Use the 'Mark Player' setting in gameplan, that will solve the through ball issue quite a bit. As for defending, I honestly don't have a problem with it. My way of defending is using jockey or jockey and conservative tackle at the same time, and when the time is right release the jockey button and take the ball out of there posession. You also need to time your slide tackles right. Like most of this game, it's about the positioning and timing.

I strongly urge you to go to the training mode to get this right. This is how I learned and (almost) mastered the technique.

Same for me- I did the defending challenge and know i can defend any speed merchant by using r2 and square and x at the same time

you have to choose you specific defender in the game plan, hit square (ps3) and then you can choose man mark, then it allows you to choose the opposition player you want to mark

Go on to game plan, then highlight the player you want to man-mark, then press square or x(xbox), then go onto 'Mark'. From there it'll guide you to the opposition team where you can pick which player to mark. You can do this with any player but the goalkeeper. However, the man-marking this year is not as effective as it was in pes 2011.

Cheers

Also remember to view the opposition stats whilst you're in the man marking screen. What I tend to look for is how good there forwards, AMF's and wingers are. If one of there forwards is far better than the other, and better than your defenders in overall stats, it will be worth having two players mark that same player. DMF's are good for this option as you don't really want two defenders marking one forward (unless they only have 1 man up front), but your DMF is also a good choice for marking AMF's and forward thinking CMF's. Obviously your LB's & RB's will mark the opposing wingers.
