Stardusted, have you tried using O for this purpose?

They correspond with special tactics that you select when you go into the "manual" (or something) screen in the formations' screen. You can use them to switch your strikers' sides, pull an offside trap, put on zone press, bunch of other stuff, including changing your entire formation.

Once you learn it, PES5 multiplayer is lightyears beyond PES4. Have some patience with it, though. The stuff you can throw together as plays can be pretty spectacular.
