Most of the time, you'll have more success simply paying more money, and NOT trading a player. The AI seems to prefer straight cash over a player and cash.

if u have 3 CB's, a DMF and two WB's, you should be able to defend fine. One tactic to use is to jockey when the opp. is breaking, holding up play until ur midfield gets back, not press, as they'll dribble thru u. Tackle them hard and fast on teh edge of the box, as they'll shoot long and score...

yes, and the guy u initially pass to, who will pass it on to the runner, press L1 to have him shield the ball - ver useful in tight situations.

robben's not THAT bad :). Messi is a beast, i'd also go for Kaabi (AKA Dagaka, can play on both wings), Ilnylov is OK too.
