Hi Guys,
I have been playing PES6 on Xbox 360 for about 6 hours to test drive it for those of you that need to know or wish to discuss its characteristics. This is by no means an exhaustive review just some first impressions, feel free to add your own.
I have been on this forum for a few years but I dont normally write much as others tend to discuss my view before I get to post . However there has been mass criticisms of PES6 on Xbox 360 from many people on different forums and so I had to put some minds at ease.
Firstly those of us whom love PES, do so for its excellent gameplay, so speaking for people with viewpoint, the first thing we look for in a new release of this fantastic Soccer sim is "playability". ANd seabass may have been criticised on some of the earlier forums but I think the man loves soccer, he knows what he wants and he is working his way there. By that I feel he has set his mind as to the final version of this game in many years to come and he is seemingly working his way towards achieving this, and all the time listening to the critics and taking some suggestions on board. Having said that, KONAMI is a business and so he has to weigh up money against what he can make on a particular release. FOr those of you whom are familiar with programming you will agree that what he has created is not easy and it will take FIFA (in my own humble view) many many years to catch up.
Now to PES6. The very first thing I noticed was that the gameplay is so much smoother. The ball flight in passing and shooting is at a pace that allows a user to enjoy every move he/she makes. The game is definately slower than PES5 and much slower than PES4. Therefore the game flows more as you make movements from one end of teh pitch to the other, as a result it felt the pitch is larger than PES5, I think the scale of player to pitch in PES5 was not 100% but it is much more refined in PES6.
The passing is excellent, you have so much more control than PES5, you can pass to anyone that you wish to basically dependig on where they are. In PES5 this was lacking as many passes would go to unintended recipients.
The shooting and passing meter has been also slowed down a little to allow for more precise power selection, and by no means does this make the game seem easier.
The fouls issue of PES5 has been fixed. No more niggly fouls. In fact I foul on average 3-4 times in a game and the computer about the same. For a ten minutre game this is acceptable and more realistic, none of those stupid little penalties that you had no control over in PES5.
Free kicks and headers are about the same as PES5, though the goalkeeper seems to stop a few more than it use to in PES5. The keepers comes off his line to meet you one on one and the chip kick is not all that easy to get buy, so I think this adds a little to the difficulty. Although the overall difficulty seems about the same as PES5, there are no stars but 6 different levels and each noticeably different. In PES5 difference between 4 and 6 stars was not much in my personal view, in fact I would go as far as to say not noticeable in my experience.
The graphics are not what you might expect from next-gen. A little better than PS2 and probably because the higher resolution just smothes it out a bit (I take this back, read the added note at teh bottom as to why). The PC version no doubt with the many patches that groups release will be much better. The sound and commentary about the same.
The negative aspects of the 360 version is that you cant edit like you can in the PC and PS2 versions, you cant save replays which I hate. I kicked a couple of screamers and wanted to save them only to discover that I just had to memorise it for myself. Considering I wanted the replay footage to be extended by a further 10-15 seconds as many great advances from one end to the other was halved in PES5, its disappointing to find out that I cant even save those short replays.
Overall PES6 has many positive inclusions and changes in terms of playability but the lack of editing and saving of replays did hurt a little.
Here is a list of positives and negatives:
Positives:
1. Smoother gameplay
2. better passing control
3. The scale of the pitch to players to goals seems more realistic
4. No naggy fouls
5. Goal Keeping is seemingly a little better (but not as much as I hoped)
Negatives:
1. No editing Control
2. No saving of replays
3. The graphics and sound have not changed much over the PS2 - PES5
4. Still lack of many licenses
Hope that gives you guys some insight, I do rate it better in terms of gameplay compared to PES5, dont be to upset about the negatives, sooner or later seabass will have them fixed. It's worth the purchase, support them so they can continue to develop the game.
UPDATE: Regarding the graphics, I was using a VGA cable on my Chimei 22" monitor, then decided to see the difference on a Bravia Sony LCD. Man it is brilliant, my 22' was all washed out and none of teh major details were visible. The Bravia brought it to life, I have to say, PS2 does not compare in the amount of detail, the crowd filling the stands, the detail of the uniforms and the way the ball travels in the air. The different textured grass for times of day and different weather. I am happy to also say that dynamic weather does work in ML.
The keeper now also dives to his left and right with one hand saves which are awsome.
