Any formation work against another, you just need to change pressure level, compactness and support range to suit the opponent and find more openings. That being said, 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 with at least one DMC is very easy to succeed with.

I use 4-2-3-1 against all formations except 4-2-3-1, then I use 4-3-3. Always Counter setting, but I do not always rush forward regardless.

Excuse me for kindness I'd send pictures of your pattern of play with the roles of the players in the field and the various parameters. So that I can try your schema. Thank you.

I'm not sure what you mean, but a good rule of thumb is that you move your players pretty close to the player you intend them to mark, even if you don't specifically assign man-marking.

So for that reason, I always put my strikers and SS (in 4-3-3) quite narrow, to make room for offensive runs by my side backs. It works because their side backs will also get pulled in narrow to mark my forwards.

If I play 4-2-3-1 I also set my right and left midfielders quite narrow, in line with the keepers box vertically, and I form a sort of diamond shape with my striker in front, wide midfielders on a line in the middle of their half, and the AMC on the edge of the midfield circle. Again, this free up room for my side backs to cross the ball, and it gives a lot of 1 on 1 situations or even free access on the back if the opponent isn't paying attention and pull back a midfielder to help. I also use only one DMC in this setup, the other guy which is more or less in line with the DMC is a regular midfielder, CMF. I like this guy to make offensive runs to create a "free man" situations around their box. My wide players will occupy the backs, my AMC and striker will occupy both their CD's or at least one of them in addition to an opponent DMC. If the latter happens, their second CD will have to move in to close down and create a hole, or alternatively one of the other players have to leave their marked player to close down, so either way you have an attacking option out of it. A hole to exploit, or a free man to pass to.

Hope this helps.

Additional notes;
If you set your formation narrow on the tactics board, but assign wide instructions your players will start out narrow and seek wide positions frequently. If you do the opposite, place them wide on the tactics board but tell them to play narrow, they will start out wide and cut inside during the attack.

If you set both to a middle ground, your team will vary and be more unpredictable. I only do this if all else fails.

Pressure above 15 will take a huge toll on stamina levels.

Compactness below 8 will overcrowd your box in defense, it can easily be as much a curse as a blessing.

Compactness above 12 can be dangerous unless you have three DC or two with the support of a very deep DMC.
