players, and someone fast to latch on to, u can cleave thru an opp. defence, even if it's AC Milan :). I even use these to play out of defence :)! another move I use really often.

> Here's one you might not have tried - run down the line, then cross along the ground (3x O, tho u'll have to watch radar to make sure ur striker is in good position to slam it in). Done correctly, I've scored 3-4 goals in one match with this play.

Mostly, I incorporate almost all the moves i know (step-over, 1-2, chip-thru, normal thru, marseille roulette, low cross, lay-up, etc) into my game, all over the pitch (where applicable).

It's just so obvious when you read a post, that someone knows what he's talking about.

I have a simple thing to add about the 1-2s;

Before you pass, turn 45 degrees and then press X and tap L1, if he is fast enough, defenders won't be able to mark as they would if you just dribbled forward and tapped L1 after x.

yes, and the guy u initially pass to, who will pass it on to the runner, press L1 to have him shield the ball - ver useful in tight situations.

Thanks dark_shadow89!

You are a much better player than I. You have incorportated techniques into your game that I have yet to incorportate.

Unfortunately, my WE9 game started freezing up on me, so I'm back to playing WE8I. It seems harder in some ways. I always used to play on 3 stars, but now I'm trying for 4, and it is challenging enough for me. Funny, I could easily play on 5 stars with WE9 and get the same results as 4 with WE8I.

List of things I'm working on: 1-2 Pass, Chip-Through, and Radar...

Hi, I'm new here, but I'm an experienced PES player. I agree with most of the tips already given, but I have a few more tricks to suggest.

When using one-two passes (especially in the final third of the pitch) is DON'T always make the second pass. That might sound crazy, but I find that the first person involved in the one-two runs on for the return ball, drawing a defender to him. This often leaves plenty of space for you to play a through ball to another player and create a scoring opportunity.

Like Dark Shadow said, the triple-tap O cross is lethal if you do it right. Even if you don't score, there's a decent chance that the keeper will either hit it into his own net or spill it out into the box for an easy tap-in or an own goal off of one of the defenders.

Finishing is also key. The chip is very effective if you can master it and PES5 is much more realistic as the ball doesn't float as high as it used to. Also the shot dummy (square then X) nearly always bamboozles the keeper if you time it right. You don't even need to shift the ball in either direction, just commit the keeper and finish.

These are some of my main problems:
1. Too many defenders in opponent's box.
2. Too hard to steal the ball from opponent's possession.
3. I use too many basic techniques and not enough advanced ones.

So far, everyone has helped me with #3, but I'm still having trouble with #1 and #2. I think if I at least get #1 taken care of, I'll be able to keep up with Real Madrid in ML (who have 45 goals in the 14th week!)

Currently, I'm playing WE8I (PES4), and I'm having trouble scoring with 4 stars, would 5 stars be any easier to score (more holes in the defense)? I like the added realism with 4 stars, but there just seems to be a constant wall of defenders like in 3 stars with WE9 (PES5).

Thanks for all the tips so far!

Currently working on: Ridding myself of my bad habits, like holding down R1 and X on defense.

@leg breaker - yes, another good point u brought up. The player running from teh 1-2 button press alone could open up the defence, and allow u to run thru, or pass to diff. player.

As to ur questions Perfect Form,:

1) Don't always get the ball in teh box. try lay-ups for long shots, or run up and down along the edge of the box, to scab a penalty. The L1 shield the ball is also useful in box.

2) to steal possession, press+hold square - it makes ur players run to opp. ball carrier, and tackle (note: u may give up a lot of fouls and/or leave ur defence a little open, or ur players may get tired quicker, but it's a very effective play when in the opp.'s half)

I want to add to this tip. When you hold :square: to press on opponent, if you get close enough to tackle them or reach a spot where you might intercept a pass between two opponents, hold :R2: with :square:. Your pressing player will hit the breaks ( become much more responsive) and be able to make successfull ball steals without fouls. Without a doubt, this is one technique the COM can't react to but any veteran player can.

I agree with the 1-2 move, especially with not initially passing back to the player whi releases the ball. I sometimes play the L1 and x and the player runs on. I then play to a different player and then back to the original passer of the ball. This can be very effective in the right situation.

Also when you pass to a player who is on the wing and gas his back to goal hold back and R1 and the player will let the ball run and do a quick turn. This can give you just an extra yard on a defender and create a bit of space.

I just finished my first season on 4* and I won about as many games as I lost, but tied most of my games. The CPU just gets very lucky (skillful?) goals, and then I can't get back into the game.

I can't seem to figure out how to set my defense up to protect against the CPU. I've tried to catch them offsides, but most of the time it doesn't work, because they are onsides when the ball is passed.

Right now I have 3 CBT's, a DMF, and a LWB all on defense. How should I set them up with the attack arrows and such?

Luay

Registered User
one arrow from the DMF pointing backward/downward to cover the Right Back area.

maybe an arrow from your left side CB upward/forward to cover the LWB position, if your WB dribbles forward during attacks.

if u have 3 CB's, a DMF and two WB's, you should be able to defend fine. One tactic to use is to jockey when the opp. is breaking, holding up play until ur midfield gets back, not press, as they'll dribble thru u. Tackle them hard and fast on teh edge of the box, as they'll shoot long and score. Also, if they break thru, foul/slide tackle them before they reach teh box - u'll give up a red card, but protect ur one goal lead ;).

Play a LWF and a RWF. Whenever possible play the ball down the line with L1 and /\. Try to hit the 'double O' cross. The ball usually dips into the box and leaves an easy volley or tap in.
