What's More Challenging: Top Player or Superstar?

I've been playing this game for the last week and am getting pretty good. So the other day, i switched from my usual top player difficulty to the superstar mode. And surprisingly, I find superstar a whole lot easier. Whereas I was winning 1-0 or 2-0 now I find myself winning 4-0 on superstar mode.

Does anyone else find this to be the case?

You're probably right. I personally think there are much less blatant AI cheating involved in the Superstar mode, but the AI feels smarter. But since I actually seem to be able to tackle them, and my players doesn't suddenly turn sluggish and retarded, I too find Superstar easier, but in a good way.

I haven't exactly done any research on the subject, though, so I may be entirely wrong. I'm just going with my un-analyzed experience on the matter.

After a bit, superstar IS SCRIPTED. At patch 1.03, you'll feel superstar is very scripted after a few matches and the AI can do anything and will know the result of a pass or a shot before you actually hit the ball

I don't really notice, because I try not to let the negative sides of the game affect me. I'm too busy enjoying the good parts now. :)

Re: Superstar Mode

I tried Superstar mode for the first time and, I'd have to say, it seemed easier that T.P. Granted, all the matches have been 0-0 or 1-All but, it felt easier, and more fun. I've got to try Superstar in Master League, however. Then, I believe, things will change (or at least my opinion of it).

Yes, you are exactly right. When I first tried superstar it felt easy, fun and balanced but then after a bit it felt very scripted and things DID change. When I found out superstar had a lot of scripting I suddenly realised why I was struggling against easy teams. I then switched to top player and that felt balanced like superstar when I first played it. However after 10 matches it went all scripte again. Now I'm at professional and thats how I prefer it

Yeah, I prefer the professional level, too (and so does my controller!). It's the level I've played at from most PES releases, although I've switched to T.P. (and now S.S.) occasionally. Maybe I've never experienced what you're talking about with the "10 games" because I've never played that many consecutive games under said difficulty.

Also, what you said made me think that to successfully play the game under T.P. or S.S. difficulties mean not that one is great at the game, but that one has got a handle on what to expect from it. Or is it this understanding of what to expect from the game that makes a "good" player? Is this correct?

If you try to tune* the game into your liking using exhibition matches, and finally gets it perfect, you're always in for a surprise once you start an ongoing game mode. Konami has coded so much extra mumbo jumbo into the AI in competition modes that you wouldn't believe it.

*by tune, I mean modding by any means. Tactical tweaks, global editing and even gameplay exe (ai) tweaks.

Shooting, for example, that seems quite good in 1.03, feels completely reverted back to vanilla "always hit the middle of goal" once you play BAL. The AI is much more frantic in ML or cup mode than Exhibition. So if you use one of the many tactical tweaks out there, the game will become great in exhibition mode and unplayable in cup/ML mode, for example.

The game speed also seem to vary greatly from game to game, and especially in BAL, where the game generally goes faster the better your player gets in addition to regular speed changes depending on the current opponent. Opposition players also becomes faster individually depending on your players Top Speed, but not as bad as the previous version where you could hardly ever outrun anyone.

Either way, the game is completely off in several areas, there are a lot of "cheap" ways to make the game harder, and PES and FIFA use them all, instead of making a decent AI instead. Sad but true.

PES even seem to lack a hard cap on game speed, so if your BAL player becomes truly awesome, by cheating or regular gaming, the game speed ruin the experience by resembling a footy game at 1.8x or even 2x speed.
If there even is one, they need to at least set a lower cap, that makes it believable imo, or else the game destroys itself, at least for me. I actually use BAL editors to avoid getting too good, continually halting my own progression to keep the game interesting, and at a relatively decent game speed. The speed should never be allowed to vary more than 10% from default game speed.

Funny, you say that as the good outweighs the bad

Well, you're almost right. But I only manage to play a few matches each day, or else I would burst an artery in frustration. I can only remain so calm for a short period when exposed to the level of outrageousness footy games of today has to offer... :)
