Expert advice for online strategy needed

Hey everyone,
I am have been trying online (since most friends switched to fifa!) and have challange winning!

Although I won more than I lost in PES 2009, dribbling (or lack of it) has made it harder in 2010 specially when playing against Baraca,Real M and Inter.

In most games I have possesion 60-70& yet I only manage 2-3 shots while the other team gets 10-12 shots!

So obviously I control game but struggle in getting through defense. I usually conrol ball all the way to 18 then lose it.

Any ideas on how to effectively get through Defense specially against big teams with fast defenders.

Your help is appreciated.

No one really answers to strategy questions on here as i found out the hard way LOL, if you dont mind taking advise from a newbie i think i can help.

it depends how much you want to decend into 'cheating'. do what the other guys do..mirror them. if they are crossing and wing play cheesers .......and if you dont have fighting spirit honour like i suffer from sometimes..then control it and get it to your wingers run down the touch line and cross it in..use the R2 to guide players in the box

take long ranage efforts they work too, only if the other guy does it mind you

a more slick way of trying to get behind the opposition is in your strategy and the type of players you pick. make sure your strategy has players going AHEAD of the man with the ball......if you do like possesion games then or if you can do possesion games then think about spreading the pitch more ..attack with more width and then open up the defense and midfield in the middle ..that what you can play the ball through the defense...also try to work your through balls from the OUTSIDE of the defender marking your man INWARDS....that way your guy runs unto it and the ball travels away from the defender

then there is the almighty cheat..the early cross...pleas do not use this no matter what..unless the ONLY thing the other guy uses is that

try employing strikers that have reaction/ poacching/ scoring/ fox in the box thr type cards. they will help provide movemnt behind the defense

also your passers should have some pasing cards as this helps the ball not be intercepted and if the player has teamwork figures that are high this will encourage clever mocvement from the receivers

holding unto the ball is also good cause sometimes when you pass the ball around too much you olose sight of movement made from players that react to player in possesion and the situation of the ball. for instance if you give the ball to Xavi...no matter what, alot of time iniesta darts into space and then iniesta has TALLISMA cards which causes other players to move

over the top through balls from good passers also provides good measured passes to the forwards, and if you forward has high reactions or strong balance and weight they can get beyond the opposition. dont be afraid to try that over the top through ball....either from both wings or from the 20 yard to 25 yard range or even as far back from the CB

i am at work, if you feel that i have wasted your time i apoplogise but there alot more things to say but hopefully some others can fill in more now that i have posted all this..if not and you want more ways of scoring or creating chances then just say so dude,...would be happy to help

I have got to take exception to these comments.

Is the game of football not all about getting the ball into the box and hitting it towards goal? You speak about crossing the ball into the box as though it were like dribbling through the whole team with Messi on PES2009 and either scoring a lame goal there and then, or dribbling and passing in repetative circles inside the box until the certain opportunity arises.

I think it is a brilliant feature of the game that you now have just as much (if not more) chance of scoring stunning goals as you used to have by by simply dribbling the ball into the same old sweet-spots and tapping the shoot button.

I have to agree, since when did an early cross into the box become a crime? if youve spotted the forwards run then it takes a bit of skill, particularly if you do the cross along the ground.

I hear you ! I have 65 wins with 42 losses and 15 ties online. I would say about 80+% of the games I've played online have been against Barca and Real with the other few against Spain or Brazil. I would say that 99% of my losses are to Barca and Real as well mostly due to the fact that you mention, they have a major advantage with Messi and Ronaldo who are by far the best players in the game, especially Ronaldo. YOu could concentrate and play great defense and shut them down but all it takes is one slip and they're gone, in the open field and unstoppable. While you struggle to create chances with your tactics they keep trying to break through with a Ronaldo run... fun fun fun! I started man guarding him and playing more compressed defense and it seems to be working to some extent but still its frustrating and annoying to keep having to play these people every single game .... I suggest you find yourself some online friends who play with different teams, make a community and play them. If not you will keep having to deal with the Ronaldo and Messi cheesers......

Thanks everyone for the detailed responses, I certainly never touched the player cards (forgot about them) but will look into them more.

Silly question .. but what is the early cross?

Also when playing against Barca and Real Madrid, Inter (95% of the time) what have you found to be most effective formation? What do you set your silders at?

Thanks again for your tips.

this wasnt to offend anyone, i just feel that its a loop hole / glitch that hasnt been taken care off. i guess really is that there is not really many that vary thier styles..almost everyone i have played crosses the ball only..was EXTREME:Y refreshing to find others that passed and moved and collapsed the D with dummy runners etc. it just offered variance

the sharp turn on dribbling by messi has just been replaced IMO by defenders that sleep walk in transition...i dont often see defenders in real life constantly leave thier blind side exposed and often slow down thier movement in real life either......the midfielders tend to not cover ythe flank either and there is that sweet spot between the centre half and right in front of them that seems to be exposed
dont you find it VERY unbelievable that on a cross you have most of your players free and unmarked , i kind of do....but that just me personally. it would have been much better if crossing early didnt ALWAYs create danger you now..by all means cross deeeep to the other flank but why does crossing early have to almost always leave you bare in your penalty box leaving the man free and hitting its target LOL

please dont take offense to it, i dont mean to do that... i just feel that pro has yet again let us down in the way of having a means to score all the time if you stick a crosser on the pitch with a reaction finisher

ah yes the "early cross" LOL..i see which way you're gonna go mate

when you have the ball, get it to the flank.....but keep an extra eye on your radar..and you will see almost always that they is a supporter on the far side of the back four and then you will have your strikers in and around the back four...the early cross is just HOLD L1 and press CIRCLE once...and then the player will play the ball early beyond the near post and land either in the middle of the sticks or beyond.

because your defense are still retreating there is a BIIIIIG gap between them and the goalie. ALL thAt room is a threatening position for the ball to land into..what i dont like about the early cross which you will enjoy for the near future is that the forwards seem to react first almost always and seem to be able to overload the back post..and the support from midfield also seem to get thier asses on the edge of your box or into the penalty areas QUICK..as though everyone was lampard LOL.

think of it like this...beckham plays an early cross to gary lineker or to gerd muller...with added psychic ability to know that the cross is coming to that he is almost always quick to get off the mark and get there first....you can get that cross off before your man even comes in line with the penalty area..infact in some instances thats the best way to do it,

its fun in the beginning but from a personal aspect it gets boring.

one thing i dont know. does anyone know how to suvccessfully defend against the early cross?

Not much success but I haven't really run into it alot for me to get frustrated about it like the Ronaldo runners.... I get a lot more of those ... Honestly I was a great defender in the PS2 PES games, but on this one and in PES9 I find that Im very mediocre at defending, very frustrating ! Well maybe I'll get better because I loved defending in PES 5,6 for example, closing people down and controlling the game from the back, now on PES2010 its more of a chore!

LOL i know what you mean ..but i find that playing compressed and forcing him inside tends to slow him down some...only thing si that it exposes the wing for.......the cross. LOL..thsi is the bane of my gameing online LOL

i think i might have gotten a bit of help on this.....just now i played a fullback as a CB and made my whole defensive line play deeeeeeeeeeep....the back four seemed to stick around more than easily get destablised

thats true, they always use ronaldo or messi and run to the right wing and send the cross

here are a couple tips you SHOULDN'T DO.

dont keep the pressure button "square" pressed, this creates free spaces when your defenders go and mark the man with the ball

dont keep R1 press either

dont wait for the last min to make a pass, this game has button delay, you have to think two seconds ahead,

dont fall into desperation, if youre down 3 0 and stay calm you might make a consolation goal and end 3 1 instead of conceiving another 3

heres are some you SHOULD do

send your defenders up for set peices, e.g. materazzi, samuel.

go full attack at the last min in a corner, if its for the tie or the win, the midfielders will go up and the defenders you have chose will too.

play in semi-assisted, and manual on your attack balance

spread your team around the pitch and make 1 2 passes, they hard to perform in this game but once done theyre very effective.

man mark ronaldo, messi if you need to.

let your SB mark the man running thru the wing e.g. ronaldo and you come down with an AMF OR CF to cover empty space around the box or to mark the man running free, most likely ronaldo will pass the ball the this man but youll be there to take the ball away

and last but not least, if youre in a losing streak, quit the game, go do something else for 30 min or longer, then comeback. and try again

hope this helps.

"the early cross is just HOLD L1 and press CIRCLE once"
I have an xbox controller .. what is circle equal to? Through pass button?

What I find hardest is getting through 18. The combination of button delay and harder in 2010 (specially if you are not playing with Messi or Ronadlo) makes it diffuculy to go through defense on 18.

So what tactics are you using to get ball inside 18?

Thanks for sharing.

The biggest tip I could give is know the team you are playing with. What I mean to say is the same strategy I use for say Boca Juniors is completely different from the way I play Marseille. Bottom line is a good majority of these players who choose Barca and Madrid arent any good. be patient pass the ball ALOT for instance I like to look at the match results at the end. On average I pass the ball around 115 times in the game. I have played people that only strung together 30-40 passes! What are they doing? Running forward with Ronaldo and Messi ALL THE TIME. I'm sure we have all seen some moron take a 45 yard shot with Ronaldo seriously come on... My last game I played last night I won 4-1 over Barca with Boca Juniors. I use an ultra compact midfield and never relying on my strikers until just the right moment. When your playing as a "weaker" team you cant afford to make stupid mistakes.

Stick to one gameplan and perfect it. out of the two favorite teams Madrid in my opinion is easier to break down as their defense isnt the best. Lean to use counter attack options, defense and all out attack functions. In fact the best advice I can give for those two teams is in terms of formation. For Madrid I opt for a 4-2-3-1 utilizing two DFM's. Also make sure that you have players that need to be set in terms of attack balance defense always set that! There is no need to have a balanced AMF have him on all out attack! Hope that helps.

All the above are excellent points and I have already seem some improvments (getting more shots on goal) when playing online vs Braca and RM. I still lose by a goal but games are much closer.

The most challanging players I have met online however, nver played with Barca or RM. Those I do respect.

About player index cards, I am not sure how to use.
- Are they all activated or you chose when to activate? How?
- Anyone in particular I should pay attention to?
- Any source online the explains index cards in details?
Thanks for the help.
