I don't get what they do when you sign a player. I once landed on a gold ball and got a 75 rated player followed by a black one with an 80 rated player. What's the deal with the ball colours in the lottery when signing a player?

That's actually what I'm doing as we speak but so far it looks random (of course I know that it can be lol) Do I have to use the R1 button often with the sticks or it depends on the move? And how do I know what each player can do? Thanks
